Obsidian stood on the warp pad that had just placed him in from of the Crystal Temple door. When the light had dissipated, he began to look around. No one appeared to be outside of the temple at the moment. He looked at the temple door carefully and noted the star emblem on the door with the five gems, one at each point. No one was here at the moment, so he would wait. He made his way down the ramp to the beach and once again examined his surroundings. The full moon was a white disk in the sky that slightly illuminated the sand. He could make out the large statue that was carved into the cliffside that resembled an 8 armed giant woman. Was that a fusion? The temple had a welcoming air to it.
Obsidian turned toward the ocean now and gazed out at the large expanse of water. This planet was so much different from Homeworld. His sword appeared in it's scabbard and he drew it and held it up in front of his face. He then began to swing it as if fighting an invisible opponent. His feet followed his swings and his movements. His sword made a sound as they cut through the air, this sound was accompanied by the sound of the ocean waves softly washing up to the shore.
Meta glides silently out of the temple, though, had Obsidian been facing her, she'd have been more than visible. In the dim, silvery light of the moon, Meta literally glowed. It was not so noticible during daylight, when the sun outmatched her light and rendered the Gem's inner light invisible. And Meta was certainly capable of supressing it during dangerous times...... But here, now, outside of the temple..... Nothing was preventing her from being herself. In both the physical and personal sense.
"I was wondering when you'd show up."
Meta looked troubled for a moment, looking down and to the side, biting the inside of her mouth. It was a nervous habit; something she did when anxious, thinking, or discontent.
Obsidian's swinging had gotten faster, the sword was whistling as it passed through the air. His swings and movement had reached a fever pitch. It was almost like a dance the way he and his sword were moving now. Then he heard a familiar voice say a single word and he stopped and turned to face Meta, sliding his sword into it's scabbard at the same time. He had never seen a gem glow like that before, it was quite interesting and a bit entrancing.
"Indeed. I thought it would be a good use of my time while I waited for your arrival." He said, responding to her initial one word question. He began to walk up the slope that up to the temple toward her. His sword vanished in a flash of red as he did so. Her demeanor changed slightly. Was something troubling her?
"Yes, I was at the Hub, things are as you said they were." He said to her, now approaching her. He stopped about 5 feet away, a distance he thought the both of them were comfortable with.
Meta nodded. She considered whether or not it would be wise to tell him that she had been observing him and others at the time..... She stared out at the ocean, eyes tracking the waves as they washed in towards the beach with harsh murmurs, then crashed against the shore, throwing up waves of foam and mist.
Meta replies, eyes peeling away from the water to focus on Obsidian again.
"There was an unusual degree of activity at the communications hub that day, so I slipped in quietly to see what was going on; make sure no-one was starting fights or damaging the hub further. I stayed long enough to see you and a few others, then departed."
Obsidian listened to her explain why she was at the hub. Naturally, it made sense that she would have interest in the hub, she was a communications officer after all. What he didn't understand was why she had remained hidden. Was it because of the Homeworld gem that was there? She was likely a fugitive at this point, if Homeworld authorities had managed to pin the destruction of the ship on her. Obsidian initially was put off by that, but he had put that aside for now. He was living in the here and now on this planet and the actions of gems on this planet before arriving here didn't matter, their actions here were what did.
"Why didn't you reveal yourself?" Obsidian asked. He was genuinely curious about this.

Meta folds her arms and massages at her shoulders, fingers pressing against the edges of the arm-length gloves that stopped near her shoulders. It was curious; the Gem's full body-armor. You didn't see many Gems in full gear like that. Certainly not gear that was produced by their own Gem. Meta had paused when she thought of the above, but now she opened her mouth and replied.
"What I do is a bit delicate, Obsidian. A lot of Gems wouldn't like to know that another Gem spies on them constantly, wherever they go. They might understand that it's for the greater good on a rational level.... Or they might not. Either way, it's at best suspicious, and at worst an invasion of privacy and potentially perceived as a threat by some."
She shifted her feet in the sand, boots rasping against the ground.
"I don't want Gems thinking of me as a threat, or even as someone creepy. I'm here to keep an eye on the temple and any Gems nearby... I can't do that if they hate me. So I try to keep the places others see me restricted to the Temple... Or out fighting corrupted Gems. Make the best impression possible."

So, it seemed that she covertly kept tabs on many different gems on this planet. Considering what she had told him at the caldera, it was likely that she did it to maintain order. Of course, she was doing it the opposite way than Obsidian does.
"I am......not so subtle. The delicate approach is not usually how I handle things." Obsidian replied to her he was gradually feeling more comfortable talking to her. He looked up at the statue that towered above them, then back at Meta. "So, this is your home?" He asked her. He thought briefly about the only two places he had ever called home. One large empty chamber with 5 foot thick walls made out of a heat resistant allow with a very high melting point, with the only way in and out being essentially an airlock with reinforced doors on each end, and a magma lake.
Meta shrugged her shoulders at this, smiling. A small, nearly silent laugh slipped put of her throat.
"I guess you could sort of call it that. I've never had too much luck with homes. I move around a lot. Most people would tell you it's because my Gem is radioactive, and radiation never stops moving, blah blah blah...... But it's also been bad luck too. The attack on Camna, the nine-century war, the third great expansion and the drafting that followed......."
Anyone who knew anything about Homeworld history would know that the events Meta named started nearly a quarter of a million years ago; not exactly the dawn of their space-faring civilization, but.... Still. That made Meta old. Practically ancient, in fact.
"I've speant most of my life running from enemies, looking for a new home, zooming around on a ship, running from Homeworld...... And the last fifteen thousand or so have been speant here, on Earth. Also moving around. Just in smaller circles."
Obsidian knew about the events she was taking about, but only because he had been told about them. He hadn't been created yet when those events took place and he had missed out on other events after his creation while being trapped in a chamber. The more she told him, the more he understood, though he could not say he related. They had lived much different lives up to this point. Though he had experiences of his own to share, perhaps he would share one.
"I had not been created to experience those wars, but I was involved in more recent ones. Such as the assault on Vinox 7. During the standoff, I was sent to the Central Palace to eliminate the leaders of their military. Nothing living left that place, but I and their military fell into chaos and inevitably defeated." Obsidian said, but the tone he used was one that he might have used if he was reading it from a book, rather than by one who had been there.
Her words made Obsidian paused for a moment. When she put it that way, it did sound like what he and their race had done to Vinox was terrible. Vinox was not the only planet he had helped the Homeworld invade. He had been convinced that it was for the good of his race, but was he just being used as a tool for nefarious purposes? He grimaced briefly at the thought, then shook it off mentally.
"Your history is the past. Your actions here and now are what matter." He said to her as he followed her into the temple. The thought occurred briefly that he may be walking into a trap, but that never stopped him before. The temple door closed behind him and after glancing around quickly to take in his surroundings, his attention turned to the console as well and he approached it with her.

Meta tapped the center of the floating sphere that was her computer, and the ball split into a half-dozen facets, forming the frame-work for a 3D holographic map that floated in the air above Obsidian. It displayed the temple and everything within several hundred miles' radius, highlighting landmarks that were relevant.
"More than half of the corrupted Gems so far have come from the northwest. That's saying something, considering the circumstances of corruption can be extremely varied... Many of the rest have moved in patterns that correspond with warp-pad locations. Specifically, they seem to be moving AWAY from any and all warp-pads that aren't the Temple's central warp."
Meta gestured, and a matrix of arrows and dots formed on the map along with dates and environmental data, graphing where and when Corrupted had been spotted, and in what direction they'd been moving.
"That explains the increased levels of agitation amongst their number....."
Meta bit her lip.
"I think they're running. And it has to do with the warp-pads. Specifically, something IN the warp-pads."
Meta collapses the map.
"And that corresponds with something else."
Meta flicked her hand, and brought up a short, looped hologram of a black, shadowy, oily mass roiling over the beach. Several Gems Obsidian wouldn't know were fighting with it. The video zoomed back to show the broader spectrum of the beach. Suddenly, a blinding blue-white beam of light so bright it caused the camera to momentarily lose focus tore across the beach, originating from just under the camera, and incinerated the shadow-thing.
"An Umbra. I've encountered several myself so far. I've killed two of the three I encountered, as the video shows. But they're getting bolder. More dangerous. The one I fought most recently managed to escape.... With another Gem as hostage. It said something about "dwelling within the place that's on the way to everything, but seldom visited". And it makes sense. Warpspace. Who in Goddess' name would linger in Warpspace unless they had to?"
Obsdidian quietly listened and observed the holograms as they displayed what Meta commanded them to. Now it was clear that there were more than just corrupted to deal with, there were these....Umbras. If the Umbras were coming from Warpspace, then that is likely where they were being created.
"The corrupt fear these...Umbras. The Umbras are a greater threat. If they are coming from Warpspace, then they can appear anywhere there is a warp pad. They must be destroyed." He said, then paused and and looked down at the floor. "There is one.....problem. In the cold of Warpspace, I will gradually weaken until I retreat into my gem. I can bring magma with me to slow the process down, but even that will grow cold and harden." He looked back up at her now.
"We'll need other Gems to help. We should go out and gather other Gems-"
She turned the console off with a gesture and powered it down, the sphere darkening.
"There are plenty wandering around. I'd take Alex, but......"
She bit her lip, realizing she'd never actually mentioned the young, amnesiac aerokinetic Gem to Obsidian.
"Well, I suppose he'll end coming one way or another. The point is, we need more Gems to help. We should get together as many as we can; find Gems, spread the word,"
Meta paced out of the room and out of the temple, stepping out onto the beach.
"You mind heading out and seeing if you can get started with that? I'm going to hop on the data-nets and see if there's anyone with a ship or another console I can contact. Then I'll head out to join you."
Obsidian didn't inquire regarding who Alex was. When it became important to know who he was, he was sure he would find out. Obsidian followed Meta out of the temple and onto the beach. He began to think about where to start recruiting, but the answer came to him quickly. Of course, he could ask his fellow HOD members and chances were, they would go for it, especially Zablan.
"I will get started immediately. I might already know a few gems who would be more than willing to engage the Umbras with us." He said to Meta.
Finding Zablan first would be the easiest way, though he wouldn't hesitate to ask other HOD members first, if he encountered them first. Obsidian then gave Meta a nod and a light bow before leaving.

This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
All gems on earth are still stranded, the communication hub is still offline and all the space warps are shattered, it has now been revealed that this is the work of Rose Quartz and her small group known as the Crystal gems. They have rebelled against Homeworld and have chosen to protect the Earth (Trapping themselves on Homeworld to keep the warps down).
Now both sides are fighting among themselves along with fighting against the 'Corruption' a virus is infecting many gems turning most of them into mindless monsters, but those with a stronger will seem to becoming something more sinister.
The Game has changed now. The question has finally been posed, are you against Homeworld or allied with them. Or do you have your own agenda that may or may not been assisted by the ‘Corruption’. Regardless the seeds have been placed down and although it is only the beginning the fight for or against Earth and the corruption has begun. The choice is yours for how it is shaped on the Original Steven Universe Roleplay Site.
