Gems, unlike heat were immune (mostly) to extreme cold. That didn't make trudging through the Arctic far from home without any of her Bismuths any less annoying and uncomfortable. The blizzard producing heavy snowfall and driving winds was ignored in favor of checking Topaz's half-working holopad, checking her course as she had done several times before. The Wave Disruptor had been brought ahead of her and should be waiting on sight for installation, if all went according to plan. Snow underfoot soon turned to ice, and before long Topaz came upon the sight of a large dip in the ground, a myriad of Amethysts digging away at the frozen liquid, the distinct shape of the Wave Disruptor sitting in the middle of the crater. Some of the Amethysts appeared to be on guard duty, and the one that stepped up - presumably to inquire about Topaz's business here - quickly stepped back, head down as she recognized the Forgemaster. She sighed heavily for a moment, making her way down below and stopping, tilting her head as she decided to seek the help of one of the Amethysts. Picking one at random, Topaz strode up and tapped her on the shoulder.
6UE had a grim expression on her face, knowing that she was on thin ice. After her last secret excursion from the site she'd been lucky that the other Amethysts were willing to buy her story, but she feared they might not buy it again. The soldier was so caught up in thought, she'd zoned out as her body was on autopilot, tossing blocks of permanent ice that stood between the Earth and it's own undoing. Each block thumped against the pile of others, crushing each other and sending splinters of ice flying with the force of her hasty work. As quick as she was going, she knew Padparadscha would want her to work faster. Amethyst couldn't help but to feel a pang of regret whenever she thought about that gem.
The tap on her shoulder sent a shock through her, and she let the next block of ice slip straight out of her hands, smacking into the ice below, cracking both but shattering neither. "Uh-- kinda workin' here," She grumbled, almost sounding indignant as she glanced over her shoulder with one thick brow cocked. Then both brows shot up when she was faced with a gem, a fancy looking one at that, who she didn't recognize at all,"Uh! B-but-- er-- I wasn't expecting--" She stuttered, realizing this was an important gem she'd just tried to blow off, her thick mane of lavender hair flowing behind her as she whipped around to fully face the gem, her thick arms flexed to create a Diamond salute,"Apologies, ma'am!" She took on the soldier's poker face, but her gut felt like it had been punched; she'd already spurned enough nobles to get herself thrown into a manual labor task, and if she miffed off the wrong gem, she imagined she'd be tied to a rocket and hurled into the asteroid belt remorselessly. What if this gem was here to take her away, what if they already knew of her secret escapades? 6UE was sweating, despite the blizzard whirling over the quarry,"Awaiting orders, ma'am!"

"Don't worry about it." Topaz said casually, waving it off. "No need for formalities around me - I just need your help for a bit getting the machine in the center up and running." She could relate with the Amethyst - when Topaz got into a groove during her work, Diamond have mercy on any Gem that interrupted her rhythm. Which is what probably landed the Amethyst here in the first place - earning the ire of the wrong noble at the wrong time, as it wasn't often to see Quartzes that seemed to be in perfect condition assigned to menial labor tasks. Without waiting for a proper response, Topaz turned on her heel and began walking towards the Wave Disruptor once more, mind set on the goal.
Her indigo eyes flicked from side to side, she suddenly remembered that she'd heard something about some kind of tech installation happening today. It made her less nervous, but she still couldn't let herself relax. As the gem claimed to prefer informality she let her Diamond salute fall, but maintained her poker face even as the gem had swiveled to get back up out of the quarry. "Right away ma'am," She answered hastily, it seemed to be more of a reflex than a response.
6UE had been given the run-around before, she knew many of the upper echelon had their fun at the expense of lower caste gems, or weren't always rational about what a quartz could realistically accomplish within a given set of parameters. Rather than take this gem's word for it, she opted for the safer option-- do exactly what she was told, no more and no less, especially considering the situation she was in. Even that wasn't enough in some cases; her recent firing from the Pink Court investigations unit was still a sore spot.
She was silent as she paced after the gem, hoping what she said was true, that she really did just need some help. As she followed the tall stranger, other amethysts glanced up from what they were doing toward 6UE and the new comer, or between each other, making her increasingly self conscious. Already having been humiliated enough in front of her unit, she really wanted to just lay low, but it seemed to be impossible. Her shoulders rose as eyes were on her, until the two of them emerged at the tundra's surface. Wind whipped around them, sending swathes of powder drifting over them, and she glanced around to catch sight of the machinery she'd be working with.

The Wave Disruptor sat patiently, and for a moment Topaz hesitated, fully considering what would happen were she to activate it. Service to her Diamond and protection of comrades - right? Then why... did she feel such remorse in setting the machine up. Realizing the Amethyst was still with her, Topaz shook herself out of here thoughts and turned slowly to the purple gem, loosely gesturing with her free hand up at the machine. "The control panels are already in place." Topaz stated, voice steady despite her turmoil. "I need you to help me lift the main pillar back up, as the lifting mechanism is frozen over. Once on, the machine's heat should be enough to keep it thawed, but for now we've to move everything into its proper position, understand?"
As she looked the machine over, a frown tugged at the corner of her lips. It was bad enough knowing the gist of what they were even doing here in the first place, but what was this thing? It wasn't the most diabolical looking thing she'd ever seen, but looks could be deceiving. Her eyes slid over to the gem who had led her to it. Another gem just following orders, like all the rest? While her eyes focused onto the gem, her gaze seemingly frozen for a second, she answered with a grim acceptance that could seem out of place,"Understood."
Her eyes snapped off of the gem, and she let air pass in a silent sigh through her nostrils as she glanced around for said pillar. When she spotted it, she marched over and looked it up and down. It was huge and unwieldy, but nothing she and this other burly gem couldn't handle. The concept of what the gem wanted her to do sounded simple enough, though, it'd be a shame if something were to go awry and incapacitate this machine, setting back the project entirely...
The thought passed over her mind, but ultimately it wouldn't be a good idea for her to try to mess anything up, especially considering she had no idea what this even was. She scratched her head as she looked back over it,"Erm..." If this important seeming gem wanted informality, maybe she'd be open to a few questions? 6UE really wasn't sure if that was a good idea either, but she'd never have answers if she just went along with everything the way she was expected to,"So...what is it anyway? If you don't mind me askin', ma'am,"

"Its pet name is the "Wave Disruptor". After a short charging period, it releases a specific type of wave that... somehow destabilizes our physical forms. Not to the effectiveness of a handheld destabilizer, I'm afraid, but it works nonetheless. Padparadscha 10C8A 8QE had it commissioned for this site as a protection measure, presumably against rebel gems. Now then..." Topaz waded over and gripped part of the bottom pillar. "As I said, this needs to be raised before it can be activated." Something was slightly off about the Amethyst. Of all the Quartzes Topaz has spoken with, the confirmation that she preferred to speak informally often set them at ease, but this one seemed tense still - as if nervous about something. Not that it was her business - perhaps she was still off put by high ranking gems after being presumably demoted. Or perhaps not.
The frown on her lips deepened; this was some anti-rebel measures after all. Amethyst didn't know what to think, or what to do, or if she should do anything other than what she had already determined. Going along with things would be easiest, for now. She couldn't help but to ask if it were the right thing to do, if it were even possible for her to do the right thing at this juncture. Instead of stewing too much she shook the thoughts off and pressed her lips, then began to speak without thinking much about what came out, taking a more conversational tone.
"Oh yeah, I guess I shoulda known, she's always goin' off about rebs, worried they'll set back her giant laser," 6UE grumbled, and scratched the back of her head, then her eyes flicked away as she realized her tone could be taken the wrong way,"I mean, you know, as she should...who wouldn't want a giant laser," She chuckled nervously and swallowed as she squatted down, flexing to brace for the weight of the pillar, then lifted her end of it with some exertion. 6UE gave a sigh; Padparadscha had given her a wonderful opportunity, then took it away as suddenly as it had been granted. For now, she would concentrate on getting this gem's tech running.
Supporting the weight of the solid pillar would've been easier without the wind storm that was howling over the tundra, or flakes of snow gusting into her eyes, but her natural stability and strength helped her to keep her grip on the icy structure. She glanced over her shoulder to calculate her trajectory, then looked back over to the gem who'd employed her help,"Ready when you are," Whenever the gem would begin bringing over the pillar, she would follow.

Topaz cracked a thin smile despite her best efforts to remain passive. "I'd certainly like a giant laser, as that isn't what this is." She quirked an eyebrow, striding up to the central pillar. "Hopefully it won't even have to be used. Though if it does, I designed it to be non-lethal on contact. I'll leave the judgement of rebels up to... well, not me for sure. I hope they all get a flawless Zircon to defend them." As if they would be receiving a defense in the first place. Topaz pushed the thought out of her mind, instead opting to take out one of her swords and slowly hover it near the surface of the machine's joints. "I'm going to thaw a bit of it out first, then we can proceed." A few minutes later, the frost was mostly gone - and Topaz proceeded to grip the bottom and nod to the Amethyst.
It was a surprise to hear an upper echelon gem suggest that rebels should be given any kind of mercy. She knew her ex-patron was on the more merciful side, and even she advocated for the immediate "reconditioning" and experimentation of those unfortunate gems she captured. For a moment, Amethyst considered herself in that position; what if she were standing in front of Pink Diamond, with a truth sensing sapphire and a Zircon bearing down over her? It wasn't just the cold that gave her shivers, but the very fact that she even had that thought, that she was even attempting to empathize with rebels-- what was she thinking?
She snapped out of her zone of thought, trying to shake it off. "Oh-- uh-- I can help," She uttered as she realized the machine needed to be thawed some before it was put whose name and true status were still unknown to her, but she didn't particularly speculate. Instead, she concentrated on trying to summon the fire that she knew she could, she'd done it before. Though, actually activating this power remained rather mysterious to her. For a moment, the quartz just looked like she was concentrating really hard, her jaw set and expression serious, though not much was happened. 6UE felt a bit self conscious, her nerves started to pique, as well as frustration.
Then, a combustion burst out across her hands, and began to run up her arms like a small forest fire. The flame matched the multiple hues of her complexion as it scoured ranging from the same deep indigo of her eyes, to brighter violets and light lavenders. Along with the flame, a big smile broke out over her face,"Got it! Heh," Though, the wind carrying over them threatened to blow over what she had managed to conjure.

"You've flames at your command? Interesting." Topaz commented, watching idly as the icy arctic winds threatened to snuff the purple fire. "I think I got most of it, but you're welcome to do more if you wish before we proceed." Topaz stepped back for a moment, allowing the Amethyst room to help. She still seem distracted by something, though Topaz could hardly fathom what. Was is being called on by an 'upper class' Gem? Nerves in making a mistake? Or perhaps... "Say, Amethyst... what is your opinion on the rebellion? I'm awfully curious on what you have to say." Perhaps the casual tone and subject of the message would catch her off guard, making her 'spill the beans' as humans say.
The quartz continued to concentrate on trying to hold the flames and get them hotter, almost straining to do so. She wasn't yet sure how exactly her power activated, but she was relieved that it had-- otherwise she'd look a bit crazy in front of this important seeming gem. Part of her had to wonder why this gem hadn't sent a gaggle of underlings to do her bidding for her, but Amethyst respected the fact that she'd opted to get it done herself.
Just as Amethyst opened her mouth to talk about the strange way she'd uncovered this ability, the gem continued, the quartz was entirely caught off guard. The word rebellion snapped through her like an electrical shock, the fire burst and sputtered as her nerves were suddenly ignited on another level. As she reeled from the pointed question her grip on the pillar slipped, but she managed to prevent it from entirely sliding out of her hands, "W-what do I think? A-about the rebellion?" She uttered, her eyes wide. Had she miscalculated, did this gem already catch her red handed and was here to investigate her? If she was nervous before, the quartz was sweating bullets now,"Uh-- I-- I mean, I'm just a quartz you know, gotta do what the higher ups say-- I don't mind, it's what I was made for right?" She swallowed, what if this gem had a truth sense of a kind, just like Padparadscha? What if this gem could read minds or see the future? Higher caste gems could be a pain to deal with, but they always had some manner of frightening power; perhaps the hole she was digging for herself had already come to a head. "Doesn't really matter what I think, does it?" Amethyst gave a nervous smile, holding the pillar with a vice grip.
"I disagree. Our common soldiers need to be heard - one point of view drowns our vision." Topaz's eyes narrowed slightly as the Gem's grip slipped, but said nothing. The Amethyst then stuttered through an explanation, hands readjusting on the pillar once more. "How about this? You ask any question you want of me and I'll answer it truthfully. Then... I ask you whats wrong and you answer truthfully - if it won't involve you getting harmed. I swear on my own honor that what I hear won't leave this bitter wasteland." Topaz cracked a slight smile at the last part, hoping the joke would warm up the Quartz to her. They wouldn't get much done if the Amethyst was wary of her the whole time.
She stared at the gem for a moment, unable to truly absorb what was said as her mind raced. Then, what the gem was suggesting hit her with full force, 6UE's eyes flicked away, her nervous expression shaded into the turmoil she had been trying to mask. How was she suppose to tell this gem what she thought if she didn't even know what to think? Everything was a confusion for her, even simply helping this gem set up a protective measure for her allies gave her inner conflict. It was a shock to hear that this gem seemed to care so much about what a common Amethyst thought about something that she had no place having thoughts about in the first place.
If she agreed to this, was she going to have the carpet yanked out from under her? It were times like these when she wished he had some fancy ability to tell truths or read minds, but it seemed this other gem didn't herself. "Fine," She finally piped up after her moment of thought, still tightly gripping the equipment as its temperature was risen by the kinetic abilities of both gems,"I'll tell you what I think, after you tell me what you think," 6UE's jaw set and she squared herself to look directly at the gem. If the gem was so interested in what a below-average, defective cut Amethyst thought about the rebellion, she must've had some thoughts of her own on the subject. In the event that this gem were to go back on what she said, revealing the truth of what she thought would certainly bring her demise; there was no pressing need from Homeworld to keep around soldier's like her.
"By technicalities and from a morality standpoint, the Crystal Gems are clearly the ones in right." Topaz stated calmly. "They propose a world in which all life is preserved and every Gem purportedly has the will to choose what they think is best." Pausing for a moment, her lips pursed in concentration as she considered what words to say next. "However... that world, as perfect as it may sound, can not work with Gems. Take into consideration our very being - at our cores we are what humans call 'computers' embedded into stones and we display ourselves as light constructs. We require the defilement of a planet to create a new copy of our kind, and at base we simply come packaged with the ability to invade new worlds to continue our own survival. Indeed, 'defective' does not necessarily mean physically - if any amount of our 'programming' is screwed up, we end up defective. In a perfect world, flawless Gems would only expand to facilitate the bare minimum of our species' growth and all would be content will their role - that is our intended programming." Topaz looked away, hiding a single tear that threatened to fall. "Unfortunately for us, Gems aren't easily made flawlessly. Myself included - infact, I am one of the most 'defective' nobles that Homeworld has kept around. This is most likely because I recognize the need for expansion and follow orders."

This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
All gems on earth are still stranded, the communication hub is still offline and all the space warps are shattered, it has now been revealed that this is the work of Rose Quartz and her small group known as the Crystal gems. They have rebelled against Homeworld and have chosen to protect the Earth (Trapping themselves on Homeworld to keep the warps down).
Now both sides are fighting among themselves along with fighting against the 'Corruption' a virus is infecting many gems turning most of them into mindless monsters, but those with a stronger will seem to becoming something more sinister.
The Game has changed now. The question has finally been posed, are you against Homeworld or allied with them. Or do you have your own agenda that may or may not been assisted by the ‘Corruption’.
