The smoke billowed out of the dark brown valleys of the kindergarten. The walls were lined with the holes that sometimes seemed to resemble yawning mouths, hungry to suck more life out of the already dead zone. This wasn't a happy place, yet at the same time it was a place of birth. The fact that life came from such a place of death only made it more disturbing to the little gem. Flurry had been tasked with checking on the kindergarten, to make sure that they weren't about to find several more quartzes being grown there. She kept a little sack with her, and picked up interesting rocks, something to keep her mind off of how scared she was.
She came around a corner and hurt grunting noises, it was definitely a corruption. She couldn't see in the fog but it was some sort of slithering thing, appeared to be trapped under a boulder. This was enough to cause the spinel to start jogging the other direction. As she ran through the valleys of the kindergarten a horrifying thought came to her mind. She realized the paths all looked the same, even moreso with the thick blanket of fog. She was lost. Now, the fear of being alone in the event the corruption escaped was enough to make her try something stupid. Maybe more crystal gems were here, maybe someone else had been given the same task? She needed help.
"Hello?" She called, cupping her hands. "Please! Somebody help me!"
The dead zones near the kindergarten always creep Dumortierite out whenever she tracks a gem signature to it. She'll freely admit that the reality of how a kindergarten works definitely gave her pause whenever she allowed her mind to dwell upon it. Today seemed to be a foggy one as well, so her sight was that much less reliable than it was usually.
She had been keeping a metaphorical eye on the place in search of the Crystal Gems, as per her current sub-orders. That agate that had found out about her deployment had insisted that she keep herself near this area as the rebel forces were supposedly reported to occasionally patrol this area. Dumortierite had certainly noticed some things patrolling this area, but they weren't Rebels.
... well, it's not like she could tell even if they were originally rebels, corrupted gems seemed to hold no allegiances to the Rebels or Diamonds as far as Dumo could tell. She often found herself morbidly curious of them-
Her musings were interrupted by a new scent letting her know that there was someone else here. She allowed a smile to grow on her face, maybe she could actually get something done. She crawled out of the hole she had been hiding in and along the wall towards the new scent, in the meantime passing by a struggling corruption that seemed to be stuck beneath one of the many boulders in the area... she mentally reminded herself to be careful, the kindergarten's structural integrity was questionable at best and she would do well not to climb onto a loose rock and start a rock slide or some other similar event.
As she neared her potential target she was able to make out their call for help and sped up, thinking that they might be under attack. She ended up close to the ground on a wall rather close to them, though she was unable to make out their actual appearance due to the fog she could smell that they were at least a member of the Spinel Group of gemstones, though from this distance it was still a little difficult to to tell if they were just a lookalike gem.
"Hello?" She called from the wall. "Are you in danger? If you can, please come towards the sound of my voice."
Flurry stood in the open valley for a moment, as wisps of fog circled her like ghosts. She put her hands together in front of them, squeezing each other to relieve stress. Her knees buckled as she looked about, her pigtails bobbing. In only a few seconds, she heard the call of another voice. It wasn't some corruption or an angry shout, it seemed to be someone trying to help. What good luck! It was one of the crystal gems already. She took a moment to find out what direction the voice was coming from and picked her way there as well as she could. She found that as she neared the spot she had to circle about a few valleys. It was like a maze, she knew where she wanted to go, but not how to get there. However, in a short while she found herself turning a corner, coming only a few feet from a towering quartz soldier.
Flurry's jaw dropped as she saw the staring eyes, the long arms, occasional splotches of dirt, and most importantly, the blue diamond jumpsuit. Her jaw quavered at the sight as she staggered back.
"Oh my gosh..." She tried to compose herself. "Hey! S-stand back!"
Dumortierite found herself letting out a sigh of relief when the little gem got close enough for her to see them. A tiny little thing that must have gotten lost here after an attack or something, though the gems reaction to her gave her a bit of a start. Why in the world were they suddenly backing away...?
Her eyes landed on the star insignia that was so central to her new acquaintances appearance modifier. She let out a little "Oh." of realization before her thoughts caught up to her and she smiled broadly. She might actually owe that Agate who sent her here an apology, at least a self-admitted one, Dumortierite hadn't expected the intelligence saying there were crystal gems out here to be even KIND OF right.
Her grin intensified as she made her way to the ground and stood on the floor. She flipped the majority of her hair off her face slowly and held out her other hand in a taunting offering to the lost White Spinel. "What's the matter Spinel? You look like you've seen one of the Corrupted. Come here, I'll get you out of this dusty old Kindergarten."

"Don't come any closer..." Flurry's eyes narrowed. She reached to the barrette-like gem in her hair, and pulled a tiny mallet from inside. "I've got a weapon and I don't know how to use it!"
She puffed up her cheeks, trying to seem a bit more intimidating, but it of course had the opposite effect. She tried to get a good look at the other valley-paths of the kindergarten, to gauge which seemed to be the most effective in the likely event she needed to escape. This was definitely better than being attacked by a corruption, but not by much. What did this quartz want to do to her? Shatter her? Abduct her? Harvest her? She couldn't have that, even if she wasn't that helpful to her friends.
"What do you want anyway? I'm sure we can talk this out!" She said, still trying to talk in an intimidating tone.
Dumo pulled back a little when the gem announced that she had a weapon but was visibly relieved when it was a tiny little hammer. As she began to walk slowly towards the marginally lighter-colored gem she made the decision to not sugarcoat what she was here for, White Spinel had asked so nicely after all.
"I'm here to "Fetch" one of the Crystal Gems." She explained as she approached, her hands held slightly up in a mockery of the usual 'placating' manner someone might use when approaching an angry wild animal. She dulled down her smile a bit as she thought a little about the situation a split second more... She could play an angle like that probably, a nice excuse to keep hunting even after she had caught someone.
"It doesn't have to be you though, maybe?" She stifled a little giggle of excitement, Diamonds above, she loves her job. "Come here, and I'll let you go as soon as you show me another Crystal Gem to chase..."
Flurry's eyes widened in fright. Before her safety had been in question, now it as her ideals, she was being asked to let down the very people who she had accepted and had accepted her in turn. She felt a bit of bravery in her as she stepped back again. She tilted her body at a bit of an angle to seem more sure of herself, and pointed out a finger. "No! The Crystal Gems are my friends, and I would never let them down! No matter what!"
She hopped into the air and a little cloud appeared under her, it somehow supported her body. This was her ability: to make clouds that she could touch and ferry people about in the air. In this situation: it served to make herself seem slightly taller and more intimidating, and secretly as an escape plan.
"You can't take any of us, we're here to protect earth, because that's what we care about!"
Dumortierite put her hands behind her back and drew out her gauntlet on each arm. She'll admit that while the response she had gotten was the one she expected it wasn't one she had hoped for. She at least had to give the Spinel a little more respect than she had thought she deserved, a traitor is traitor but at least she's loyal to the side she defected to. She decided to poke a little bit more at the gem to see what she could get out of her.
"Explain it to me then," Dumo started as she began to walk towards Flurry with her guard up. She arms held close to her body so she could protect it from whatever surprises the Crystal Gem in front of her might pull out of her pocket... though she had to admit she kid of digged the floating thing they were pulling off.
She suddenly jumped at the little gem with the intent of trying to grab onto her. Whether she was successful or not she would continue her question. "Why do you care about this dirty blue rock?"
Flurry was glad she had been ready, those long arms were surprisingly fast! She swerved aside with her cloud, nearly falling off in the process. She came to a short cliff face on the side of the valleys and stepped off onto it. She couldn't fly upward on her cloud, and so she had to physically gain altitude in order to stay out of the gem's reach. She leaped up and then re-created the cloud, dispersing the last one. This put her about 5 feet off the ground, a small advantage, but one she needed if she had any hope of avoiding another of those swipes.
"Homeworld is a place where you get told to hurt people and fight, even when they didn't do anything wrong! This planet has a bunch of super great people and gems, and they just want to be themselves! Homeworld wants to take all of that away, and make us fight." Flurry leaned forward on her cloud. "I don't want anybody to get hurt, and I need to stand up for what I believe in!"
Her face calmed a bit. "What about you...why are you with homeworld? Hurting people must be really hard..."
The hunter gem rushed after Flurry as she tried to escape, she quickly crawled up the outcropping and tried to swipe again at her as she got just far enough from her that even her prodigious reach could only miss. She scoffed unhappily as the little gem darted out of her grasp. She needed to think a bit more to get her hands on this one than she would normally need to. She stayed attached to the wall as close as she could be to the offending little scoundrel.
"I've never seen anything like that... are you sure we're talking about the same Homeworld? I've never met a quartz that wasn't as enthusiastic as the last one to fight." She said unhappily. This Star-marked gem must me lying to her or something, combat gems were always more than happy to march onto the field of battle... some a bit more than she wanted to address. Honestly some of those Quartzes were more enthusiastic than even her.
She had to think for a moment to figure out why she was with Homeworld. "Hmm... I serve Homeworld because they gave me my purpose, one that I personally love. Fetching things is my passion, granted most of the time I don't need to fetch people... and fetching an unwilling Gem is a uniquely new experience to me."
Flurry frowned as she hovered on her cloud. She stopped moving, her guard let down as she considered what the quartz had told her. She was interested to hear the gem specific idea, rather than her rantings about what quartzes were supposed to be like. It was unique to her for gems to enjoy fighting, but then again, if it was the case, was she wrong? If a gem wanted to do what they were made to do, was she just to let that run it's course? That couldn't be the answer, not after what she'd seen. She did realize that this quartz probably was referring to others, not herself.
"Even if you're made to do something, hurting other gems....it's never gonna feel good deep down. When you do it, you'll be feeling bad about it for a real long time. Like, I've hurt some other gems...not like, in a fight, and I never forgave myself." She looked down at the ground. "Does this job...really feel right to you?"
Dumortierite scowled at the question, her eyebrow twisting upwards almost painfully high as the other one crushed downwards on the opposite eye. She had fought gems before on a number of missions, she remembered the faces they made when they were poofed by herself or others... she had been forced, by this little twerp, to realize her true emotions regarding the matter: I'm so glad that isn't me.
She could feel her temper encroaching on her rational headspace as she began an internal debate with herself. The purity grace and infallibility of the Diamonds AND her own comfort and love of her role and the feeling of belonging she derives from it VS. whether she feels OK separating a Gem from a place where she feels she belongs.
She totally stopped moving besides tracking the smaller Gem with her head, the internal debate forcing her hand onto her own head as a form of physically anchoring herself to the real world as she groaned in frustration. She shook her head angrily to get the thoughts to the back of her head. "It... Grrr... I won't lie to you and say something like 'It doesn't matter what I think is right' like some meathead, but I'm not proud of how attractive that option looks right now..."
She thought about saying something like 'It's what the diamonds made me for' but that one would fall flat too, her gem was a fighter second and a tracker first.
Flurry smiled, getting the idea that she had made some sort of impression. She rubbed her cheek with her fingers as she tried to think of something to say to diffuse the tension. She sat down on the cloud and crossed her legs, relaxed now. "I used to work for homeworld, same as you, and I was just a support gem. My job was to help out when the quartz soldiers did raids, to move supplies and to heal the tired ones, but I couldn't stand watching what I was indirectly causing. It's really bad when you find yourself doing something bad, but everyone says it's a good idea."
She tilted her head a bit. "The only way to be happy, is to be true to yourself, even if it's hard. I'm not gonna say that people who work with the diamonds are scaredy cats...it is really scary, and dangerous to be a rebel." She looked right into the quartzes' eyes. "But if you keep lying to yourself, you wont even believe the things you think about yourself."
The big blue gem shook her head unhappily before her eyes caught on the other gems, the Spinels expression had lightened up and she was able to see that they really meant what they said. She was right, Dumortierite was absolutely terrified of what might happen if she decided to go rogue... but she didn't really need to do anything like that did she? It's not like she couldn't just give an incorrect report here or there, make it look like she hadn't ever met this White Spinel. She found herself accepting that, at east as long as this White Spinel was the target, she didn't agree with this particular mission.
She wouldn't be abandoning Homeworld though, not just with this. She breathed in slowly, letting all the scents in the area mix and intermingle before letting out a slow sigh to send all the air back out and clam herself down... "You're right, I'm not comfortable with this mission but I'm too scared to confront my superiors on it. I've failed before, tracking things down that just couldn't be found... but I'm not just another meathead. I know that reporting a failure to do something in the war effort will get me shattered in less time than it takes me to complete the report in the first place."
Dumortierite sat down on the outcropping she was on, crossing her legs to mimic the smaller gem. "... I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do in this situation." She let out a short bark of laughter "Regulations definitely don't cover this." She sighed happily. She had learned something new today: why the Crystal Gems had to fight. The Diamonds had simply made them as the wrong gems, and she surely couldn't blame them for a mistake her rulers had made just like she couldn't blame the Agates for the uselessness they were. She had realized that the Diamonds were to blame.
Flurry's cloud descended until it touched the ground, and then faded away, leaving Flurry standing on her feet again. She folded her hands in her lap. "I think it's great that you're honest about it though, I think it's super brave to change your mind about something like this, even if it's just kinda...leaving a part out of your report." She looked at the quartz hesitantly and then leaned forward, putting out a hand awkwardly. In doing so she had to really lean forward, as the quartz was sitting down and her own body wasn't really long enough to get her arm out there. "Um, I'm White Spinel, but everybody calls me Flurry, and you can too."
She smiled, trying to look friendly, despite being obviously a little uneasy still, after all she had been almost abducted just a moment ago after all. "What's your name? Even if we don't agree...I'm sure we can be friends!"

This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
All gems on earth are still stranded, the communication hub is still offline and all the space warps are shattered, it has now been revealed that this is the work of Rose Quartz and her small group known as the Crystal gems. They have rebelled against Homeworld and have chosen to protect the Earth (Trapping themselves on Homeworld to keep the warps down).
Now both sides are fighting among themselves along with fighting against the 'Corruption' a virus is infecting many gems turning most of them into mindless monsters, but those with a stronger will seem to becoming something more sinister.
The Game has changed now. The question has finally been posed, are you against Homeworld or allied with them. Or do you have your own agenda that may or may not been assisted by the ‘Corruption’. Regardless the seeds have been placed down and although it is only the beginning the fight for or against Earth and the corruption has begun. The choice is yours for how it is shaped on the Original Steven Universe Roleplay Site.
