Just a thought but bear with me.
So I was talking with Calcite, as one does, and we kicked around the idea of NPC duty for people to take if they wish. The impetus was that some people can't always be around to post, and some people end up stuck without anyone to play with or even abandoned in their own thread just because not everyone is always available. Also on a constructive side of things, some people might just want their thread padded out with another player to make things more interesting or provide a little breathing room if other players are busy. Basically because people can't have their actual characters be everywhere at once, separate of their character they could participate in a thread that needs it (if they have the time and want to) through the role of a temporary NPC.
One of the walls we ran into is that it might be hard to NPC the sorts of characters people would want to play with. Understandably, almost always players would most likely want other gems as NPCs which might get a little difficult because of the ephemeral or "one-shot" nature of NPCs compared with the fairly complex and limited nature of gems. An easy fix off the top of my head though would be to use gems that are known by canon at least to be numerous enough, so something like Pearl NPCs could maybe work for the intended purpose. Calcite brought up the possibility of NPCing humans as well, but that's probably farther in the grey area due to the obvious problems and rules pertaining to humans, and as well that people may not want to have their thread populated with human(s) NPCs, for many reasons not just their limited capabilities and potential inability to meaningfully participate in gem activities. Still though, it's just another possible answer to the question at hand.
So yeah, just a consideration to help out people who need it, by allowing NPC duty. To avoid having a massive flood of NPCs into the site and threads, perhaps it could be made a position. Like a member chooses to be a part of the NPC duty, for which there is a thread in which other players can request an NPC for their thread, and people on NPC duty can answer and help the requesting players out. If you aren't on NPC duty then you can't make NPCs, or at least to the same extent that they would be used here, as actual temporary "characters" played by actual players to help out with a thread. For simplicity sake and testing purposes, if the idea is to be considered, perhaps limit the role to just one willing person at a time for awhile. Then if it shows to actually help and benefit the RP, maybe open up some more positions for the task.
Also, forgive me if this idea has already been brought up before, or already exists to some extent.
