Name: Peridot Facet-17C3V Cut-4XN
Appeared Gender: Female
Gemstone: Peridot
Gemstone location: Slightly below right wrist
Corrupted: No
Appearance:
As an era 1 Peridot, she is bigger than the Peridot from the show. As a general estimate, she is about the size of Steven's Peridot when she had her limb enhancers. My Peridot, however, does not need limb enhancers and is actually that big/tall. She has developed a fascination with 50's style and culture, and as such wears a fedora, olive green vest, white shirt, and green slacks with shiny black shoes. Her hair is short, pixie cut style (similar to Pearl's) and is yellow. Her small, triangular gemstone is located slightly below her right wrist.
Personality:
Peridot can come across as cold and calculated. She carries a lot of bitterness inside her, but she isn't often openly hostile to other gems. Her compassion shows in dealing with humans, as she is ultimately fighting to protect them. Issues such as individual gem freedom and breaking away from the caste system don't really matter to her, so she will often respond to other Crystal Gems who support these causes with indifference or annoyance. Deep down, she longs to create gems again, and even going near a kindergarten fills her with sadness.
Weapon/tools: Her weapon is a green tommy gun. The barrel and magazine are studded with green gemstones, and it fires green laser bullets in a continuous spray. The range is 150 meters, and she can fire continuously for about 10 seconds before having to "reload" (recharge). Reloading will take one-two posts to do, since she probably has to find cover. One magazine holds 50 rounds. While a few stray rounds won't do much to damage a gem, if Peridot can catch someone with the full force of her gun, she can bring most gems to the verge of poofing (with the exception of tougher gems like Quartz and Bismouths). Each individual round isn't strong enough to penetrate most metals, but a full clip could pierce through something like a dumpster. She also carries around a small, electronic device with which she uses for communication, data logging, and hacking when necessary.
Ability 1: Metal control. Peridot can control up to 10 tons of metal telekinetically (but with great strain). The weight of the metal affects how powerful her control is. She can barely move a full 10 tons, but she can make her little device float next to her indefinitely with no effort at all. She cannot alter the chemical state of a metal object (e.g., she cannot melt it into liquid form). If she is controlling an object larger than one ton, she has to devote all her focus on it.
Ability 2: Camouflage. Peridot can alter the color of her body to blend in with her surroundings. She can do this indefinitely, but if she moves too quickly the image blurs and she could be spotted.
Faction: Crystal Gems (although she's not happy about it)
History:
Most Peridots are motivated by their loyalty to their Diamond. Not so for Peridot Facet-17C3V Cut-4XN. Sure, she followed Yellow Diamond faithfully and respected her, but she wasn't the reason why she did her job so well. The truth was, she simply loved gem creation. Being a Kindergartner was her pride and joy. Something about bringing new gems into the world, fresh out of the ground, ready to start their lives, filled her with fascination and exhilaration.
Not surprisingly, she was thrilled to be assigned to the earth colony. A whole new world full of energy and materials for making new gems. Due to her skill, she was assigned to the heart of gem production on earth: the prime kindergarten itself.
Some time after Rose Quartz relayed her message to the gems of earth, pleading with them to protect it, Peridot was going for a stroll through a human village near her station. She found humans interesting, and her scientific curiosity encouraged her to study them. While she was among the humans, a corrupted gem attacked. Peridot was horrified to see what was once a proud, fully-formed gem like herself twisted into a mindless monster. The beast suddenly rushed at her, but before it could strike her down, a human grabbed her and pulled her into the shadows. Together, they escaped to the man's house, leaving the corrupted gem in confused torment.
Back at the human's dwelling, there wasn't much time for introductions. The man had been on his way home to witness the birth of his child. Peridot watched, awestruck, as a new human being was brought into the world. Her entire perspective had been changed; not only had she been saved by a human, but she got to witness the creation of one. It fascinated her. She asked endless questions, and the humans' answers only made her more interested. She rushed back home to tell her fellow Peridots and other engineers/kindergartners what she'd discovered.
As soon as she stepped foot on the scarred, dead land of the Kindergarten, however, a thought struck her. What she was doing here would destroy all organic life on earth. These creatures, with their incredible lives and their amazing way of creating more of themselves, would soon disappear forever. Then she remembered Rose Quartz's plea, and she understood. She couldn't do this any longer. It wasn't fair to the life forms on earth. She must become a Crystal Gem.
Now Peridot fights Homeworld bearing a star on her olive green vest. She doesn't really care about individuality or freedom from the caste system, but she sides with the Crystal Gems because she believes it is the right thing to do. However, in doing so, she's had to give up her true passion. She will never be able to create new gems ever again. This has left her cold and slightly bitter. A part of her blames the other Crystal Gems for taking away her first love. She can tell that Homeworld and Earth will be at war soon, though, and her side is terribly outnumbered. Because of this, and due to her longing to once again take up her craft, Peridot is seeking new ways to create gems that won't damage the earth. If she is successful, she will add new numbers to the Crystal Gem effort, and protect the earth from destruction.
Character arcs:
1. As Peridot starts to make friends with other Crystal Gems, she will begin to warm up to them and stop blaming them for having to sacrifice her passion for gem creation.
2. Peridot will learn to cherish personal growth rather than focusing on creating new life and starting from scratch.
3. Peridot will tenaciously pursue her dream of creating new gems without damaging the earth. Whether or not this will happen remains to be seen, but her obsession will start to damage her relationship with the other Crystal Gems and her effectiveness as a teammate until she learns to prioritize, probably through an important choice she'll be forced to make.
