At first the desert seemed so much like the beta kindergarten, sand, rock and not much else for as far as the eye could see. Yet, as she continued to explore this strange place, she began to notice that unlike the kindergarten, this place was very much alive. From the strange gnarled trees and shrubs that clung stubbornly to the stone they grew out of, to the small scaled creatures that occasionally skittered across her path. Several hours later, she lay down in the shadow of a rocky outcrop. The heat was, not unbearable, she'd dealt with temperatures much higher than this before, but it was uncomfortable.
'Why would anything willingly live out here?' Citrine thought, 'Do they enjoy making things harder for themselves?'
She closed her eyes against the brightness of the sun and soon she'd dozed off.
Unfortunately her nap was short lived. She'd been asleep for only a few minutes when she heard it.
An unearthly piercing scream.
The gem's corrupted form was massive, with long spindly legs that ended not with hooves, but feet that looked oddly humanoid. Its antlers appeared to be wrapped in some sort of ribbon that hung off the tines in tattered strips. Embedded in it's forehead, just barely distinguishable from the dark red fur that covered it's body, was its gem, with a deep crack running through the middle of it. Despite its long, tapered muzzle not having any visible mouth, it kept on making the same terrible screaming noise.
Citrine jumped out of the way, just as the thing crashed into the rocks she was just laying under, reducing them to rubble. It straightened up and looked directly at her. Citrine shuddered and drew her hammer.
She charged at the monster and swung, digging the bladed end of her weapon into it's neck and swinging up onto the thing's back. She grabbed a fistful of the beast's shaggy fur as it began to thrash about, trying to dislodge her. She struck the monster's neck and the back of its head several times, it was nearly impossible for Citrine to strike the thing's gem as it kept thrashing about, But perhaps if she kept this up, she'd be able to wear it down.
