Saki beamed when she landed the hit. She did it! Without any assistance she pinned Howlite! She felt him wiggle around under her and she tried to keep grip on him but he was as slippery as a seal. She was confused why he stopped and then yelped as she was bucked off. She drew her blades. 5 just like Sulfur. Although hers were positioned at angles to chop rather than piece or slash. "We can beat him father! Theres no way he can take down the both of us at once!" Her strategy was to hack and chop at his limbs whenever he would try to grab her. If he couldn't grab her, he was powerless. She couldn't exactly ask her father what the plan was. She would just have to improvise!
Sulfur didn't smile or cheer. Sure, Saki was doing well, and maybe somewhere in his black heart he was proud. He was on the defensive. Sulfur's side was doing well, and he obviously had the edge, fighting a gem equally matched to him with an ally as well. Still, he was on the defensive. When fighting enemies like Howlite or the Reaper, Sulfur really had to take advantage of his utility powers, he had little room for errors. Focused on the fight, Sulfur pulled 5 blades to hover around him and force back any grapple Howlite would try. His remaining 5 blades continued their work, darting at Howlite and if they hit their mark, pulling away quickly to jab again. The swords he used resembled an angry swarm of wasps in their style. He didn't use a pattern he just randomly jabbed, that would make it too hard to predict. With ten blades and two minds focused on him, it didn't seem like Sulfur should be on guard. Still, Sulfur didn't last this long underestimating enemies.
Variscite had taken time to reflect and scout out the Crystal Gem base. As she came back, the arriving gem had a look of horror plastered on her face. Sulfur and Howlite are fighting each other! Are they not on good terms? I do not remember everything...
The stealthy gem hid as she watched Saki. And who is this? She seems to resemble Sulfur some how. They are teamed up against Howlite. Did he strike first? Not likely. While Sulfur has shown me another side to him lately, he is still as insane as ever I would guess. ..... both my friends... what to do...
Variscite could not simply start attacking Sulfur after he had joined her. She would not attack Howlite, her friend either. The indecisive gem lept out of cover into full view of the fight.
Howlite found himself in a bit of a bind. If he attacked Sulfur, he would be attacked by Saki. If he attacked Saki, Sulfur would attack him. His eyes darted back and forth, trying to analyze the situation as best he could. He was thankful for the interruption of his friend. "Oh hey! Good to see ya! Uh, this is Saki, she's the brat that got me imprisoned. I came to teach her a lesson about the way the world works and Sulfur here wouldn't let me. And now here we are." He shook his head. "I will not make you choose a side. But if you choose Sulfur, I am going to treat you as I would any other opponent. Doing otherwise would be disrespectful to both of us."
Saki was appalled by Howlites description of events. "I had you arrested because you're a monster! How many gems did you slaughter Howlite? Hundreds? Thousands?! Do you even know how much destruction you caused? You act all nice and sweet when you're little buddies are around but deep down you are evil! It's a sickness! Tell me the number Howlite! Tell everyone here what you did! See how loyal your friend is after that." She was practically steaming with anger. She didnt consider herself an angry person usually, but to act like he was a victim? As if this was a betrayal or something? She wouldn't stand for it. "Variscite, that monster is not worthy of life and you know it!"
Sulfur suddenly relaxed, while still keeping an eye on Howlite. He first considered what Saki said. It was amusing first off, that Saki was mad at Howlite for slaughter, when both of them used to shatter corruptions just for the heck of it. He kept his swords up and ready, the fight seemed at a standstill so he didn't continue to attack. He made sure to be ready if Howlite decided to end their time out early. He simply hovered in the air and turned to give Varis a sheepish look, which displayed a lack of tension or care.
"Now Varis, I'm sure you'll believe me when I say this: the only thing that makes sense about me, is my lack of sense. The moment you try to go for me or Saki, I will target you first and by the time Howlite gets to either of us you will be dust. Capeesh?"
Variscite listened to Howlite and heard Saki's side to things. She had shattered gems before too, mostly corruptions, but quite a few gems and humans were in the long list of beings who's stories she had brought to a close. Howlite may have done terrible things, but it was because of the harshness of this world, and the green gem considered many of her actions she took in the past that she had recently come to regret. She heeded Sulfur's warning, but the explanation remained unsatisfactory.
"What's going on here Sulfur! Why are those to fighting? While you dismiss this as your senselessness, you would do good to enlighten me on your current relationship with Howlite and why you are protecting that other gem who resembles you from him. I am stronger than I was back then and am able to change the tide of this fight depending on your answer more easily than you would expect."
Howlite spoke in an uncharacteristically cold and serious tone.
"41,216. You asked for the number now you've got it. 180 are on the books because they were selected targets. The rest were the result of my bloodlust alone. I killed them all Saki. I inflicted more pain on my victims than any battlefield would. I did it and I loved doing it. Is that what you wanted to hear Saki? Do you feel better now? Feel righteous? I'll let you in on a little secret. You came from a group of monsters. We all were. Me, Dark, Varis, Blue, and even dear old Dad. We're all monsters deep down."
He took to his fighting stance, primed to go at Sulfur. Varis could handle the kid for a little while. This was a long time coming.
Saki's jaw dropped. She hadn't expected him to know the number, much less that it would be so high. Over 40,000 gems were shattered by his hands. It was horrid to even process the thought. It was now becoming apparent that Variscite was likely taking Howlite's side of this battle. She began to formulate her strategy. Howlite was shifting his attention to Sulfur. Which meant she had to deal with newcomer she'd never seen before. She squared herself to Variscite. "I dont know who you are or why you are defending him, but I am only going to ask once that you walk away from this fight. I dont want you to get hurt just because he poisoned you. Please. Stay away."
Sulfur realized then where Varis was at on this situation. He gestured to Saki with a blade. "You see the resemblance right? Saki is a Sulfur gem made artificially by an injector. Sulfurs were supposed to be yellow, which is why she's yellow and I'm green." He paused. "I should defend another Sulfur gem, blood is thicker than water after all."
However at Howlite's comment Sulfur paused.
"You counted?" Sulfur asked, surprised as he flew backwards avoiding Howlite's attacks. He had to skip around and kick off walls for a boost as his levitation wasn't fast enough. Occasionally he'd pierce Howlite with a sword or two, but Howlite's pain tolerance meant a poor hit could only slow him down. Sulfur's attempts to go for Howlite's weak points such as the joints or his gem failed, as the shots were too slow when Howlite tried to dodge. It was clear they were very well matched. Sulfur had to drop to roll as Howlite got close, and then leapt back into the air. "That's interesting, I gave up pretty early on."
Variscite listened to Sulfur and then watched as the former Count and her mentor fought. Howlite seemed to be acting out of revenge for what Saki had done. The contemplating gem doubted Saki was completely in the right for what she did, but never saw value in revenge. The female gem had considered vengeance before when her oppressors committed heinous acts against her. Typically this manifested in unnecessarily extreme brutality when fighting anyone who would dare stand in her way, however when they were no longer a threat, the rational gem saw no reason to go after them or "make them pay." Despite the new side of her mentor, Variscite did not wish to block his path to complete vengence, nor avenge him herself.
"Howlite... I understand you have been wronged, I personally don't see beneficial value in revenge, but I won't prevent you from achieving vengeance. This is your fight. I will not intervene."
Variscite stayed a safe distance away, yet still close enough to listen and observe. She watched as Sulfur and Howlite's battle intensified. Despite this, she realized how badly Howlite had been getting beaten when taking on both gems at once and she stood in between Saki and the two gems.
"Saki, was it? Even though you are the one being targeted and Howlite has done some things in the past, I cannot overlook what you did to him, he is my friend after all. This is his battle, and if you try to intervene..." Variscite gave a dark smirk. "Sulfur's efforts may be in vain."
At this point, Howlite had crossed the Rubicon. It did not matter how valid his thirst for vengeance was. While yes, perhaps he was a bit harsh, he was now locked in a life and death battle with the only gem he ever considered an equal. There was no way he was getting up and just walking away like this wasnt happening. It was a bizarre sensation. Almost cathartic in a sense. Their fighting styles were diametrically opposed to one another. It was Ali vs Frazier. It was ice vs fire. Skills honed to perfection vs a body that was built for fighting. Every pounce was countered with an evade. Every strike was either a near-miss or deflected by a blade. Every time he would come close to a grab, Sulfur would be just out of reach. And every time Sulfur would press forward, Howlite would either avoid the strike or just take the hit. It seemed that this fight would rage on for eternity. Since they were gems who didnt require food, water, sleep, or oxygen... it very well could.
Saki turned to Variscite as the fight ensued. She wanted to berate her. She wanted to prove that she was right beyond a shadow of a doubt. But then she looked to the fight. This deathmatch was clearly building up long before she came along, but she still couldn't help but feel responsible. She was the spark that set off the powder keg. And this gem clearly considered Howlite a friend. Sulfur had said Howlite had a way with people. Was it possible that in some twisted way, Howlite truly did care for others? She turned her attention back to Variscite.
"I'm starting to think this has gone too far. One of them is going to kill the other. You know this. We gotta break it up somehow. But..... how do we step onto something like that without being killed ourselves?"
Sulfur looked at Howlite and realized...this wasn't going to end any time soon. He smiled and dropped down, stopping his levitation. He even moved the 5 swords away from his body leaving himself wide open. He summoned his two hand swords and just ran at Howlite. Ten blades pointed at his enemy, and two in his hand ready to slice. Sulfur was fighting on as much offense as he could. In this sort of situation, Sulfur was likely to get hurt badly. On the other hand, there was no way Howlite would be able to stand after taking this.
"Let's get this over with, shall we?!" Sulfur snickered, frothing at the mouth a little, his eyes wide in a predatory smirk. He jumped into the air prepared to slice down on Howlite with all of his firepower. "As they say in western television, draw! Let's see who's the fastest gun in the west!"
Variscite was surprised that Saki had actually decided to take no action, not because she was intimidated, but because she had the wisdom that things had gone too far. Perhaps this smart gem who had read Variscite's own intentions was not so bad after all. The green gem accepted her words as genuine and turned her attention away from her possible attacker.
"This is their fight..." wind made its way down into the kindergarten and the gem's hair moved with the passing breeze, her back to Saki. "It would be wrong to stop it. That being said, we cannot let the winner shatter the loser. When this is mostly decided, let's quickly intervene."
As Variscite said this, she became concerned. Will we even be able to reach them in time...

This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
All gems on earth are still stranded, the communication hub is still offline and all the space warps are shattered, it has now been revealed that this is the work of Rose Quartz and her small group known as the Crystal gems. They have rebelled against Homeworld and have chosen to protect the Earth (Trapping themselves on Homeworld to keep the warps down).
Now both sides are fighting among themselves along with fighting against the 'Corruption' a virus is infecting many gems turning most of them into mindless monsters, but those with a stronger will seem to becoming something more sinister.
The Game has changed now. The question has finally been posed, are you against Homeworld or allied with them. Or do you have your own agenda that may or may not been assisted by the ‘Corruption’. Regardless the seeds have been placed down and although it is only the beginning the fight for or against Earth and the corruption has begun. The choice is yours for how it is shaped on the Original Steven Universe Roleplay Site.

*Garnet, Pearl and Rose are assumed capture on Homeworld
*Garnet,Pearl and Rose broke the space warps to delay Homeworld
*Thanks to Roses Message gems now know what the Kindergarten was used for
