Sulfur grit his teeth as he saw his cohort's situation.
"Variscite! Don't be a fool!"
He summoned his ten blades, using five of them to rotate around himself. Some of the shrimp lunged at him but were deflected by the blades. No, the blades did not wound them. He would need to try harder if he hoped to penetrate their carapace. He instead pulled a blanket from his gem and fastened it around two swords. The blanket swept over Variscite scooping up a few shrimp which quickly tore through it. He sent his remaining three swords into a shrimp, the direct impact crushed it, but the shrimp were inching toward them all around.
"There are too many of them, we need to get out of here!" His swirling blades blocked three more lunges. Right then, even among the noises of the gems fighting they heard a wail. It was a familiar noise, and not one they wanted to hear now. The reaper, an extremely dangerous corruption, was nearby. "Out of the frying pan and into the fire! If we climb to the top we'll have to deal with that monster, if we stay in here we'll need to deal with the shrimp!"
Variscite thought about the situation, actually preferring the reaper over the shrimp for a second because her weapons were based on slashing and piercing more than bludgeoning. At least the reaper was more predictable, but this was a comical thought. The reaper was by far the most dangerous corruption Variscite had encountered. She and Sulfur working together could not defeat the beast before. Variscite's gem weapons were too dull back then; they could not even harm the monster's hide. Now she was stronger, her sharp weapons crushed and tore at the sturdy shrimp; she could likely harm the reaper now. Even so could the two gems win?
"Let's crush the shrimp here first. Assuming no more come we may be able to beat them. If we end up too hurt, we can flee from the reaper. If not, we should do our best to shatter it here and now." Variscite's words in her last sentence were meant to sound confident, but her uncertainty showed.
Sulfur laughed at her decision, lulling back his head and causing his hair to bounce. He eyed her with a grimace as he blocked some more of the shrimp.
"We'd be lucky to escape the Reaper at full power! If we lose this fight there's no running." He said, stabbing another shrimp. He reached into his gem to pull out...a plastic sack of lettuce. He had intended to use that in his cooking, but that was not what he was reaching for! Sulfur's swords saved him from some more attacks but then one of the shrimp latched onto his back. He cried out in pain as three more charged his legs and toppled him to the floor. He desperately tried to summon his swords, tossing the lettuce aside. Before he could even try he noticed something odd. The shrimp were sliding toward the lettuce? They tore open the bag and started to eat! All of the shrimp started to slowly approach the lettuce.
"Extraordinary..." His eyes widened as he stood. The wail came again, closer now. "It's gotten into the spire...run!"
Variscite darted down the stairs of the spire, the only place she figured she could go. Maybe if they somehow could get it further in and then reach the top again from a different way, they could elude the reaper by tricking it into going further into the spire. Facing it out by the warp pad would be suicidal as the massive, flying corruption was fast. It would probably shatter them if it was given the open air, its advantageous terrain.
The rushing gem passed by several doors, lept over some broken pieces of the structure, and continued to a place she knew. Variscite had found a large room with two staircases that curled along the walls. The stair cases were on opposite sides and went upward at opposite directions almost forming a double helix, but were to far apart from each other. Not only was this a place they could best prepare to fight the monster, but that item, the only remains of her past, was nearby.
Sulfur followed as they got deeper in. As she would run or swing around with her grappling hooks while needed, Sulfur would simply glide. It was times like these where his levitation ability was useful. The wailing didn't stop. That thing was taking the bait. As Sulfur reached the room she was in, he smiled. Maybe they would take out his menace once and for all? It's ugly head appeared, looking like the skull of a raven. This gem, as they had identified it, was a corrupted obsidian, giving it the inky black colors it had. It was more than a corruption, it was flying death. Now in it's hound form the reaper could squeeze into the room they were in. Sulfur stood still as it charged him, and plucked something from his gem.
In a flash, smoke covered both of them. He had a smoke bomb in his gem!? A dull slicing sound could be heard, as well as another wail. Several of Sulfur's swords rotated in a saw pattern. Sulfur landed on the other side of the smoke cloud. As the view of the monster was restored, a huge gash in it's back was visible. Sulfur looked at his ally with a tense stare.
Variscite was rummaging through many possible locations of the fragment. At length, she found it, buried in a corner of a small room. She remembered crying in this corner, feeling complete emptiness as she had comprehended she would never see her friends again. She had felt she would die of sorrow. Everything was just as she remembered it, even a small hole in the wall where she had let out some anger. The nostalgic renegade picked up the item and stored it in her gem.
Just then Sulfur shouted. Variscite came dashing out of the room and realized he had made an actual opening in the reaper. Variscite sprinted forward. She slashed directly at the wound to widen it. If her grapples managed to stick in the corruptions injury, Variscite would pull to in an effort to widen the hole in this monster's form. The female gem prepared to dodge if the creature attacked her.
It was working! The creature wailed again and what appeared to be it's ribcage flailed out weakly at Variscite. Sulfur watched, getting his swords reassembled. Were they actually going to do it? This quickly would they eliminate his nemesis? No. This creature was much smarter than it seemed to be. Variscite was carving deeper into it, toward it's gems, but it was setting a trap. Perhaps it wanted to finish them as much as they wanted to finish it. It's weak attacks were only coverups, it's wing-like appendeges emerged from it's back while it kept Variscite busy, and it it made an effort to stab at her. Sulfur used his swords to block the wings, glad to be paying attention.
The Reaper, now with it's plot foiled darted backward and used it's wings to shield it's wound. However, it had done so quickly enough to buy it time to make a move. One wing lifted to free a volley of it's black shards. Sulfur's swords were still over by Varis. Sulfur got his hand swords ready to block. He smiled.
"Hey Varis...Im glad you could find your coffee cup."
The shards pierced Sulfur all at once making his body shudder from impact. In a burst he poofed, his gem clattering on the floor. The reaper eyed the gem, but it also eyed Varis. This thing was very smart, it wasn't about to be greedy and leave it's weak spot open.
A surge of emotions overwhelmed Variscite as Sulfur's gem clattered to the ground. He protected me? To his advantage over the creature of course. But what is this tear in my heart? I hardly cared for Sulfur, saw him only as a path toward power. But this feeling... it't the same way I felt when I watched helplessly as Chalcedony shattered Peridot, when he shattered the rubies... my friends. I was too weak back then.... but now... I am stronger! I WON'T FAIL!!!
Everything Variscite saw appeared red, like she was looking through stained glass windows. She sprinted forward, full of savage rage. The frantic gem extended her grappling hooks a good fifteen feet, and started to swing them rapidly. She preformed various combos: slashing sideways, up and down, fully extending her weapons thirty feat, coiling her grapples into spiraling drills with her chains, whipping, piercing, raking... as she dodged the reaper's wing projectiles and stabs. She lurched from side to side and hopped, while the reaper careened into walls and tried chopper her to pieces with its wings one on top of the other like scissors. She send off apparent chunks of the reaper's "body." The monster howled and screeched in agony. Variscite gave a wide, sickening grin of pleasure. Then, to her dismay, the wound in its torso began to heal. The battered body and wings were also healing.
..... "no"..... Came Variscite's weak reply.
The abomination made sounds that were difficult to comprehend; they sounded like a sort of cruel mockery. Variscite had no other choice. She made a dash for Sulfur while the corruption healed and then ran for the staircase, which still existed despite the wrecked room. She took the steps four at a time. The sprinter was so low to the ground one would think her momentum should force her to fall. Variscite did not trip, but lept to the side as the reaper crawled and flew after her, changing shape back and forth in a grotesque manner and crawling on the walls. She ran on the stairs, walls, or even ceiling with her grapples as support, Sulfur's gem in her pocket. She burst out on to the roof of the spire and lunged towards the warp pad, the reaper's appendages reach out to envelope her as she dematerialized.
Back on the shores of the beach, Variscite held Sulfur's gem and waited for him to reappear.
In about half an hour Sulfur reformed. His shirt no longer read 'why hello there' as it had earlier that day. In the beach breeze his hair blew. He closed his eyes, and seemed to be enjoying the breeze. For a long while he sat there, cross legged, enjoying the wind. He eventually turned toward Variscite with a relieved smile. Perhaps he was happy to have been saved from shattering at the hands of that corruption, or just happy to be in one piece.
"Oh Variscite I have much to thank you for. What I saw as an off-chance brooding errand has become a profound moment." He stood and looked her in the eyes, grinning. "You did it, you shattered the Reaper!"
Variscite was relieved to see Sulfur, then heard his last comment.
"Ah... well...no...I didn't actually shatter the reaper." Variscite said reluctantly and disappointingly. She was alarmed that the former Count had expected her to finish off that horror single handedly. Is he joking?
"I must have have struck it over a hundred times, but it regenerated when I tore it up, healing faster than I could hurt it. I only managed to charge out of the place with you a fraction of a second before death."
She stood there, reflection on everything that had happened. Variscite was relieved that she had her coffee cup piece now. She pulled it from her gem and held it, examining the letter "J" painted on the black fragment. J... the first letter in "Jasper."
"Oh...." He sighed and let his shoulders roll back. He didn't want to talk too defeatist after their victory, but the gem had become superstitious. That thing was stronger than any corruption should be, and it was coming for him. Why? Perhaps because he had sinned. His divine judgement was coming in the form of a demon. He had to pay for his crimes, for the gems he'd shattered. It was too late to repent. If he was right, they wouldn't be able to destroy the reaper, no matter what. He would live running, or be broken by it directly. "I noticed back on the island. You've improved since we last met. I gave you an opening because I assumed we'd be able to finish it here, but it was baiting us. Still I regret nothing, it's rare to have someone you can trust."
Sulfur paused to let Variscite have her moment. "How do you feel? I can tell it's a painful memory."
Variscite held the fragment in her hands as her slender fingers traced it. "I was born on Earth, just six years ago. I came out too late, and the other Variscite's and Quartz soldiers were already at work. I was first captured by humans. A human doctor was testing the durability of gems, and I was his favorite toy. My gem was fairly undeveloped and my cut sloppy. How could I have been of much use coming out late. But I think he strengthened my gem unintentionally through the torment. I broke free and killed him.
Later I joined a mismatched group of gems under authority of Homeworld to shatter corruptions. The 'J' on the cup is the first letter of Jasper, because the leader of the group was a Jasper who gave this cup to me as a gift since I made good coffee. She had her name inscribed herself so I would never forget her. There were three others as well and we went on missions together for a year.
Unfortunately Chalcedony, a very powerful soldier attacked us. He claimed to be a Crystal Gem and had her soldiers stay back while he defeated all five of us himself. The gem shattered the peridot in front of my very eyes, saying she was gone because I was too weak to stop him. He did the same with the two rubies later on to mess with my head, making me choose between them. Perhaps he would have shattered them both anyway if I had agreed on only one. He tortured me in other ways, simply for pleasure. Eventually, I managed to break out and cracked his gem, leaving him to die.
After that I roamed the world, shattering corruptions when they appeared to get stronger. I found this place and buried my memories there, but I realize even if it's just a memory, it is part of me. I should hold onto it...."
Variscite put the shard back in her gem and wondered why she had said all this. She had never told this story to anyone or narrated it out loud. She had just told Sulfur.
Sulfur rubbed his chin. He wasn't fazed by such a story, as he clearly had gone through a lot. He levitated a little as he laid back in the air, just watching the clouds sleepily drift over them. He didn't turn to speak, confident that the late night winds wouldn't disrupt his voice. He waited a bit to speak, preparing to get all of his thoughts set before he started.
"I'm not quite sure I told you my own story. It's...much less innocent I should say." He shrugged. "I used to be known for my ability to talk well, and I was a negotiator and strategist among Blue Diamond's court. I was unusual, because as a unique gem I had no purpose, and I was only used because I suited my role well. Soon however, I was replaced by a Sapphire. Sapphires can see the future, and when production of Sapphires increased I was replaced in the blink of an eye. A gem named Emerald said she would protect me and took me on her starship to earth, having me fight off her enemies. Of course, she had that planned from the beginning. Emerald made me an off color, tweaking my form to make me more suited for combat, even after the other Sulfur's were harvested. She set me up to fail and I live now without a purpose..."
He landed on his feet and looked over at her.
"It's more annoying than sad. Imagine trying to find out what you should do when society hasn't labeled you at all. I don't want to be weak like the crystal gems, but I want to belong. We all want to belong."
Variscite considered Sulfur's story. It seemed tragic to her. She had been horrifically traumatized by foes, but she already knew they were evil. She had never so fully been betrayed by an ally, a friend. She could hardly imagine what that must be like. The interested gem tried to imagine Howlite backstabbing her and shuddered. Then again, she had often assumed that she would simply be betrayed and saw a certain innocence in not expecting betrayal from a close friend. It must hurt more to be betrayed, believing that someone could never hurt you. An off color, was that what she was too now. Variscite had been severely tweaked, by both the doctor and Chalcedony. Variscites were meant to be only stealthy infiltrators with the ability to fight a bit if caught. Variscite was now a powerful gem warrior.
"I see... I can only try to imagine what you went through, as mine was a different pain. But I can relate to being without purpose, that is why I have to hope the Crystal Gems hold some sort of promise."
"You might be right. We can meet at the Beta Kindergarten before we leave. I'm sure you'll want time to spend with your new artifact." He said with a shrug. As he started to leave he didn't look back at her. He was glad to have survived his encounter with the Reaper, and likely wouldn't have made it without help. One hopeful thought kept ringing in his ears. He considered that the only way to defeat the Reaper, would not be to outsmart it, but to out-brute it. The only way one could be strong as the reaper is when fused. Fusion was the one spot where Sulfur's philosophy of self-distance didn't work. The closer the bond between two gems, the easier it was for them to fuse. Sulfur made an effort not to get close to anyone, he wouldn't be able to fuse. Again he was reminded, the Reaper was his judgement. Maybe his lack of care for his cohorts was another of his sins that he was to be judged for. Perhaps if he cared for his allies enough he'd sacrifice himself to the monster, at least that way he'd be the only one to pay.
This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
All gems on earth are still stranded, the communication hub is still offline and all the space warps are shattered, it has now been revealed that this is the work of Rose Quartz and her small group known as the Crystal gems. They have rebelled against Homeworld and have chosen to protect the Earth (Trapping themselves on Homeworld to keep the warps down).
Now both sides are fighting among themselves along with fighting against the 'Corruption' a virus is infecting many gems turning most of them into mindless monsters, but those with a stronger will seem to becoming something more sinister.
The Game has changed now. The question has finally been posed, are you against Homeworld or allied with them. Or do you have your own agenda that may or may not been assisted by the ‘Corruption’. Regardless the seeds have been placed down and although it is only the beginning the fight for or against Earth and the corruption has begun. The choice is yours for how it is shaped on the Original Steven Universe Roleplay Site.

*Garnet, Pearl and Rose are assumed capture on Homeworld
*Garnet,Pearl and Rose broke the space warps to delay Homeworld
*Thanks to Roses Message gems now know what the Kindergarten was used for
