Amber frowned, wiping tiredness from her eyes. What a weird thing to feel -tiredness and exhaustion, such human traits.
She sat on a random city bench, inwardly cringing at the stench of pollution exhausted by human vehicles. She never understood those. Sure, Gems had their own space crafts and vehicles, but nothing that would ever bring any harm to themselves and their worlds. Humans? They only hurt, and damage, and destroy, even in their most beautiful creations, and Amber couldn't understand it.
That hardly mattered, though. There were more pressing matters, and most of these humans were too blind to see the secret turmoil beneath the skin of their very own planet. Pressing matters that Amber seemed to have been collectively ignoring.
The small girl sighed as she sat back against the backrest, shivering as the cold metal touched her gem. It was a rather dusky night, and the air was chillier than usual -a slight coming difference between the human seasons that later would be more drastic. The skyline was up against a rainbow watercolor sunset, which seemed to be the only thing beautiful in this city.
And everything else was just... repetitive and boring... for now.
Howlite was on a drunk parkour run through Empire City. He moved from building to building like a bird in flight. He stopped at a vantage point to get a bird's eye view of the city. It was quite beautiful which was why he lived there. He switched to Tracker Vision to see if he could spot anyone. Eventually he picked up a signature. An Amber gem? He hadn't seen one of those since he left Homeworld all those years ago. He decided to make a friend today. He dropped down silently and snuck up to the gem. He then sat next to her on the bench.
"Beautiful day out eh? Name's Howlite. What's an Amber doing all the way out here?"
Amber looked up at the Howlite, something mixed between gentle surprise and neutralness showing in her eyes. She wasn't surprised to see yet another Gem -they were highly common and they seemed to run into each other as if an unknown force drew them to one another. Yet she was somehow surprised at how casual and straightforward Howlite seemed; most gems are wary, or at least from what she's experienced -including herself.
"A mission," Amber replied quietly, sort of shy in the stranger's presence. "Or at least I'm suppose to be, I think." She frowned, feeling the urge to return to the Glass City of which was her lonely yet occupied domain. But... that seemed so... normal, so regular, repetitive, without much of anything to make a show of it. Amber tilted her head, "What about you, Mr. Howlite?"
"Obsidian, huh?" Amber tilted her head, but her eyes went round and a smile blessed her face as she saw the picture. "I know her! She's a really good friend of mine. Helped to show me the ropes when I woke up." Amber seemed to become more relaxed around Howlite as now they had something in common at least: a good friend! Or... in Howlite's case, girlfriend? What's a girlfriend? Oh well.
When Howlite offered her some vodka, she tilted her head. What.. was that fowl smelling liquid in that bottle? It looked like water...? Amber carefully accepted the bottle and examined it. How... odd. She brought it to her lips and cringed at the strong taste of it. However that didn't stop her from taking a couple swigs more before passing it back. It wasn't her cup of tea, exactly, but Gems could handle a lot more than humans can. "Thank you. What is it?"
"It's Vodka. Looks like water but hits like a truck."
He drank down the rest of the bottle and smiled.
"Perhaps we should hang out. It wouldn't hurt for us to get to know each other since we both know Obsidian. So tell me a bit about yourself. Im sure there's more to you than sitting on a bench watching the sunset."
As he waited for her response, he found himself staring up at the stars. He had promised to one day take Obsidian up there. But he wasn't sure if he'd make it to the end of the war. With all that had been happening, he prayed he could keep her safe.
"Oh, there's uh... nothing special about me," Amber shrugged, coming to terms -though a bit negatively- about not being the Gem she was suppose to be. "Just a healing Gem thankfully caught in a painful neutrality and whom just wants to go home and please her Diamond that will never notice her." She smiled, though it was small and timid -not at all holding an confidence. Truth was, she desperately still wanted to please her Diamond, but how was her current job going to do that? If she could just find some way to heal them....
Amber sighed, kicking her legs slightly. She could sense Howlite's discomfort, but could not sense his thoughts. She tilted her head, "What about you? And how'd you come to know Obsidian?"
"Don't worry so much about the Diamonds. I cast them out of my life long ago and my life's gotten way better."
Then she asked about him.
"Oh the usual. Just your typical defect assassin who did his job perfectly and grew tired of taking orders. Now I drink and fight to my heart's content."
Her next question made him smile.
"Oh it's a lovely story. You see, I had gone through a bad break up and desperately needed to feel love again. When I met Obsidian, she was the most beautiful gem I'd ever seen. I figured the best I'd get was a one night stand. Then she fell in love with me and we've been together since. She's the only person who enjoys the real me and doesn't want me to change."
"Don't worry about the Diamonds?!" Amber widened her eyes. "What do you mean 'don't worry about the Diamonds'? The Diamonds are a big thing to worry about! They're... they're our leaders! They're strong! They're the most intelligent, most pure, the most..." Her voice went quieter as she said the next part, "Perfect...." Amber looked away, fiddling with the hem of her dress. "They're gonna get us out of this mess, I have faith in that."
Did she though? Did she really? It seemed that hope kept getting lost or misplaced, and rekindling it seemed harder and harder the longer she had to sit on this miserable rock with the same corrupted faces holed up in the cells of the Glass City. But she had to have faith in her Diamond. It was the reason she was here in the first place.
But the Diamonds were also the reason why this war was happening.
She sighed, choosing to move on from the topic, "I'm glad you and Obsidian seem happy with each other, at least." The thought of those two together created a ping in her stomach. What was this ping...? She couldn't quite place it; but the thought of being alone made it worse. She cleared her throat, "How is she doing, by the way? Haven't seen her in along time...."
Howlite beamed. He could talk about Obsidian for years!
"Oh she's doing wonderful! She's dancing, partying, we even went on a date recently. She's the best thing that's ever happened to me. I feel peaceful when I'm around her. No hate. No bloodlust. Just love for her. I know it sounds cliche but it's true love."
He then sighed.
"You seem like a pretty good person Amber. That's a lot coming from me since I hate almost everyone I meet. But you seem different. You seem like we could be best friends. We should stay in touch after I leave here. It won't be for a couple days but when I do, I'd like to still talk to you. Do you have a cellphone you could use?"
"Cell.. phone?" Amber tilted her head, confused for only a moment before flashes of human memory played out in her head. Small rectangular devices used for communication purposes. Alright. "No," she shook her head after a moment. "I don't have any of the sort. Communication controls and hubs are still down at the Glass City. I'm..." the term 'isolated' materialized in her head, but she dismissed it. "Where can I achieve these human cellular communication boxes?" She's seen them often; it seemed like humans of all organic development levels use them. Seeing as how Earth is nowhere near as advanced as Homeworld, it should not be hard learning how to operate one.
Howlite's request about keeping in contact with her surprised Amber slightly. She even hardly kept in contact with Obsidian anymore, sadly, and they had been close for a while. Still, it gave the smol orange gem some hope.
"Only on Earth?" Amber looked at the device. What if they go back to Homeworld soon? She wouldn't be able to call him there? However, she kept the device without further complaint and smiled up at Howlite.
"Um, sure. I'm not too knowledgeable on what there is to do around here for ... fun? That is the objective of your proposal, right?" She tilted her head, trying to recall some human memories that she once before considered irrelevant. Odd how as times progress those memories become increasingly vital. Perhaps she was studying the wrong race?
Thoughts suddenly went back to her old days with Obsidian, chasing around bad guys and spending nights together in her apartment watching movies and eating fluffy white clouds that the humans called popcorn. She wondered if Howlite did activities similar to that.
"Yeah but why would I go anywhere other than Earth. Though I do plan to take Obsidian to space once this war is over if I'm still alive. Anywho yeah let's have some fun. Let's see... You like movies? I got a guy who owns a theatre and he'll let us borrow it for the right price. Luckily I'm rich. Let me just make a quick call."
He pulled out his cellphone and made a call.
"Hey Bill it's Howlite. Listen I need to borrow your theatre for a little while. I'm taking my friend Amber to the movies. Yes I'm gonna pay for everything. Mhm. Mhm. Yeah no I hear you I'll handle it. Mhm. Mhm. Yeah that sounds lovely. I'll see you around."
Amber nodded. Movies, huh? She remembered the old days, about a year ago, her and Obsidian hanging out for about the first time. Popcorns and movies. Bad guys and street chases. Ah the days~
However, she had never been to a human theatre, and her human memories supplied little information for it. "So... they're movie places, huh? Theatres? Are they like human houses? And what movie would we be watching? And how far away is it?" It would be so simple for her to use her wings, but if the theatre was such a long distance away, she wouldn't want Howlite to be left alone. The city was beautiful, but there were shady places and shady people, too. Though Amber had no doubts about how well Howlite could take care of himself, Empire City was hardly a place to wander in alone.

This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
All gems on earth are still stranded, the communication hub is still offline and all the space warps are shattered, it has now been revealed that this is the work of Rose Quartz and her small group known as the Crystal gems. They have rebelled against Homeworld and have chosen to protect the Earth (Trapping themselves on Homeworld to keep the warps down).
Now both sides are fighting among themselves along with fighting against the 'Corruption' a virus is infecting many gems turning most of them into mindless monsters, but those with a stronger will seem to becoming something more sinister.
The Game has changed now. The question has finally been posed, are you against Homeworld or allied with them. Or do you have your own agenda that may or may not been assisted by the ‘Corruption’. Regardless the seeds have been placed down and although it is only the beginning the fight for or against Earth and the corruption has begun. The choice is yours for how it is shaped on the Original Steven Universe Roleplay Site.
