Translucent light glowed bright around the green gem as she materialized in a familiar location. Variscite had visited this island before. She had been here with her squad from Homeworld before they were all shattered. Variscite was visiting in a sense of nostalgia. She had spent time here after escaping her torture years before. She shattered many corruptions at this place, but it held new meaning now because it symbolized her new life and her goal to become a Crystal Gem or do something else beneficial for this ruined planet. It still held value after all. Variscite was searching for something, a token of her past. She had buried it here, never one for sentimentalities. Though now that she had taken a turn she never thought possible for her, Variscite had to find it. It has to be somewhere....
Mask Island was not a place of violence and conflict. In fact it's shores were much more peaceful than those of beach city, even as far as corruptions went. In this time of year, the hibiscuses of the island started to bloom. It was a place of extreme beauty, and it seemed that some natural law tried to prevent war from coming there. Of course, that had not stopped the broken gems from coming their to brood in years past. Despite the organization inevitably falling apart due to the nature of it's members, the broken gems would occasionally visit the place. It was not some fluke that caused these two gems to inhabit the island simultaneously. Former broken gems were drawn here.
From up on a high ledge of stone he looked down. Perhaps Variscite already knew he was there. It did not matter, because he was about to make himself known. Crouching down on the ledge he eyed his old acquaintance with amusement. Sulfur ran a hand through his hair and then let it fall to his side. "Greetings Variscite, it has been two years! I can't imagine what would bring you here...perhaps you're looking for ME!?"
With a spring of his legs the gem hopped down to the sand next to Variscite. However as he usually would do, Sulfur hovered a bit before landing, causing the sand to swirl a bit. He folded his arms and tilted his head. "At any rate, I would like to know where your allegiances lie."
Variscite stared in blank horror as Sulfur made his appearance. The female gem had spent much time with Sulfur in the past. However, she only did this since she had nowhere else to go and she admired his power. Variscite had learned much from training with the Broken Gem leader, but was now considering joining the Crystal Gems, a group who's ideology seemed as far removed from the Broken Gems' as possible. Sulfur had seemed vicious maniac to her, rarely sensible, and always unpredictable. I wonder where he stands now...
"My Count..." Variscite began. "It has been a while."
Variscite gave a slight shutter at what she was about to say. Figuring a truthful answer could cause a fight, and a false one would only make things worse. The determined gem had improved her combat prowess, but could she defeat him alone... not likely.
"I was a running from Homeworld and hid on an island until they apparently lost interest. During that time I was able to reflect on my choices I made. I learned to appreciate humans, at least the ones that aren't irritable. I am also curious about this world, and if there is a purpose other than merely to survive. Being strong in't everything. I want to learn about the things around me, including the so-called Crystal Gems."
Sulfur's smile was the hardest thing to read. He could be amused, feigning interest, or be hiding rage. Sulfur never smiled out of joy, he only seemed to calm his anger when he was in a good mood. If there was a smile on his face, he might as well have been wearing a mask. He waited until she was finished to chuckle.
"I believe 'Sulfur' will suffice now, as we are disbanded. Of all of the Broken Gems you were the one I had the least experience with, but you seem to actually have an aim. It wouldn't surprise me that you are so eager to learn." He put his hands in his pockets, starting to pace around Variscite. He got very close to her when going behind her, and brought his lips near her ear to whisper. "So when do you plan on joining them, eh Variscite?"
"Probably when I find their base. I have to learn if they have more than good intentions. I have recently accepted that I had some unusual experiences with wicked Crystal Gems and figure most of them are well meaning, although I'm never certain. However I have questions about their strength and resolve. If they are too weak to protect what they desire to, they aren't worth joining."
Variscite thought fondly of Flurry, possibly the only Crystal Gem she knew. Flurry was nice. Maybe she would get the girl again.
"But I hope they are worth it. I could use my skills for a decent cause. I just need to discover where they hide."
The green gem pondered for a moment as those last few words trailed off.
He was behind her, but she could feel his smirk widening. The air seemed to be thick and cling to the skin, but it was not only from the humidity. A tension hung in the air, even the waves seemed to quiet down. They started to float about, Sulfur's blades. So many corruptions and gems had been shattered by them. They floated about eerily slow and orderly in their movements. All of a sudden, the blades shot forth, creating wind at the speed they flew. They hit their target right on the mark.
A coconut fell from one of the palm trees, landing in Sulfur's hand with a dull smacking noise. A blade abruptly stabbed into it, slicing the top half off allowing Sulfur to sip the water from inside. He looked at Variscite with a blank expression. "That sure sounds quaint. Care for a coconut?"
Variscite was concerned she had said something to set the dangerous gem off. Had it been her recent comment? perhaps he planed this from the start? Variscite twitched when the blade entered its coconut target. Ever amazed by the spectacle of Sulfur's antiques, she was relieved that she had done nothing to incur his wrath. This was just normal.
"A coconut would be nice." Variscite said with little emotion. The Crytal Gems were probably at least a bit extreme if not completely deranged, and would approve of her pretending to enjoy organic sustenance. They wanted to protect Earth so badly, and so they probably had a human fetish, or worshiped them in some way? Either way eating was probably honorable.
"Get one yourself then." Sulfur made a grin that could have been described as snarky, or playful. Sulfur had always shown feminine traits, but they seemed a lot stronger when he was in a good mood. This didn't mean much, as most gems resembled women more than men. Sulfur looked a lot more male than most gems, but his appearance was closer to androgynous than Howlite. One might even suggest that Sulfur looked female yet had a man's voice and the 'he' pronoun.
His smile vanished quickly. He was back to his thoughtful, expressionless gaze. Due to the bags under his eyes he had apparently been doing a lot over the past two years. Did gems get bags under their eyes? It seemed it took a lot. He sipped from the coconut again before putting his free hand in the pocket of his cargo shorts.
"I have often considered the Crystal Gems, they are weak, stupid, unrealistic, and I hate them." He sighed. "But I would be a coward to sit back and let homeworld get away with ruining my life. Count me in Variscite. I'm sure they'll try to shatter me on sight, but I suppose I'd love a skirmish if it came to that."
Variscite was shocked, more so than ever before at Sulfur's behavior and his new development. He considered joining the Crystal Gems. Did he really mean that? Unlikely. Regardless, she couldn't simply refuse and risk the consequences. Having the dangerous gem, who likely had caused the Crystal Gem's very much grief, with her would severely lower her chances at getting accepted. However, she, Howlite, and Sulfur all at once would be a force to be reckoned with. Perhaps the anti-Homeworld group would feel they had to hear them out in order to avoid a full scale battle. They would be forced to come to the table and Varisicte was guaranteed to be heard out. This might actually work...
"Very well then." Variscite purposefully did not tell him about Howlite. If they were not on good terms, it would be two against one and she would have a chance at beating Sulfur. She hoped that Howlite would side with her. "There is something I must find first."
Sulfur raised an eyebrow at this comment. He took a view steps closer, tossing the coconut aside, it landed with a splash in the water. He threw it too far.
"I wasn't perfectly serious when I asked if you were looking for me. After all, I've been gone for two years now. If you're looking for something here on the island perhaps I can help." He grinned. "Well, I can't help if you don't tell me what you're looking for. You've always been mysterious, what could a gem like you possibly expect to find on mask island?"
No, given the smile he made when he was motivated it seemed Sulfur still had his fiery passion for violence. Perhaps he had changed his mind about the crystal gems, but only for his rage. That was the one thing that was consistent about him, Sulfur was always angry.
Variscite thought back to her encounter with Chalcedony. The horrible gem had defeated her friends. A peridot, two rubies, and a jasper single handedly as they fought him. He shattered the peridot, and later shattered both rubies. Variscite was unable to crush him before he shattered her friends, this was her greatest sin. She freed the jasper, and left Chalcedony to die. Ever since she had been haunted by a figure in a white robe and reminded of her past. It was time to finally move on. Variscite had buried part of the coffee cup she had always drank from in some dark corner of the sea spire since she did not want any painful memories. Now she felt that her suffering still had to be a part of her. She would remember her friends.
"It's just an object of sentimentality. A broken part of a coffee cup is all I have from my past. The only good memories of my horrible first years in this world were created when I had that coffee cup..."
Sulfur stared blankly for a minute, digesting this information. Sulfur's origins were once happy, even if they were tainted by the lies of Emerald, a gem he thought shared romantic interest with him. Still, that was on homeworld, earth had never been a happy place to this gem. Perhaps it could have, had he looked more into the friend who found him despite his nature. In this moment however, he couldn't understand Variscite. As far as he was concerned, he had nothing left to prove that his life had once been happy. He nodded in acknowledgement.
"I see then. If you need it before we see the Crystal Gems, we'll get it." Sulfur nodded. "I wouldn't be digging up relics of my past. They bring back more painful memories than good ones."
Variscite considered this. She soon realized that she had only seen one side to Sulfur. As complicated as he seemed to be, his power and the threat he posed was falsely blinding, of course he had a personality too; one outside of just fighting. He may have also been someone else before he became unhinged. This idea of a level of "humanity" to Sulfur intrigued Variscite. She wondered what others who saw how she fought thought of her, if they perceived her as just a merciless, killing machine, in the same way she had mentally labeled Sulfur. Perhaps even the worst of gems should be given a chance.... Variscite quickly pushed the silly notion from her mind. Sulfur was too dangerous for the world.
Variscite nodded respectfully and in agreement, pleased by Sulfur's continuously tolerable behavior; his willingness to put up with a side trip like this since he acknowledged at least a little of how she felt. The female gem started off in the direction she thought the chipped fragment might be, descending further down into the spire.
Sulfur didn't speak much. He just crept around with her, silently enough that the sea was the only source of sound. Sulfur hadn't come to the sea spire often. It was definitely a peaceful place. The tower was so old, even gems he had asked didn't know it's purpose. Perhaps it was just meant to be a place of peace? Was it possible that a tower could be built for such a purpose? Sulfur thought it would make sense, but wasn't sure it was the case. As he followed loosely behind Variscite he saw several statues depicting the 'moon goddess'. He didn't know the significance to this, but he didn't have much more time to think about it.
An odd, slug-like monster fell from the ceiling, when it came in contact with sulfur's arm he reeled back in pain. It had disrupted his form causing it to ooze a little on his right forearm. "Crystal Shrimp!"
More of the things started to fall all around them. Dozens maybe. Sulfur grinned and started to levitate, intending to simply float over them, however another fell from the ceiling, disrupting his flight and causing him to tumble down, another having hit him in the back. He weakly got to his feet, feeling insulted. Perhaps he had taken them too lightly.
"Be careful! Crystal shrimp move in bursts, they might seem slow but they can be faster than either of us if they wish!"
Variscite was startled. To think something that seemed so weak and harmless wounded Sulfur. The cautious gem heeded his warning and slashed at a few near her with her grapples. Her movements were swift and she easily beat two dozen in seconds. That was the easy part...
They did indeed move in bursts. Several came quickly for Variscite, almost too fast for her eyes to follow. She was about to retreat, but the creatures stopped, causing her stay where she was; her muscles twitched. The veteran had survived many fights and hardly ever failed to give her opponents a proper evaluation. These strange things were an exception. The lurched for her again, and the surprised gem found herself covered in the creatures before she knew what happened. "AAaauuugh!" Variscite shrieked as her form shifted violently.
