Though the Quartz was loath to admit it, due in great majority to the ever-growing hatred and derision for the Earth and it's denizens that they carried in their core, even 7XB was unable to deny the rather pleasant nature of the weather patterns prevalent in this particular region of the planet. From the moment they had descended upon the the isolated warp pad, the grizzled quartz soldier could feel the cool, pleasant ocean breeze upon their sun-warmed limbs, tossing their short, typically unmanageable mane of bleach-white hair about in the salty breeze.
Beach City. 7XB had only been here once before, and though the atmosphere at the time had been equally pleasant, their reason for being here now was no less serious..though certainty more spontaneous than before. Eyes trailed downwards to eye the simple communicator, rising a moment later to gaze out over the city, nestled against the ancient statue in the near distance.
But 7XB was not alone, not this time; A tall, colorful gem accompanied them, with colorations of swirling cream and orange. A Jasper, Silent and somber, like another gem they knew well.
“Stay alert. I've no doubt the rebels keep an eye on this warp pad.” They had, of course, taken a shuttle to the surface, but this location was much closer to where they has requested the sapphire meet them.
Not long after 7XB and their appointee had arrived, the crystalline warp pad flashed to life, and Padparadscha appeared in the light. Her hair fluttered in the oceanic breeze as she cast her gaze across the rolling green landscape, picking out the ancient carving in the distance juxtaposed against the modern human settlement, and the expanse of sparkling water it looked across. To go from the frigid cold of the project site, to the gentle warmth of Beach City's air was something of a shock to the senses. But, she recovered duly for a gem, blinking as she adjusted to the change of not only climate, but task. Both of these tasks had an underlying nerve factor, but here in particular, she was aware of a potent rebel threat; especially considering that she had run in with a rebel splinter group here not but hours ago.
Despite that, the sapphire's poise was fully in tact; back straight, chin high with her hands clasped in front of her. The atmosphere around her buzzed with free energy as she moved from the warp with quick, lively steps. Her eyes glimmered as they swept over the clear quartz, the giddiness welling in her chest compelled her more toward specifically them, unconsciously pulled in by the magnetic force that seemed intrinsic to them, "Commander 7XB!" She said in an upbeat tone, a beaming smile on her,"A surprise, and a pleasure. You've caught me at an opportune moment, I left as soon as I received your message," The sapphire slowed to a stop, angling toward her favorite quartz, but glanced with a discerning eye toward the other gem.
Like amethysts, jaspers were a common sight around Earth; it was hard to say whether she'd seen this particular gem before, but she was certain she'd never been introduced. She presumed, with some hesitation, that this gem was the one 7XB had scouted for her. The idea of that in and of itself still made her a bit uneasy; having a bodyguard in the first place went against the stubborn ideals she'd begun her journey with, but she couldn't deny that having one presented some peace of mind in a world that could be so unpredictable.
Their reasoning for calling her to meet them in Beach City of all places had lit her curiosity on fire, flickering in her gaze. Along with the prospect of seeing what this gem was all about, she wanted to see what 7XB would have to say for them. With her eyes passing up and down the jasper, her expression sobered somewhat, then she gestured toward her gemstone,"Padparadscha 10C8A 8QE, special task operative, official internal affairs investigator. And you?"
“Of course, Commander. I won't let anything sneak up on us. You said that the lady Padparadscha is meeting us here?”
7XB nodded, though their eyes never left the horizon to face the Jasper, instead following the distant rooftops upwards into the horizon. “That's right, 3JJ. If all goes well, her Clarity may consent to take you on for addition protection, though I make no promises.” The young Jasper has certainly proven herself as the most viable candidate that they had burned through in the last few weeks, but in the end it was not strictly up to them as to whether Padparadscha decided to take 3JJ on as a replacement for 6UE or not- in the end that was up to the Sapphire.
Speaking of the Sapphire, it seemed as though she has arrived..or at least the clear quartz hoped; It could just have easily been any number of rebels commuting from one of the countless warps across the colony.
Fortunately, that was not the case.
7XB turned on their heels, bringing their ankles together as they crossed their arms across their chest in a Diamond salute. “It's always a pleasure to see you, Your Clarity,” they replied, unable even now to hide the small glow of delight that colored their expression at being reunited with the Sapphire again, “I am glad my call found you available.”
As attention turned to the Jasper, 7XB grew quiet, allowing introductions to be made. “Jasper 9B8A-3JJ. I am honored to meet you, Your divine Clarity.” They looked fairly close to what one would expect of a Jasper, with a long, flowing mane and an orange gem set into her brow.
In the calm words of 7XB, even if they were more professionally hued for the task that they were about to embark upon, Padparadscha found a familiar warmth. She simply smiled at them, knowing what they said was true. Her hands went up to articulate a delicate, precise salute in return to the quartz gems, her eyes lingering on 3JJ as she decided her first impressions. She gave a bit of a smirk, knowing she would have to see more of this gem to make any sound judgments, but introductions were always a good way for her to get a baseline reading on a gem, to get a first look at their idiosyncrasies, and their psyche,"Ah, a delight to make your acquaintance 3JJ. I look forward to seeing your work," Her hands fell, eyes darted to 7XB as the last sentence left her lips. Seeing the clear quartz at work was always fascinating for her, but she would resign herself to the fact that her attention would need to be applied to a thorough evaluation of this new subject. Questions, analysis, that could be made later, after she had more raw data to work with.
She stepped up to stand next to the clear quartz, and let her own gaze slip over the scene. Things were quiet for now, but all of them were in a precarious position, for more ways than one. This area typically did a number on her nerves, leveling her energy into something more serious as she calculated her many situational contingency plans; here, she knew that criminal gems were not far. She swiveled to eye them.
"I have to say, Commander, that I'm quite intrigued as to why you've chosen this particular location," She admitted, still speaking in her usual brisk manner, but there was a bit of a lilt to her tone as she spoke to specifically them. They wouldn't call her to a place like this without a very good reason; already it seemed they had something in store for not only herself, but for the gem they had selected. The sapphire also had to wonder if she was the only one here who didn't already know what was going on, or if 3JJ too was in the dark.
Holding their attentive, respectful pose until the regal Sapphire had finished speaking, Jasper gave a nod of her head, allowing her arms to lower now. “I hope that I am adequate for your needs.” That is all the burly, creamy orange gem seemed to have to say, leaving 7XB to pick up the thread of conversation as the piercing, molten gaze of the sapphire cut towards them. It never ceases to amaze that such a small, fragile gem had a visage that could burn right through them, but they needed their focus elsewhere now.
Admittedly, it wasn't any easier as the Sapphire came to stand directly alongside them. They could feel the anxiety radiating off her, or was that their own? They all knew how dangerous this city could be, it was the rebel stronghold after all. “An astute concern, Your Clarity, certainly.” They began crisply, crossing their arms behind their back whilst turning to face the city in the distance. “I thought that a little bit of live-fire training might suffice in allowing 3JJ to prove herself to you. So far she has shown herself to be the best candidate in my search to find a suitable replacement for 6UE, who..” they paused, glancing about the hilltop, “I see you've already done away with?” despite it all, 7XB hoped for the best for the Amethyst.
“It's up to you, of course, whether you take her. She's the best cut I've found in this solar system.” It was no Yellow Diamond Jasper, to be sure, but this was the best they could do.
She gave a nod in acknowledgement of 3JJ, it was good to know that the Jasper knew what this was about, but the sapphire's attention was swept up in 7XB's voice as they began to speak. "I see," She answered their last statement, eyeing them with the wistful look that settled into her expression each time she was reminded of the fleeting nature of time; specifically, her time with 7XB. They could scour the universe, every solar system in the empire, and never find a gem who was exactly what she was looking for. Unless they brought themselves, of course-- which they had, but she had little pretense for sending 3JJ on her way. Not for lack of trying; it was irresponsible of her, perhaps, but if her close comrade had found this gem adequate, why shouldn't she?
"I haven't gotten ridof her per se," She added, remembering what the commander had said weeks ago, that they had once been similar to the young amethyst. For the time being, however, she needed a more effectual bodyguard,"I've reassigned her, and nineteen other quartz, to the initial stage of a project," a project staying ambiguous, despite the fact that she didn't expect 7XB nor 3JJ to know which project she was referring to,"She is currently hard at work, provided the team isn't breaking protocol in my absence," It was easy to imagine that twenty amethysts would veer off without management, but it was good that Pink Pearl was there to keep them on the up and up. Opting not to bring 6UE had come from wanting as little standing between her and the clear quartz as possible; aside, she knew they wouldn't allow anything to happen to her.
"Now...live fire training," Padparadscha tapped her chin glancing over to the clear quartz as she thought,"Rebel busting, is it?" Despite knowing this area was brimming with enemies, she hadn't known why. She could make guesses, but further investigation had been stymied by attention to other tasks. This could serve as a time to show 3JJ what her work would entail, once she began her position as Padparadscha's bodyguard,"I'll take this opportunity to do some evidence gathering. Along with other concerns, I've sought an answer as to why rebels seem to congregate in this area for quite some time..." As she eyed the clear quartz, she figured they must've come to a similar conclusion about this general area and it's perils. Did they know something she didn't?
7XB could not help but look rather pleased- both they and Padparadscha seemed to be on the same page as to the purposes this training location would fufill. 7XB knew, and they had taken care to inform 3JJ as well as they could without overstepping their own bounds, that what Padparadscha needed was a gem to keep her safe in the, regrettably, dangerous environments she was known to frequent. Not only that, but the gem in question would often need to find a way to do so without any interference to her work.
It was not an.. easy task, admittedly.
More over, the Quartz was curious as to exactly what sort of 'project’ the Sapphire might be working on that would require twenty Amethysts. Perhaps they would ask, when it seemed appropriate.
“Very good. I believe this would be the perfect opportunity to test run 3JJ. And…” they couldn't help but grin, cracking their knuckles, “ maybe we'll find some rebels.”
She wasn't as eager as 7XB to stumble upon rebels, especially not since her last suspects had put her through such an odyssey. But she couldn't help but to smile herself at the opportunity to see them do so, to express their anticipation in doing what they were built for. She supposed it wasn't that different from her own eagerness to find the answers to her questions, or to stumble upon a clue to analyze. In a way, they anticipated another aspect of the same goal; to locate and detain criminals.
"Excellent," She beamed, selecting the appropriate plan from her internal repertoire, "I suppose we should begin tracking the enemy. Now, I've been under the impression for some time now that, in this area, somewhere, there is a rebel hideaway. There isn't much else I can deduce at this time, as I've been unable to put as much attention on that particular investigation," the more her project grew, the more her investigative work would have to shrink. The thought brought on a pang, but she didn't allow herself to contemplate what that dull feeling meant to her.
Her eyes went between 3JJ and 7XB as she continued to speak, but what she would say next was more for 3JJ; still, her minor disagreement with the clear quartz over free honesty was something that floated through her mind,"I would ask that you do offer any and all observations that you make, any prior information you believe should be applied to this investigation; but often, things that don't initially appear significant become so when new data comes to light," And it was, from that point on, an investigative operation. She eyed 3JJ,"Of course, security should be your first priority," When her spiel was over, she returned her attention to the clear quartz,"So, shall we begin to look for leads?" Even if she had made it into an investigation, she thought of them as being just as in charge here as she was.
The Jasper gave a solemn, serious nod as the Sapphire, again, addressed them directly, crossing their arms across their chest once again- it was clear that 3JJ was eager to impressed Padparadscha, and the yellow diamond quartz that had laid such an opportunity at her feet, though only time would tell if they proved worthy. 7XB, for their part, seemed to perk up at the mention of a rebel hideaway, as it seemed that their prior experience here in the city would be beneficial after all.
“As it just so happens, Your Clarity,” they began with a gesture towards the horizon, more specifically the towering, gem-shaped silhouette in the distance, “ I was able to locate a rather heavily fortified location upon my last visit here. It appears to have been erected upon the outskirts of this human settlement by the rebellion, or at the very least appropriated by them. Allow me to lead the way."
Assuming that neither the Sapphire nor the Jasper had any qualms with their proposal, 7XB turned to descended the hill, dropping down the small ledge rather than the obvious, gently sloping path that ran alongside it.
So far, 3JJ seemed to have a good sense for propriety, and she had seemed genuine to this point, but the sapphire was well aware of the fact that there was still much to know about this gem. After all, 6UE too had shown a great eagerness to impress her in the beginning, only to let herself become too comfortable with her aristocratic patron, too comfortable with an ineffectual performance, leading to her eventual reassignment. The noble detective was thoroughly accustomed to making hard judgments with the revelations of hard truths.
Upon hearing that 7XB not only already had a lead, but an entire answer to the question she sought after, her brows shot up. Her eyes darted to the structure they had gestured toward; there was no missing it, she had seen it before, but it had been only one of many locales that she had marked as a possible hideout. Not only did they seem to have confirmation that it was in fact a hideout, but that it was heavily fortified; crucial information she would relay to her network. But, their information caused a plethora of new questions to burst into the space that the old one once occupied; she organized them as she scurried to catch up with the clear quartz.
"Heavily fortified does bring reservations to mind," She lowered her voice somewhat, not wanting to be overheard by the criminals in question. She carefully lowered herself down the ledge, then brushed off her jumpsuit as she moved to keep stride with them,"But-- well, this information is groundbreaking Commander. I have scoured numerous gemkind sites over the course of my time here, and I've only happened across dead ends," In hindsight, it seemed so obvious that the rebels would board themselves up here, yet there was a time when it hadn't seemed as such, and she had to wonder,"I must say I'm extremely curious to know how you came to confirm this," Had they any evidence? An informant? It was hard for her to imagine the work of a gem like them; they weren't the typical quartz by any means, not in her eyes, and even if they were, it wouldn't be something easy for her to grasp. Howthey'd found it out would not only serve to give her valuable data to work with, but to open a window for her to see into the world of 7XB, which she had only marginally been a part of; the long, sustained gaps in her knowledge of them continued to prod the back of her mind.
The grizzled gem had expected the inquisitive Sapphire to have questions- after all, such information must have surely had some manner of grandiose adventure behind it, especially with how the Quartz knew Padparadscha perceived them. While that was not always the case, in this instance it definitely was, and 7XB found themselves unusually willing to discuss it. The vast majority of their missions, whether the operations themselves could truly be considered 'top-secret’ or not, was typically not a topic 7XB like reminiscing upon. There was always a new mission after the last, and a gem soldier needed their focus in the here and now.
Today though, for some reason that 7XB couldn't quite fathom themselves, they didn't feel nearly as secretive. Maybe it was this unusually pleasant weather, or the desire to serve as a proper example to 3JJ. Or was it a deeper feeling, an unwillingness to disappoint the curious sapphire when she seemed so genuinely excited to learn.
“It a bit of a long story,” the Quartz gem admitted without breaking their stride, as they knew she'd find a way to keep up, “but I stumbled upon this fortified locale on my last mission here. Quite by accident, I admit. As you know my primary mission was, and remains, the recovery of missing Homeworld assets.” Primarily gems, but technology as well. They were not quite as successful in this endeavor, even now, as they would like, but they had not failed either. Corrupted gems were as good as any, they supposed.
“To that effect, I was setting up a short range transmitter on the beach. The details of that..well, anyway, it happened to draw the attention of a gem that turned out to be a rebel. I made contact with yet another gem, who assisted me in tracking the rebel back to their hideaway.”
The sapphire listened with her eyes attentively on 7XB as they spoke. Her brows floated upward just a little at the mention of details, which was then subsequently dropped; to her, it was a short story, one where those details she wanted were left unsaid, but she tried her best to stuff down the urge to continue prying. After all, especially after what information they had shared with her before, she supposed that they would share what they willed when they willed it. She couldn't help but to feel a small twinge; did they not trust her to know those details, or was this more a masquerade for 3JJ? Choosing to believe the latter, the sapphire maintained her giddy mood; aside, if they didn't want to share in front of 3JJ, perhaps what happened was something they weren't proud of. Even if that was how they felt, the implications of their contribution made her puff up with pride for them.
"Incredible!" She breathed as she continued to try to keep up with the quartz's long strides,"Since the beginning of my deployment, I've tracked criminals, interrogated captures, combed this colony for signs of the enemy headquarters. If it's heavily fortified, then I can only assume that this must be it--" She glanced in the direction of Jasper, to indicate that the gem should be listening to her,"--but assumptions make for bad science. I'll definitely need samples, records, and perhaps even a testimony when this is over with," The detective kept walking as her voice paused. When this was over with, was she going to be saying goodbye to a strung out, damaged clear quartz? Confrontation with rebels on their turf didn't sound like something any of them could get away from without a few scuffs at the very least, even if it was something they seemed eager to do. She eyed 7XB for a moment before she continued in a lower voice,"You've secured an invaluable opportunity for me, I hope you know. Excellent work. Perhaps you and I can discuss the details sometime soon?"
With that, she tapped her wrist and brought up her holoscreen, beginning the process of taking down record of her observations so far. Though, most of her attention was on the gem she'd been excited to see again since the minute she'd watched them leave last time. As she walked, she shaded closer to them, and trusted 3JJ to keep an eye on the surroundings as they continued to follow the Commander's lead.
'Incredible’? That wasn't at all how 7XB would have described that day, but as it stood the quartz had always been their own worst critic. It had all been fairly standard fare as far as assignments went, though it still burned at the lumbering gem’s pride to dwell upon just how base and ineffective they had truly been in regards to their prime assignment. They had technically been 'recovering’ gems, sure, but a corrupted gem was about as useful as a broken item, good for little more than research and, honestly, what research was even left to be done that wouldn't lead to the very same dead ends as all other?
Truthfully, it had been the most ineffective mission that the Quartz, in their own mind, had undertaken, and it filled them with shame.
7XB feared that Padparadscha saw them through rose-colored glasses, as something they were not, and they dreaded the day when they may fail to live up to the Sapphire's expectations. “I am glad to hear that, Your Clarity,” they said in spite of their fears, muscles tensing in anticipation as their feet hit the pavement of the cul-de-sac that waited at the bottom of the hill, “It's good that my experience can be put to some use.” Their was a momentary pause, allowing their eyes to sweep about the buildings coming up around them. It was prudent to set a good example for 3JJ, but they couldn't help but smile at her quieter words.
Hard to interpret as they were, it was difficult for her to decide what laid behind those words. An expression of acknowledgement, without a particular enthusiasm, seemed to be a part of how this gem expressed themselves, but riding on her assumptions she had to wonder what was truly meant to be said. When assumptions were all she had, her curiosity only deepened, but was frustratingly stymied by her sensibilities in a context like this. Right now, she noted their focus, and didn't allow herself to jump to conclusions, as difficult as that could be at times.
Her own tension grew as 7XB surveyed the surroundings; at any moment, criminals could burst from the woodwork and this small team of Homeworlders would have to deal with them. Admittedly, even if the team was small, she felt much more safe in the presence of 7XB than she would otherwise. Their smile gave her one as well, but her eyes flicked away from them at the answer offered.
After listening to the breeze and the ambient chirping of birds, she spoke quietly so as not to be heard by humans or other gems,"I cannot understate its importance. Including what information, and perhaps suspects captured, this is a case I must present to the Court. A full engagement could ensue; that would certainly bring piece of mind," Without a central place to gather gempower and resources, the rebels would have what organization they'd mustered obliterated, and she could relax more when working with the installation team, or any team for that matter. For the loyalist sapphire, that thought was enough to make her light smile draw up into more of a spiteful smirk as she stared at the hill that now obscured the location the clear quartz lead her toward.
The warmth of the early afternoon seemed juxtaposed to the lack of movement; there were much fewer humans here than the larger city she was use to exploring, but those who noticed the troop of aliens didn't seem as perturbed by the sight of them. The leisurely pace of Beach City could perhaps instill a false sense of security, but knowing how deep into enemy territory they were, the sapphire made sure she knew all possible routes of escape, and the positions of her allies. 3JJ too knew to stay on her toes, eyes scanning and locking onto the movement of all possible enemies; but, for now, it seemed that only humans and other Earthling creatures were in view.
It didn't take a seasoned investigator to recognize the twinge of annoyance and frustration that tormented Padparadscha based on her tone, though perhaps this recognition stemmed from just how..close they and the peach Sapphire had grown. It was still quite a difficult concept for 7XB to come to terms with. In all honesty, they quite often feared that the rug was going to be pulled out from under them at any moment, leaving them with little more than scorn and regret to show for the whole endeavor. But at their core, they knew better than that; Padparadscha would never betray them in such a way.
Rebel gems or not, 7XB felt unusually comfortable in their ability to protect Padparadscha as they walked through the town unabashed, due in part, perhaps, to the additional quartz they brought along. Casting a glance back, it seemed as if 3JJ was keeping eyes on their surroundings as well, electing a nod from 7XB.
“So long as we avoid a conflict as best we can today, it should be no trouble to pass the information on to command.” They would fight if needed, but they would try to go a single recon mission without it.
