"Advanced maneuvers..." Lapis slowly parroted, apparently liking the sound of that. It sounded more official than anything she had been doing recently. She hurried over to another downed tree and attempted to drag it into the clearing like Ruby, but was apparently not strong enough to do such a thing. Not one to be easily discouraged, she instead turned her attention to the clearing itself. Grass didn't seem very arena-like. She's have to do something about that. With a mental picture of the relative size of their future arena, she went to work pulling the grass out by hand. This was about as tedious as you could expect, and even Lapis grew tired of it quickly. She huffed and looked through the supplies she'd brought with her and decided that neither an axe nor a shovel would get the job done. With little notice she jumped into the air. "I'm going to ask the humans how to get rid of grass! You should keep moving trees!" She called out to Ruby as she disappeared towards Beach City.
Ruby watched her pull the grass out by hand, knowing that it was probably futile, but also not wanting to break her stride. So she kept on dragging trees, until she was promoted again by Lapis, disappearing into the trees. “What? Oh - ok!”
She blinked and shrugged, though now, as she dragged trees, she glanced off towards the forest, as if always expecting to see Lapis there. To be fair, there wasn’t a lot to take her mind of things, so she just focused on pulling the trees into a border around the arena as efficiently as possible. This meant mostly dragging, but sometimes chucking logs a short distance. This wasn’t a huge distance, and she ended up having to run over and move them farther by hand, but it at least felt better.
About 20 minutes later, Lapis returned to the forest with nothing. "I'm just coming back to get the bag. The humans showed me what I could use to get rid of the grass but I can't carry it." She went over to dump all the tools out the mesh backpack. "But you're doing a great job here! I can already see how the arena is going to look." She set the bag on, turned back around and took off again. "I'll be back soon! Bye!"
And she was back soon. In her bag was a container of weed killer, which she removed and displayed to Ruby. "The humans told me if we dump this special water on the grass, the grass will go away," She said with a grin. "The humans are pretty creative." She hurried into the arena and began spraying the grass. "...I'm starting to get really excited for this arena. I can't wait to finally train with you."
"Special water that makes the grass go away?" Ruby blinked and looked down at the grass. "That's so strange. I wonder where they get it from - the ocean maybe? Also-" Ruby put down the log she was carrying, filling in an opening in the vague ring around the clearing she'd made with logs. "Could you just use your water powers to spread it? Since its water? Or can you only use that?" She looked at Lapis, then looked at the grass that was being sprayed, then the thing that Lapis was using to spray the weed killer.
"...and when is it supposed to work?" Ruby said, with a little pout, peering down low to look at the blades of grass.
Lapis sighed. It's not like her to become annoyed but she found herself having to answer this question too many times recently. "...no Ruby. Because I'm defective, I can only use the water that comes out of my gem. Special water doesn't count." She squatted down beside her to stare at the grass, and at least made an attempt at movie the weedkiller just in case. She wiggled her fingers at it, but nothing happened other than the tips of her hair beginning to blow in a wind that wasn't there. She let out another sigh.
"But as for how long it takes to work, um...." She stared at the grass, hoping it would go away by the time it took for her to finish the 'um'. "...I don't know. I probably should have asked the humans how long with would take."
Ruby looked very embarrassed, so she just frowned and added, "Oh... yeah, sorry. That's okay, though - you don't have to do any of that, I was just wondering! I like you the way you are." She attempted to walk her comments back, but just sighed and figured it'd probably be best to drop it. "I guess humans need to get rid of grass because if they don't then maybe it gets all over their infrastructure? I mean, it grows everywhere! And they probably have to get rid of it before they build buildings too so that it doesn't grow through the floor." Ruby guessed.
"That's why there's no grass inside our apartment! Though, I'd sort of like that..." She mused quietly, then continued to stare at the grass that shouldn't be there.
"Humans don't seem to like it very much if they get rid of it wherever they plan to do a lot of walking," She also mused. "Maybe that is why. Mr. Donjonnio probably covered the floors in this water before he started giving out the apartments, though... maybe I got the wrong water," She said with a suspicious squint. "If it doesn't go away by tonight I'll buy more of it and spray again. We could practice other combat stuff in the meantime!" She said with a smile. "Like... footwork? or... um... I don't know combat stuff. Maybe... something if we're ever in a place where I can't do a lot of flying? Or if we... er... I don't know."
"That's a good point! I mean, I'm pretty straightforward, I punch." Ruby showed off for a bit by stringing a few punches together into a combo. "But I don't really get to see what you can do when you're not using your water to fly. If someone was really close to you, could you use your water to push them back? Or maybe you could keep someone frozen in a block of ice if they get too close!" Ruby offered excitedly.
"Or put the water above their head and then make a big block of ice that falls and hits them!" Ruby makes a dramatic whooshing noise followed by a crashing noise to indicate the ice tumbling out of the sky and crashing on someone's head.
Lapis lets water flow through her fingers and form knuckledusters like Ruby's. She turns away and tries the combo of punches Ruby had performed, but it doesn't look very convincing or threatening coming from baby lapis. Then she let it become a whip and that seemed more satisfying to her. She stood properly again and let the water retreat to another part of her body. "And well.. I definitely know I can freeze limbs! But... pushing people away... hrm..." She suddenly blinked. "Oh! I remember!"
She summoned more water as if she were about to make wings, but instead put her forearms together and closed her eyes to concentrate. Her hair began to flutter in that absent wind, indicating this is probably something that took a little more effort. The water bunched on her forearms and began spreading wide both up and down, freezing as it went. Before long she had created a wide shield with her arms buried into it. "I know I could definitely use this for protection! I—" She stopped as another thought suddenly took hold and her eyes went wide. "Ruby... with this you could attack from the sky too!" She leaned backwards as if to make a ramp of herself and the shield, and Ruby would see two globs of water escape from her gem and slink down to her ankles as if to help brace herself. "Jump!"
Ruby stares at Lapis when she instructs her to jump, but nods. She steps back a little bit, sort of slipping on a branch, but she rights herself immediately and takes a deep breath to steady. Then she runs full tilt at the shield and hops up onto it, slipping ever so slightly, but then crouching and jumping hard off of it. Because she's already so light, Ruby shoots into the air. "Woohoo!" She shouts, before realizing that she should probably do something while she's up there. So she summons her knuckledusters and punches a branch off, before landing straight back down on the ramp, and cooly sliding down its surface onto the grass. "How was that?" She grinned widely.
Lapis beamed at watching Ruby go airborne, and got so distracted by it that she almost didn't realize Ruby was coming back down on top of her. She managed to brace at the last moment to allow Ruby a safe landing, then cheered. "That was AMAZING! I have to figure out how to make ice less slippery but I think we really figured out something new!" The shield parted from her arms and she dropped it to the ground, then frowned at the grass. "...I think the special water might take a while. Maybe we should finish what we can with the arena and go home. We can probably spend time talking about some other... advanced maneuvers."She apparently still liked that term, and giggled.
"Yeaaah, at this point I think it might make more sense to talk about stuff we can do before we actually do it. Not that I don't think that experimenting like this isn't fun! But we've experimented so much already, and we only just built the arena, so... hm... maybe next time we can train against each other instead of with each other? Like play fight?" Ruby suggested, but then looked a little bit worried as if she wasn't sure if she should have suggested it.
"Unless you don't want to - cause that'd be okay too, and - I'd definitely understand! Especially with all the stuff we've been through."She said, nervously, as if immediately backpedaling from the thought after she suggested it.
Lapis did look nervous at the thought of that, and she rubbed at her arm in thought. The water still enveloping her arm slipped up and down as to not get in the way, perhaps suggesting that she was improving at manipulating water even unconsciously. "I guess we could... we could even do it right now, if we wanted." She walked over to the arena and stepped over a log to 'enter' it. "I suppose it makes sense to train against each other. In a way... we could probably get a better idea of how we think, so that working together becomes easier. The more we know each other like that, the easier it'll be to... think... at the same time?" She tried, raising a brow. "But I don't want to hurt you."
Ruby blinked, walking over slowly with her hands together in front of her. She still looked latently nervous. "I-... I don't want to hurt you either." She admitted, shuffling uncomfortably. "I mean, you're right, we could get a better idea of how we fight, but, you and I both know how I get and... I don't know how well I could even really fight against you. For me, fighting means getting really angry and - I can't get angry at you." Ruby said, with a little apologetic smile.
"I can convince myself that you're not, well, you, like how I convinced myself that that tree was a corruption or some mean Gem, but I wouldn't want to do that." She shuffled in place. "But - we can figure something out if you want to. I don't want to stop you from doing anything, and - and if you think that our fighting might help us fight better..." She trailed off, looking up at Lapis.
"Then maybe we shouldn't." She said, holding her hands out to either side in an 'oh well' fashion. "I suppose we could always.. or..." Lapis trailed off as all this hard thinking took her mind hostage. "..One second." With that, she slipped into memories. Her mirrored eyes stared blankly as her mouth slowly mouthed something silent and incoherent, likely unconsciously so. She swayed slightly from side to side, just barely managing to keep herself up. She was in there for much longer than she usually was. Whatever it is she was reflecting back on, it probably happened a while ago. After about 30 seconds she snapped back to life. Her eyes were back to normal, but she still stared at Ruby with intensity.
This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
