The warp pad on an ancient island glowed to life, the vines that had overgrown on it fizzling out of existence as a beam of light deposited Blue and Oplite on it. The two looked around. "Is this the right island?" Opalite asked as she stepped off the pad. Blue stepped off after her and nodded while looking at a holo-tablet that they had stolen. "Yes, the artifact should be two hundred paces that way." Blue says and points in a direction. Opalite smiles and nods as they begin walking, unaware that Homeworld would want this same artifact. Also unaware of the storm that would trap them on the island with the one homeworld gem who they had major problems with in the past.
Birdsong filled the ambient, tropic breeze that moved through the swaying trees, rustling their large fanned leaves. Heat emanated from the sand and moss that the sapphire stepped over as she circled the gemmic object; a prism that had been placed in the center of the island. Her leads told her that, at a certain time of the day, the light would strike the prism just so, and reveal the location of the artifact she had been assigned to retrieve. But, while the prism did give off a dazzling array of colors, lighting the sparse foliage with rainbows to contrast with the midday sun, she couldn't yet decipher this puzzle. She was unsure if her leads had given her correct information, and there was still the possibility that this itself was a trap.
Nearby, her jasper bodyguard stood attentively, and silent, as she scanned the surroundings, keeping an eye on things for the sapphire as she worked. 3JJ's bulky arms were crossed, until she noticed the light that beamed up from the warp. Her arms fell, "Your clarity," Jasper whispered, eyes honed in on the direction of the warp pad that they had come from,"The warp has been activated,"
"What?" Padparadscha whirled to look into that direction as well, though there wasn't much to see but plantlife from this vantage point, her eyes widened slightly. There would be no reason for other loyalists to come here; if there were, she would've been contacted by base. She tapped her bracelet to bring up her holoscreen and checked for a message, but there was none. "They're rebels. We can't be sure why they're here, but if they know about the object..." What would she do? She hadn't been expecting hostiles, and she couldn't let them get to the artifact hidden somewhere on the island,"Maybe they don't know about the riddle. Take cover and see what they do," Padparadscha dove for a nearby cluster of rocks and scrub plants, while Jasper made to duck behind a thick tree.
Blue and Opalite walked and exchanged small talk, every now and then as they grew closer to the sapphire and jasper's hiding places, their laughs and giggles could be heard. Soon after their voices, which may have been all to familiar to the pink gem. "Another few yards and it should be up ahead." Blue said, the stolen holo-tablet in her hand. Opalite nodded and jumped into the air, fluttering around Blue, making her laugh and shake her head. For the first time, they looked like they were having a good time before encountering an enemy. At this point it culd be told who they were. The large gold star on Blue's chest, and the large gold star on Opalite's back would give them away.
Blue had stopped when she spotted a small bit of light, coming from the prism that the sapphire had brought along. She scanned the trees and shrubs, maybe to catch a glimpse of it again, and pinpoint it. "What is it?" Opalite asked and scanned the foliage as well. "I saw something." Blue states as she continues her search, before she shakes her head and turns to keep walking, Opalite following quickly. "I must be going crazy." Blue stated as they continued. "Let's find that artifact before we attract attention to ourselves." Blue says.
While she waited inside of the foliage, Padparadscha noticed the air pressure changing. The wind picked up, rippling through the leaves in the trees, but it continued to carry an equatorial heat as well as the scent of sea salt. She furrowed her brows, glancing up toward the sky; it was clear for now, but in the distance she could see the shadow of dark clouds moving over the water. For her, this wasn't particularly significant, as she didn't think mudslides or typhoons would be a problem in this location, but all the same Earth was an unpredictable planet. Aside, the clouds seemed to be lingering a ways out yet.
What came next, she truly hadn't planned for. Her jaw fell open as she instantly recognized the voices of two rebels who had escaped her not once, but twice in the past. Among others, these gems were at the top of her seek and capture list, especially after her consultation with the Diamonds about high-profile suspects like these. Last time, she and 6UE had been unable to successfully detain them, and she wasn't entirely confident that she and 3JJ would be able to do so this time. Additionally, it sounded like these Crystal Gems were indeed here for the same thing that she was, but there still wasn't confirmation.
Without the prism, the Crystal Gems would be unable to quickly locate the object; it might take them days, weeks, or even months to root around on the island in search of the artifact. For once, the sapphire felt as if she had a small advantage; here, she had leverage that she didn't have in the last two encounters-- the prism.
"It wasn't your imagination, Blue Goldstone," Padparadscha spoke up, stepping out of the foliage to reveal herself,"In fact, you have already called attention to yourselves," She quirked a brow, and clasped her hands behind her back. As she did, the huge jasper soldier stepped out with her poker-face on, silently glaring at the Crystal Gems and keeping close to her aristocratic patron,"I have to wonder what you two are doing out here, so far from your rebel sanctum,"
Both Blue and Opalite came to a halt, automatically recognizing the voice. Blue then turned and looked the jasper up and down. Opalite turned around and peered up at the orange soldier. "So, where's you old guard? Did you replace her?" Blue asked with a chuckle, they didn't make any moves they stood still. Blue finally stepped forward, standing straight, not making a move to attack, instead she walked up to the jasper.
Blue was able to look down at the soldier. "Hmm, I see now." Blue stated, Opalite just stood back, now keeping an eye on the shorter pink gem. "You needed someone stronger than your other attack dog." Blue grinned, her sharpened canines showing. She held the holo-tablet up and looked at it, she turned her back to the jasper as she typed a few things. She began walking back to where Opalite stood. Opalite shakily reached to her gem, she was about to summon her weapon before Blue held her hand up and shook her head. "B-but, they're on homeworld's side." Opalite stated. "I can see that, but I doubt they want to fight in this environment, both me and that Jasper would be to big to do any good, so it would be between you and her." Blue says and points at Paddy. "And I don't think either side knows how that would turn out."
Jasper didn't flinch as Bluegold approached, but she did take the moment to size up the other gem; It would be a hard fight, she could tell this opponent was skilled just by the way she moved, but 3JJ had a mind to think she would win in a fight against this runaway. After all, rebels were inherently defective; why else would they leave behind Homeworld to fight against their own kind? Jasper had been created here, but she still saw it as an untamed colony belonging solely to her Diamond, Pink Diamond.
"Her defects got in the way of the efficiency of my work," Padparadscha answered,"So yes, I needed a less flawed bodyguard. But that doesn't mean I plan to fight you two," She noted the fact that the rebel gems seemed to skirt around her questioning, but it was easy to deduce that they were all here for the same thing. The sapphire stepped forward,"I've realized that the tactics I've taken with you in the past were not effective; at first I tried to win your friendship. Then, I attempted to simply apprehend you," As she ruminated out loud, she paced around the very center of the island, the prism glinting in the light as she moved,"Perhaps I was mistaken in my approach,"
As she spoke, the wind became stronger, the clouds in the distance seemed to be picking up speed, but Padparadscha didn't pay mind to it. She was immersed as she formulated her plan to face down these two gems once and for all, to finally capture them and bring them to court to face their fate; they would rue the day that they declined her offer of painless trial and reintegration. "But it seems the four of us have gathered in this specific location, for a specific purpose, no? We're all here for the same thing. I can think of no other reason-- and Blue Goldstone, I can assure you that I do know what will come of this endeavor," The sapphire's confident tone framed her smirk as she came to a halt to stare down the enemy gems,"You both might as well leave now, you'll not find what you're looking for,"
Blue froze and tensed up. Not from fear, or any similar emotion. A rumble began in Blue's chest. But a few seconds later turned into a full on laugh. Opalite looked up at Blue, confused. "You actually think that an upgraded bodyguard will give you the advantage here? Or anything you can do for that matter. Every time we meet, it's the same, you think you're better than us, and that somehow, you're rank on home world affects us." Blue spoke her mind. "Well, news flash, a superiority complex doesn't have anything to do with what you or I can accomplish." Blue narrowed her eyes as Opalite looked around, her eyes turned upward. "You have no idea, what we're capable of, and I suggest the two of you understand that now. I commanded dozens of troops like you..." Blue looked to Jasper. "And all of them, had the same look in their eye when they popes out of the ground. 'I'm better than this gem.' Well. I may be no better than you, but you're no better than me." Her anger began to bubble to the surface.
Jasper continued to be silent, the only movement of the gem were the narrowing of her eyes at Blue as she was addressed. 3JJ's muscles tensed as well, but more in anticipation of an attack than anything else. She stayed close to her patron, but allowed her eyes to travel after the other soldier gem, keeping track of her movements.
"No," Padparadscha clipped, the smug grin on her face grew,"Does it matter who you once commanded? You no longer do, you've defected, if you remember," For the sapphire this was undeniable proof of the matter that she and her bodyguard were in fact less flawed than these rebels,"But at any rate, it's not the bodyguard who gives me an advantage," She could win a fight against them, especially after seeing their tactics so many times; aside she was getting better at it herself. But as she had said, that wasn't what gave her the advantage; it was the prism, and her own hard-earned knowledge. That was something none of these gems could take from her, she wouldn't allow it-- she'd rather instigate a fight than that.
"If you're here for the artifact, which I'm sure you must be," The sapphire's voice lowered in tone as she shifted her weight, and rose her chin slightly as she stared down Opal and Blue,"Then I'm afraid you're already too late. I'm giving you a chance to leave before things stop going your way," These rebels had been lucky up to this point, but she grew weary with them; every rebel would be apprehended at one point or another, she didn't feel an urgency that she once did. Homeworld would eventually be victorious, and it wasn't her responsibility to save them from what they would do to themselves in the meantime, as much as she wished they would come around to the right side of things again.
Blue growled before she stepped back a step and took a deep breath. Her point had not been seen, these two looked at them the same. What could she have been expecting? "Blue?" Opalite poked Blue's arm. Blue looked down at her companion and gave a light smile, as if seeing her face had made Blue's problems go away. Opalite pointed to the sky, as while this argument escalated, the wind had kicked up, ripping leaves of the trees. Blue looked up. Opalite's eyes widened as her wings unfurled. She jumped forward and into the air, blocking a bolt of lightning, absorbing most of it, the rest being expelled so it wouldn't start a fire or hit someone who would be unable to handle it. She fell down to the ground, she was struggling to try to stand up. Blue kneeled down next to her, attempting to help. "I-I'm fine." She said, making Blue sit there, unaware of what to do.
Padparadscha whirled at the suddenness of the storm's assault; she had been expecting it, and it still caught her off guard. She and Jasper took cover from the lightening strike, but in that same moment, the electricity that had been slung off by Opalite struck nearby foliage-- which had been in a rather dry heat not but moments ago. Flames burst out into the underbrush, eluding the patter of rain that struck the canopy of the tropical trees. "Tch," She grit her teeth; it seemed like Earthling weather was always getting in the way of things. She turned toward her bodyguard,"Lets just warp out of here while they're distracted, and come back later. They're not going to find it without the prism," Without waiting for confirmation from 3JJ, the sapphire scrambled out of her cover and dashed for the warp pad. The heavy footfall of Jasper was close behind her, but the bodyguard made sure to keep an eye on the rebels as they passed by.
However, when they got to the warp pad, the sapphire's eyes widened; shock and despair mingled in her expression as a rock-slide from a nearby volcanic crag had utterly smashed the crystalline gem technology. Jasper hurried forward, and began tossing boulders off of the shattered remains of the warp. "Don't bother, 3JJ," Padparadscha's shoulders hiked up as her panic began to take over,"I'll-- I'll just get in touch with pearl. We'll be out of here in no time," She quickly brought up her holoscreen as the wind howled, trees aching as they were bent down by the force. Rain pummeled the sandy ground, creating a muck that the two gems sloshed through to get back to the center of the island, not far from the warp. "We're trapped," She announced coldly for the rebels to hear, her hair weighed down around her by the rain.
Blue stood quickly and looked around. "What!?" She asked as another lightning bolt struck nearby. "I can't take another one of those." Opalite says as Blue notices the fire. She walks towards a flaming bush and reaches into it, ripping it up from the ground and tossing it over next to Opalite, she jumped back and stared at the fire. "It won't burn for long, so we need stuff that will." Blue said and walked off, not to far away. Opalite crawled over to the fire and sat down, hugging her knees and watching the flame eat at the leaves of the bush. Blue searched around for dry wood and sticks to keep the fire going, they would need it as it looked like they were staying the night on the island.
The sapphire produced enough of her own thermal radiation to be warm despite the sudden typhoon that had fallen around them. In fact, the thermal radiation heightened as her state of emotion did; her anger rose with her temperature, and the water that pelted her skin steamed off. She was followed by a billowing cloud of fog as she marched around in circles. "Unbelievable!" she exclaimed,"I swear my infinite life-span gets shorter each time I come to this Diamond-forsaken planet!" Her small foot swung out, and she kicked a pebble across the clearing.
Jasper followed the sapphire with her eyes, and was generally displeased herself. She wasn't bothered by the cold rain, but the sensation of water falling in irritating droplets over her hair, into her eyes and mouth, was a decidedly unpleasant one. 3JJ glared across the clearing, to where Opalite had huddled up next to the small flame Blue Goldstone had captured. But, the jasper continued to not speak a word. She crossed her arms, and watched the other soldier closely as she walked around to gather fuel for the fire.
The sapphire calmed down a bit after a moment of pacing, and slowed to a stop. She gave a heavy huff of air, and looked at her prism. Without sunlight, the location of the artifact wouldn't be revealed. Some part of her wanted to blame the rebels for this, even though she was well aware of the fickle Earthling climates. "It's just my luck, isn't it?" She muttered, and her eyes fell onto the tiny fire that the other gems attempted to keep going. Her brow raised; in a storm like this one, she doubted the fire would keep going for very long, but at the moment she didn't quite feel like helping the rebels, using her plasma ability or otherwise. She sloshed across the clearing and plopped herself down onto a mat of moss that had grown beneath a large, twisted tree. Jasper moved to stand next to her patron, who was clearly still miffed about the whole situation.
"Your clarity," Jasper whispered,"Are we going to apprehend them?"
"Not yet," The sapphire grumbled, still peering down at the prism in her hand,"It would be far too soon, anything could go wrong and we'd be trapped. Pearl wont be here for hours,"
Opalite and Blue were not bothered by the sapphire's tantrum, as Blue had collected enough fuel to keep it running for a while longer. She walked over and dropped what she could in. It made the flame grow bugger, but not much. Blue growled her annoyance and sat across from Opalite. There would be no other dry spots on the island by now. Opalite looked up at Blue and smiles, getting a smile in return. Before the two's shoulders were shaking with laughter. It started small and got louder. "Just our luck huh?" Blue asked and held a hand out to the flame. The flame licked at her fingers as Opalite nodded and watched. "Stuck on an island with two home world gems." Blue spoke softly. "At least we're not alone." Opalite said, getting a nod out of Blue.
Sitting idly was one of the many things that irritated the sapphire; among her distaste for the often inconvenient timing of Earth's inimical weather patterns, and her hatred for rebelling criminals like the ones across from her. She quietly stewed, trying to keep her anger under control, but it was a difficult endeavor considering the laughter of her enemy was within earshot. On top of that, the clouds blocking the sun's rays at the most inopportune time would mean a huge set-back in her schedule. Her jaw clenched as she stared across the clearing, her eyes burrowing into the foes that had eluded her time and time again.
The jasper could sense the rising anger of her patron just by the temperature of the air immediately surrounding the smaller gem, and while she was none too pleased herself, she began to worry that the sapphire might start finding ways to take out her anger. 3JJ was partially justified in her worries as Padparadscha finally had enough of idly waiting for the sun to show again. The sapphire got to her feet, and went back to the center of the clearing where she had been originally.
Then, a bauble of light bloomed as a mass of plasma began to coalesce above her, like a small captured star. She sent it as far up as it would go and still retain it's bright light; the entire clearing was washed in warm, artificial light as she worked the mass into a larger and larger personal star. With the rain pelting through her construct, cooling it, she had to expend more energy to make it work-- but her irritation did something to charge her willpower, and her ability. She finally stuck the prism into the air, and began allowing the light from her plasma to do what the sun would have been doing without the rain. Jasper watched her patron, and lumbered nearby while Padparadscha worked, sending rippling rainbows across the clearing.
Blue and Opalite looked up at the artificial sun. Opalite smiled slightly while Blue just growled again. "We don't need it..." Blue said to her companion. "That artifact won't help homeworld, based on their numbers." She said. "Homeworld only sent them to get it to keep it away from the rebellion." Opalite was surprised at Blue's look on things. "Anything to cripple the rebellion." Blue said and watched the two homeworld gems. She just pulled the tablet out and stared at the screen. The rain had begun to let up but not stop. Blue stood and made her way back to where to warp pad was, to see if anyone could repair it. Maybe when the two homeworld gems checked on it, but now it had been buried under more rocks and mud was added to the top of the pile. Opalite wasn't far behind, but only caught up to go back. Blue was muttering under her breath. "It's beyond repairs..." Blue said.
