Name: Vanadinite
Appeared Age: Adult
Gemstone: Vanadinite
Gemstone Location: Throat
Faction: Crystal Gem
Corrupted: No
Appearance: Long white strands of hair reach all the way down the back of her tall and slender figure. Complimented by her glowing red eyes, it gives her figure an appearance similar to albino creatures. Five-pointed stars decorate the crown of her head, representing her loyalty to the cause of the Crystal Gems. Her vibrant gemstone is cut to the shape of a split hexagon, fitted on her throat. Its irregular shape is often covered up by the turtleneck of her thick sweater which she seems to wear all year around. The black cotton gives a balance to her otherwise pale white skin, giving her more of a pleasant and friendly look. Her gaze looks absent, a trait which one gets after having lived for many millennia. She carries with her a passive smile as to show her contentment with her situation, and as her smile grows it occassionally gives her eyes a more lifelike look.
Personality: Vanadinite is a gem with such a strong fighting spirit that she stands tall against the most fearsome of threats, even the Diamonds. Her innate strength, both physically and mentally, makes her a stalwart protector of those she holds dear. She is quick to take action when it's needed rather than to stay idle, doing what she believes is right no matter the consequences. Thus she can have a hard time following orders made by others, as she'd rather take charge of situations herself. In the end, she will accomplish her goal by any means necessary, even if it means sacrificing her own gem.
To her friends, she shows a caring and considerate side of her that tries to make her companions feel the best that they can. She is easy to relax and have fun to forget about the world, never missing an opportunity to spend more time with those that she trusts. Vanadinite even goes as far as to make jokes and tease her comrades, all in good faith to heighten the mood. As long as those around her are safe, she feels safe. If their lives are threatened, she begins to feel threatened. As such she goes out of her way to protect her loved ones, both from physical and verbal assault. Anything that might harm her friends is something that harms her, and she is quick to put an end to the source of such harm.
At times, her protective behaviour can lead to Vanadinite getting blindsighted by her own frustration and rage. She is easy to rile up which will turn her into a different person where she begins throwing away common sense in favor of satisfying her emotions. She is self-aware about her own faults, but finding a way to control it is something which she struggles with to this day.
Likes/Dislikes: Vanadinite enjoys the company of others more than anything else, as the silence of being alone can give wake to thoughts she'd rather forget about. She's eager to make new friends that she can extend her wing over and protect at all costs, all the while making sure they have an enjoyable time. She dislikes the thought of others having to experience atrocities, as such she tries her best to shield others from it.
Fears: Vanadinite fears losing all her friends above all else, possessing the willpower to do anything for the sake of their survival.
Weapon: A two-handed warhammer, to deliver the most powerful of kisses with.
Ability 1: Lidar
The Vanadinite caste is one essential to Homeworld's space travel. Their eyes possess a special property which shoots out a normally undetectable infrared light wherever they look. By measuring the time it takes for the light to bounce back, Vanadinites are able to determine distances with high precision. This makes them incredibly effective steerers of spacecraft, able to avoid debris during sub-light speeds.
This power is not limited to only spacecraft navigation however. The information gathered by a Vanadinite creates a detailed topographical map of their surroundings which they can project from their gemstone. This data is essential for colonization and environmental monitoring, allowing for careful planning and precise architecture for the engineers.
A drawback to this constant influx of information is that their eyes are far more sensitive to overstimulation. Flashing them with blinding brightness will temporarily suppress their ability as well as their ordinary sight.
There are also ways to trick their mapping of surroundings by having something reflect or absorb the infrared light. Two Vanadinites are rarely seen operating together, as the conflicting signals would cause confusion.
Ability 2: Remote Sensor
Vanadinites are not an easily mass produced caste. This is not because of a lack of minerals, as the components which power them are found in plenty of planets. The problem lies in the design of their power, requiring a lot of energy to produce the computational power needed inside the gem. For this reason there are times where it is more affordable to send an amethyst gem to delve into dangerous territory, as should the gem perish it would not be a huge loss.
This caused the introduction of an alternative solution. While the Vanadinite remained the main computer to process the information, they could rely their power on the eyes of other gems. This is done through a process called attuning, where the Vanadinite must touch the gem of the recipient to form the connection. The recipient will have their eyes assume a red glow and the Vanadinite will now be able to receive information without being physically present themselves.
Often this meant that the Vanadinite would close their own eyes to better focus on the remote pair, but a Vanadinite does have the processing capability to handle two pair of eyes at once. Attempting to go beyond this limit was ill advised as the gem would not endure for long before getting overwhelmed by the information, resulting in a similar state of blindness as a flash of light.
Whenever a Vanadinite endures a sensory overload, the bond between the Vanadinite and any other gems will be broken. The poofing of either gem will also cause the bond to break.

History:
"My first memory is breaking out of that place. Opening my eyes, breathing in the atmosphere. A whole world unveiled before me, one which I knew I would be exploring. At the time, all I could feel was excitement."
Vanadinite birthed from the ground alongside her sisters on the distant planet Aquilae b. She was given the serial identification Facet-A10 Cut-6TB, though those close to her simply referred to her as A10. Her mingling with fellow vanadinites was short-lived, many of them escorted off to different sectors where they would begin their work. Some would take the occupation of space navigators, others would analyze the atmosphere of planets and create a topographical map of the surface through their monitoring capabilities. The Vanadinite caste was at the top of its class when it came to raw processing power in a gem, at least towards the end of Era 1. This led them to being favored among the White Court during colonization, but also in those of higher class among the other courts.
"I was the navigator of some fancy scouting ship. We'd be traveling at *juuust* under the speed of light to where I could see the way forward. Yeah, it was nerve-wrecking, especially the first few galaxies. But I quickly got used to it."
Though it was her first voyage, A10 excelled at her purpose. Not only did she make full use of her capabilities as a gem, but she tended to always make the right calls when it came to choosing their next destination. The expedition turned out to be a great success in discovering several planets, some of which would later become established colonies under White Diamond.
Cut 5T5 was another Vanadinite that traveled with the main transport ship following the scouting team. A10 and 5T5 would meet on occasional planet stops to discuss flightpaths, and it was on an occasion like this one where A10 would learn why two vanadinites seldom worked together. The two of them had started scanning their surroundings simultaneously, and the conflicting signals caused headache and disorientation in both. A10 was given her first reprimand for this action, as her role was to act merely as navigator during the expedition, not to map the surface.
"I asked her what it was like to work on planet. See I only got to see the planet in person whenever we had to wait for the transport ship to catch up. 5T5 told me it was completely different, and she said to me that there was nothing better than the feeling of mapping an entire planet's surface. I think that's when I started to really think about my role in Homeworld."
Vanadinites had a secondary function which let them borrow the eyes of others gems, making them shoot out infrared light just like the vanadinites did. The calculations and rendering of the data would still be done in the vanadinite, and the affected gem wouldn't feel a thing. A10 was not supposed to use this ability as it would worsen her processing speed while traveling so close to light speed.
On the next meet-up with the transport vessel, A10 noticed a lapis lazuli about to take flight. An impulse from within took over, and she managed to touch the others' gemstone in time. As she left on the scouting vessel, she could still see through the lapis lazuli's eyes. A10 felt like she was herself soaring over the surface with water-conjured wings. It was a beautiful sight. So beautiful that she got distracted during the flight.
"I sort of crashed the ship. It was just a tiny piece of debris, but it shot a hole through half the ship. We had to make an emergency landing on a nearby moon where we'd wait for a rescue team. I felt pretty bad about it at the time."
A10 was reprimanded again, and this time she wouldn't keep her position. She was immediately discharged from the leading scouting unit and was sent back to Homeworld where she'd be reassigned. She was no longer part of the White court, instead she had been transferred to serve under the new Pink diamond. Once again she'd be scouting for planets, rather than getting the opportunity to explore them herself.
It wasn't long until they managed to find what they were looking for. Designated Sigma-10, though also known as its colloquial name Earth. The planet which changed everything.
"It looked like this beautiful blue orb from afar. A sparkling drop of life in an otherwise barren solar system. I could feel it calling out to me. I just knew I needed to see it up close."
It was on that day A10 left behind her imperial identity. She abandoned her ship and the rest of her crew, left to wander the planet on her own. It was reported that an accident had caused the shattering of A10. Nobody wanted to say she had defected, because surely the blame would fall on them for not being able to stop her escape.
Now simply known as Vanadinite she began to explore the planet, eager to map it all down in her head so that she could one day project the blue orb in its entirety. However, her grand ambition often led her sidetracked as she came upon the humans. Creatures shaped just like gems, only far weaker and who would change in the blink of an eye. Despite such differences she found them quite fun to be around, learning all sorts of cultures and languages throughout time. She became a witness to its history, and is today a devout protector of the realm. Be they corrupted gems or Homeworld imperials, Vanadinite does everything in her power to keep them at bay and make sure this planet is safe.
