The quartz was hardly there enough to shy away from the peach Sapphire's touch; The heavy gem was practically shaking, quivering as she brushed a curtain of tangled hair from their face, the ivory tangle heavy with the weight of the sand and the tangy sea water that filled their rapidly flaring nostrils with it's aroma. Their large, armored fingers hook desperately into the sand of the shoreline, holding on for dear life even as the shimmering hardlight melts off of their hands and into the ether. 7XB’s stormy eyes were as large as saucers, glassy even as they lifted as best the gem could from their prone position to look at Padparadscha; It was almost as if they were looking through her, unable to focus on her in this unusual state.
“Fine, I..muh-I..” it was hard to be here, to fight against the very present torment that they found themselves pulled into. Suddenly they were there again, their mind pulling them back to where they feared the very most, a horror reawakened by the rebel agate and her terrakinesis.
They were all alone again, entombed in smothering darkness with the weight of an entireplanet crushing down on them as it had the others.
“Fine, im..I can hold it!” But they couldn't, they couldn't hold it! Would they have been the last if they had truly been strong enough? At the same time, 7XB knew where they really were, but the present seemed so distant. They were fighting. “I'm..here.”
Every word they uttered caused her shoulders to crank up higher in tension, the corners of her lips pulled down as her eyes darted over their expression,"You're here," She stated with all the conviction she could muster, placing a hand on their cheek,"I'm here, too," She laced her fingers through their hair, nervously brushing the sand out of it, and tried to understand what was happening to her trusted comrade. Their thousand-yard stare instilled her with the gut wrenching sensation that told her, while their last words were technically true, they weren't really fine, they weren't really here with her; they even seemed to be talking to someone else. Frustratingly, no matter how many times she searched, she couldn't see what was underneath, she wouldn't see what they saw. Her eyes flicked to their bare hands, clutching the sand in their fists, their whole body tense.
Padparadscha found herself too overwhelmed to care about the fact that 3JJ was in proximity; she would be hard pressed to let that gem's presence stand in the way of doing anything she could for 7XB while they were trapped in this mind-state. However, she felt hopelessly lost in the face of the unknown terror that had seized the quartz. One of her hands slipped down to tighly grip one of their's,"I'm with you," She couldn't take her eyes off of them, she simply hoped that 3JJ would take care of the remaining rebel.
Further up the beach, Onyx had managed to swing her legs to the side, and every fiber of her musculature tensed in anticipation of using 3JJ's grip against her. As the jasper rolled after her to keep her pinned down, Onyx's arm shot under her opponent's shoulders, and locked around her, "Here's some payback, you orange oaf!" With full confidence, she twisted 3JJ over and smacked her back into the ground in a puff of sand.
"Oof," The wind was knocked out of her, but it wasn't enough to subdue her-- though, that wasn't Onyx's intention. The rebel had gotten the advantage she needed, and attempted to disengage from the wrestling match in order to retreat.
Their thick mane was a heavy and tangled mess of sand and salt, reluctant to give way for the Sapphire gem's gentle fingers, though they weren't in much of a fit state to express any discomfort, were there any at all. It was not that they couldn't hear her words, they could, but it was as if she was far away, miles away instead of right before their eyes. She was here, on the warm beach, but where were they? Where exactly WAS here? Was it miles underground, struggling against such an immense pressure long after their muscles had cramped and strength should have faded away?
It had been so very long ago, thousands of years, and yet it felt so real, realer than the waves that lapped up around their waist, or realer than the voice of the sapphire who was trying to reach them.
“Wu-we c-can..if we..”
But 7XB had not entered this would-be tomb alone; No, they had gone there alongside their team, and the fate that awaited them found the Quartz left alone, carrying a horror great enough for them all. And then, so suddenly, there was a warmth, a growing heat upon the back of their hand threatening to thaw the state of delirium they had been so violently thrust into.
“You..you're..” Padparadscha, she was there, she was still right there in front of them, here in Beach City and not.. there. “Right.. right..” Steadily, they returned, though the quaking in their limbs had yet to cease. “I'm sorry, I..” they panted, eyes coming into focus upon her, finally, as best they could.
3JJ grunted, aiming to drive their knee into onyx's chest as she pulled away.
Stricken through by the terrifying thought that they might not come out of this state, the sapphire, washed out of her bright hue, tried her best to shove down her own feelings to be attentive enough to spot a solution when it would show itself; then something clicked, and a glimmer of life returned to their faded eyes. She wasn't sure if it was anything she'd done, but made her correlation, and both hands went to grip either side of theirs just in case that was what they had responded to. Even if it wasn't, it helped her to feel more secure-- they couldn't vanish in the mist if she had a solid grip on them, or so it felt.
She felt so twisted up, it were as if she'd gotten into a wrestling match herself. Padparadscha swallowed, her nerves were already a singed bundle as 7XB seemed to come to, looking at her instead of whatever far off thing had entranced them before. Their words seemed to be more for her now, but at any moment, the unknown assailant that had gripped 7XB could return, for all she knew. "7XB-- you-- it's okay," Padparadscha's shaken, breathy murmurs were addled as she held back tears of relief, giving a squeeze to their hand,"You and I should go further up the beach, to recover-- I have all the evidence I need from this zone," Whether it was true or not didn't matter at the moment, there were more important things to attend to. She needed to figure out what was going on, or at least, what she could do to help, and prevent it from happening again. Her eyes cast out over the water as she tried to think of ways to help them get from point A to B, then up the beach, away from town.
The unnatural speed of the onyx agate wouldn't be enough to help if her attention was divided; which it thoroughly was as her eyes cast toward the sapphire and the clear quartz, hunkered down in the liminal zone between land and sea. Her deeply furrowed brows weren't any matter to 3JJ, who'd landed her solid knee straight into the enemy's chest, knocking the wind out of her in turn. "Aagh!" She stumbled over,"Wait! S-stop," She pointed toward the beach in an attempt to distract the jasper,"I-I think your buddies are having some kind of issue,"
And then it seemed as though the world was coming back into focus, the swirling mists of the past retreating to the corners of their mind more and more. Or at least as best as it could, anyway. The memory of what had only just occurred was so fresh, so similar to what had happened long ago, that the tides of tragedy were into so easily, or so quickly, stemmed. But it was certainly a bit of a start, a glimmer of hope from within the abyss.
“P-Padparadscha,” they managed, finally, as their vision focused upon the peach gem, seeming almost entirely startled, “ya-you..look so..so pale.” Her delicate complexion was such a striking feature that the quartz, especially in their fearful, half-aware state, almost didn't recognize the concerned sapphire at first. She was speaking, that much the quartz could tell, but the sounds of the present were not yet easily deciphered; A dull, auditory roar lingering just beneath the noise-vacuum of where they had just found themselves. This fading silence left 7XB to their clarifying thoughts, turned now to the task of just why the sapphire looked so faint. Given any thought it was easy to tell: It was because of them, because they couldn't manage to keep it together again.
They had worked so hard, fought desperately against it, but in the end they'd failed again, just like..then. “I'm sorry..” they began almost frantically, “I'm so, sooo sorry.”
3JJ uses the kinetic momentum of their kick to bounce back to her feet. “Nice try, traitor!” They spat, back to the situation between the seasoned commander and her hopeful patron. Surely they could handle whatever it was.
Hearing her gem name wrapped a knot of different feelings into a bundle in her chest, culminating in the confused expression she wore. There could no longer be any doubt that 7XB knew she was here, but their alarmed reaction, as if she had just arrived, continued to fuel her fright. The fear dipped down deeper, circling something she had feared about them from the first time they'd admitted to forgetting the place they came from. Despite her discomfort, it always brought a rush of warmth to her cheeks to hear them call her by that name; and they had, after all, remembered it. The sapphire's lips pressed as she did everything she could to hold her emotions underneath, and examined the quartz in order to take her mind off of impractical fears.
As they began to apologize, her brows rose and came back together, her head shook from side to side as she continued to look them over for clues as to what was going on. She leaned closer to them as she spoke,"There's nothing to apologize for 7XB," She clutched their hand between both of hers with a tense grip, as if they were liable to float away at any second,"B-but I'm afraid-- if rebel reinforcements arrive--" if more crystal gems showed up, would they be able to fight? It almost piqued anger in her to think they might have to get into combat after something so unexplained and terrifying happened to them.
She glanced over her shoulder to spot 3JJ's back turned to them, facing the rebel, then she swiveled back to look at 7XB,"3JJ can handle things here, so--" she found it hard to explain what she really wanted to do at the moment; it was hard to decide how the hardened veteran might feel about being doted over while she tried to put together the pieces of what exactly had made this happen,"I-I th-- I think you're very hurt 7XB," as she spoke it became harder to keep choking back her tumultuous stream of emotions,"All I know right now is that we should find a safer place to be...are you able to stand?" If not, she had formulated a laundry list of over-thought plans to attempt to quickly extract them from this zone.
Onyx grimaced, her seemingly shallow attempt at a distraction quickly brushed off by the jasper; though, the rebel wondered if the loyalist's comrades really did need help, considering how locked up they seemed to be at the moment. But, she wasn't complaining; it would be much easier to escape this way. With the speed she'd displayed earlier, the rebel gem dove back and her form melted into a seeping darkness.
“Reinforcement?..” they echoed incredulously, an expression of utter disbelief dominating their face, obscured as it was by the muck of sand and earth. It was clear that, whilst they had that spark of recognition, they weren't exactly “No, no there's nobody else coming.” They shook their head, raining wet mounds of sand across the beach. Command wasn't going to send anyone to look for them, not here. Or, at least not in time to make any sort of a difference, anyway. It was dark, and cold, Padparadscha and her warm touch wavering before them and threatening consumption by the ether.
“We have to..we,” the clear gem swallowed dryly then, muscles flexing, coiling, as they hunched over more fully on their arms, elbows burrowing deeper in the white sand as they were made to bear a greater portion of the sturdy quartz gem’s weight, “we just huh-have to..hold until everything stabilizes..” Their fingers curl deeper into the Earth, all the way back into their palm with a handful of sand as tbe tide rolled back in.
“Then..we can get back to..the surface, right? No reason to..to panic.” Clearly they weren't going anywhere, at least not under their own agency, anyway.
3JJ blinked, surprised that Onyx had gone for such an obvious method of escape, but why wouldn't she? The rebel was not only a coward, but unoriginal! They stormed off after the fast-moving shadow, transitioning into a spin.
"What?" She answered, eyes widening. Padparadscha just looked back at them for a moment, unable to understand; they seemed so sure reinforcements wouldn't arrive, and of what surface did they speak? The sapphire wasn't able to follow, but looked away from them while she thought about what could be done. "7XB, we can't stay here," She said, with finality, as her eyes flicked back up to meet theirs. The last thing she wanted for either of them would be to end up a prisoner of the rebel forces; the damage to their turf wouldn't be overlooked, and neither would the Homeworlders if they lingered too long under the looming headquarters of the treasonous syndicate. But, the sapphire wondered if she should just trust what they had said; if they thought it was a good idea to hold this position, who was she to say they shouldn't?
She paused, eyes tracing the sand and water, and her lips fell open, but no sound left them quite yet. Her whole body shook with the very panic 7XB seemed to be speaking of, so she took a moment to try to center herself before speaking. "--But you're right, there's no need to panic. M-maybe, we can just focus on the situation right now," The tense knot in her chest seemed to get heavier, and her sense of dread wore on, but she continued to hold onto them. The sapphire tried to take in the words, and with it took a whiff of the salty air. For the moment, it was quiet-- she realized 3JJ and the Onyx were gone, and peeked over her shoulder. The beach was still; aside from the calling of gulls carried on the wind, the water lapping the shore, the far off din of Beach City. The sun warmed her skin, and the sky was a clear, cloudless azure. Everything, for the moment, was calm. The sapphire exhaled, and tried to absorb the clear quietness around her.
There weren't many realistic ways she could get them to another place without the help of a larger gem like 3JJ, and she didn't want to go against her trusted comrade's wishs. She would have to trust that 7XB knew there weren't more rebels coming, despite her undercurrent of distress about the possibility,"Right now everything seems okay," She leaned over to examine their gemstone; the translucent core seemed perfect as always, but she sensed something was still awry as her eyes trailed back up to theirs,"I was panicking, I'm-- I'm sorry. Not very becoming of me, is it? But we're okay," The sapphire gave a nervous laugh. She was sure 3JJ would return, that 7XB would too. For the time being, she just sat in the water and sand with the quartz, holding their hand, trying to calm down while the rest of the beach already seemed to be a step ahead of her, despite the carnage that had been left in the wake of the fight.
Onyx carried on, attempting to evade 3JJ, but became piqued with frustration as the jasper continued after her. She had looped around, taking 3JJ onto the hill behind the beach, and hoped the jasper would give up before she had to rest from using her shadow form so much.
So very much of what the little Sapphire was saying was going over the Quartz’s head in their current state, fading away into a dull, monotonous drone along with everything else that made up their actual surroundings as opposed to those they remembered. 7XB groaned, their forehead smacking against the sand with a wet 'thud’, the muscles of their neck had gone slack even as all the others coiled, twitching and straining as if under an immense and crushing weight. “We, if we..if we just..” There was nine of them, surely they could hold out until everything has settled down from the collapse.
“Nnyuhhh!” Their noise was one of pain, and strain, followed by a pant, though it was all but stifled by gentle wash of the waves, though it seemed to fade out on its own. The Earth, hated as it was by the clear quartz, did seem almost aware of their distress and..was sympathetic? The quiet symphony of wind and wave couldn't help but sooth their distressed mind, even as the sun warms their core, fighting away the phantasmal chill of underground as the light flickered off of their cut.
“We’re okay..” they heard and repeated, the words, finally, reaching them deeper. “Diamonds.. I'm okay.” They panted lightly, relaxing their clenched muscles.
3JJ’s temper was rising now, dashing as quickly as they possible could after the cowardly pool of darkness, pushing to jump ahead of her if possible.
She flinched as they landed face first into the sand, and her eyes continued to get wider as they expressed the pain they were in. The knot twisting in her amassed more weight, dragging her shoulders down; wasn't there a way she could be of use in what felt like such a dire situation? Completely in the dark, she had no idea how to help them, and what little clues she had were incoherent; she couldn't tell how lucid they were, and not even during the most difficult mission of her life did she see the powerful quartz like this. Her sense for truth had utterly failed her with this, which lead her to believe there was something going on inside of 7XB's mind. That revelation felt like it's own five ton weight being hooked onto the painful emotional knot. The sapphire had never liked wordless silence, but seeing this state 7XB had slipped into made it near unbearable to be without the nerve-soothing reassurance of comprehensible conversation, especially from them.
Just as her mental state began to tip downward, ready to nose dive back into something more erratic, she tried to refocus on what 7XB had already pointed out; panic wouldn't do either of them any good right now. It remained difficult for her to budge, she stayed with her eyes on her comrade. As hard as she tried to keep herself focused on the present moment, instead of whatever terrible future might await them, it was difficult to hold herself together for them. When the quartz echoed her words, her shoulder's straightened up.
"Y-you're okay?" She mumbled, looking dumbstruck as her eyes flicked over them, scraping together what clues she could about how true that statement was,"I-I mean, of course!" There was no possible way for her grip to get any tighter around their hand, but she gave a nervous chuckle,"We're okay, everything is fine!" She gave the best, pearly white smile she could right now, despite the confusion and and turmoil that wracked her from underneath. Her smile would strain at the corners of her lips with a bit too much teeth, eyes shaded dark as she successfully held back any rogue fluid from escaping, bedraggled outfit thoroughly ruined from the salty water and muddy sand lapping around them. Were they really okay? At this point, Padparadscha was convinced they weren't. She couldn't see what had hurt them, but she knew it was there now, whether they were lucid or not. As lost as she had been in trying to help them, approaching them about what just happened seemed a task all of its own. She gave a deep sigh, letting her expression fall neutral as she closed her eyes.
Onyx was fast-- but this jasper was determined. The rebel was determined as well; she needed to get to her allies and tell them about what had happened, that Homeworld knew about their base. Beach City was compromised, but for now she had to find a way to shake 3JJ. She cut down from the hill, heading straight into town in order to find a nice midday shadow to hide in, and to provide a more advantageous arena for her own abilities.
The ambient silence was allowed to linger for a handful of heartbeats. The wind, the waves, even the odd little avian creatures that soared overhead, cawing and complaining. It was almost soothing, peaceful. And then, alongside everything else, a less familiar sound. A laugh? Not a true laugh, mind you; No, it was more of a chuckle, an exhausted, heaving sound, what little mirth it could be said to hold all but invisible beneath the anguish it was trying to conceal. All this left it feeling, rightly so, rather hollow and ragged.
“You..heh.. you are a t-terrible liar, Padparadscha..” the Quartz gem’s words were just above faint, yet clearly intended playfully..or at least as close to playful as 7XB could manage. They could appreciate what the investigator was trying to do, even moreso as they became more and more lucid. “I am..okay. I'm okay now.” Diamonds, they would have been mortified if they were not so exhausted. With a groan, they would push themselves up onto their knees, now covered mostly in wet, coarse sand. The large gem felt..well, they felt far too much, much more than they would have preferred, in truth. It was as if an old wound had been reopened, raw and oozing. They might as well have weighted 10,000 pounds in these moments, sluggish and slow.
They wanted to say something witty, something to alleviate the look on her face. That look of fear, something they were sensitive to in this moment. But..what could they say? Nothing seemed appropriate after everything, so they just looked at her, their eyes hazy and dull.
Her eyes fluttered open once they began to speak. At first, their quiet words were as soothing as the sound of the waves and wind; her eyes glimmered as they looked at her. The clear quartz seemed more tangible now, but it was hard for her to let go, even as they began to push themselves up. She shimmied closer to them, releasing some of the tension that had built in her solid grip on their hand. Though, peace was still hard to grasp.
Shame washed over her as she tried to reason with herself about how she could've handled the situation better. Even now, after something like that, the gem she had connected with, been vulnerable with in so many new ways, they had to continue picking themselves up; pride for their strength welled in her core like a brimming fire, but the familiar sense of failure rose up from her shame, and she shrunk down, eyes cast away from them. She just knew there had to be something she could've done, but didn't. Thinking that something like this could happen again pressed her distress onward.
What she had just witnessed needed explanation, she wouldn't be able to go on with out it. However, she didn't want to push 7XB. For now, she just wanted to know they were with her. They were okay, but she knew better than to think the pain they showed her would simply vanish. As her eyes met theirs again, she could see the hurt lingering in them. The sapphire pulled herself to her feet, lip quivering, and managed to unclamp her grip from their hand. With a huff, she leaned in to put her arms around them. "Sorry, I should've just said the truth. I'm relieved you're okay-- but I'm afraid," She murmured her muffled words, trying to hide her face from them,"I didn't know what to do," The unknown dark of the future goaded her,"I still don't." It was difficult to say anything more, much less the truer meaning to her words.
The threat of rebel reinforcement arriving put them in a difficult spot, but she trusted 7XB to make the judgement call when it was necessary. Seeing the fatigue in their movements was reason enough for her to trust they knew what needed to be done for themselves and for the rest of this operation. Her impulse was to call her medics in, but her retinue were scattered around the moonbase and the plant Earth.
The sight of Padparadscha, just as waterlogged and bedraggled as themselves, reminded the quartz of yet another dangerous mission, albeit one much more recent than previous. Even through their muddy, dangerous trek through the humid jungles of Earth the clear quartz couldn't remember the peach-kissed gem look quite so miserable and downtrodden. As painful and bewildering as it was to see, 7XB would be lying if they pretended not to know exactly what had caused her to feel this way. As much as the Quartz would have preferred to ignore what had just happened, to retreat back into their shell and lock that rawness away again. But after everything that had just occurred, they would be doing Padparadscha and themselves a disservice.
As much as they would like to pretend that it would never happen again, the Quartz would've never imagined it happening in the first place. Had it really been so many years since it at happened? Just thinking about it made their stomach turn, not to mention the knowledge that they would have to give an account of themselves.
They wrapped an arm around the small sapphire gem as she curled against them, her lip trembling as erratically as her small form was against their chest. “It's alright, Padparadscha,” they eased gently, squeezing gently, “let's..let's get out of here. 3JJ knows how to get to the warp. She'll find us there.” Surely the Jasper didn't expect them to wait here.
There was nothing quite as revitalizing as being close to 7XB. A rush of exhilarating warmth enveloped her as they returned her hug and continued to speak. Her midriff fluttering, the knot in her chest began to unfurl. The sapphire gave a breathy sigh, enjoying the comfort of the embrace, and hearing their gentle words. It had been a long time since she'd been able to put her arms around this gem, and she didn't know when she'd be able to again. Along with the terrifying knowledge that this warrior was constantly in danger from outside forces, she now suspected there was some internal danger lurking within them, something that could bring the seemingly everlasting energy of the quartz to a grinding halt in the wrong situation.
As they made the call to move out, she was caught off guard-- not exactly by their wish to get back to the warp, as she too knew it would be better to not linger in front of the rebel base. Rather, it was their conspicuous offer of talk that had thrown her through a loop, causing her brows to float upward.
Back in Empire City, they'd promised to talk to her when they were ready to. Was this what they'd been holding back from her the whole time-- and were they really ready now, or was it circumstance pushing them? Was she ready, especially after realizing there was something that affected them so deeply? Nonetheless it was something she found of great importance to know if she were going to be working on a team with this gem; if they were to be incapacitated in such a manner again, she needed to know how to effectively defend against it and reverse it's affects.
Despite the reservations she had, perhaps now was the best time possible to get to the bottom of this. "If-- if you're ready, then I am too," She looked up at them with a hardened expression, bracing herself for this talk, and gave a nod.
Rising with sudden, almost grim, purpose, the Quartz was sure to keep the quivering Sapphire close, adjusting their grip upon the valuable aristocrat.as to make her more comfortable. Their legs threatened, initially, to give out beneath their sheer bulk, as if foreign to them, but determination won out in the end, and their strength returned. Still, those first few, lumbering steps were stiff and shaky at best, what had previously been wet sand, baked dry by the heat they radiated, raining down upon the beach as they moved. This was not something 7XB wanted to do, silent as their steps carried them as quickly as possible through the town, eager to put it as far behind them as possible- If they had learned one thing during their excursion in Empire City, it was that after an incident like that, it wasn't a good idea to stick around.
This location was much more sparsely populated than where they had been previously, of course, but they imagined that may actually draw more attention to the commotion. At long last the hill came into sight, the warp pad nestled upon the top like a crown. The ground grew steeper beneath their feet, carrying them ever closer to their destination. 7XB seemed.. occupied, constantly teetering upon the verge of saying something but rendered somehow unable.
They felt so humiliated, that feeling mixing with what remained of that primal fear into a deadly and unpleasant cocktail. They, too, were reminded of that conversation back in Empire City, and it seemed as though fate had conspired to push them to open before they truly felt ready; But it was too late to worry about that now.

This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
All gems on earth are still stranded, the communication hub is still offline and all the space warps are shattered, it has now been revealed that this is the work of Rose Quartz and her small group known as the Crystal gems. They have rebelled against Homeworld and have chosen to protect the Earth (Trapping themselves on Homeworld to keep the warps down).
Now both sides are fighting among themselves along with fighting against the 'Corruption' a virus is infecting many gems turning most of them into mindless monsters, but those with a stronger will seem to becoming something more sinister.
The Game has changed now. The question has finally been posed, are you against Homeworld or allied with them. Or do you have your own agenda that may or may not been assisted by the ‘Corruption’. Regardless the seeds have been placed down and although it is only the beginning the fight for or against Earth and the corruption has begun. The choice is yours for how it is shaped on the Original Steven Universe Roleplay Site.
Orginal Opening Plot Here Thread That Changed Everything
Differances Between the Roleplay and the Show
*Thanks to Rose Quartz' message the Gems on Earth are entirely aware that the Homeworld Gems intend to wipe out the human race.
*The "corruption"'s Origin is still unknown, some suspect it was a viral infection, other claim it was a Diamond experiment gone awry and other suspect the organics were behind it. Regardless no one seem to have a proper answer about what it was and why its only isolated to Earth
*Garnet, Pearl and Rose are assumed capture on Homeworld
*Garnet,Pearl and Rose broke the space warps to delay Homeworld
*Thanks to Roses Message gems now know what the Kindergarten was used for
