Esther kicked a can along the docks, armed with a camera. The fun thing about the humans was that she could get this green paper that she could exchange for goods and services. Well, sometimes it was green, sometimes it was blue, sometimes the back smelled like maple syrup if you scratched it just right. But if she went into their building called a "bank" then she could always get the right kind of money. That money was saved up until she one day had a camera.
She had long been fascinated by human photography. Humans, in the last century or so, had developed a new technology that allowed instant photographs to be taken. Humans turned it into art. It was one of the many niceties that the Humans had. Humans had an appreciation for beauty that was unmatched in any species she had seen in all her travels. Even as much as an outsider among the humans as she felt, she felt like far less of an outsider than she felt among Gems. The Earth Gems who had been on Earth for a considerable amount of time tended to be more Human-like in their appreciation of beauty. Homeworld Gems, though, were...different. "Utilitarian" would be the English word. It wasn't that Homeworld Gems were incapable of appreciating art, but they tended to not waste much time with it. So, photography existed but wasn't used in the way Humans used them.
It was amazing how Humans saw art in everything. She had seen art develop over several centuries on Earth, and she would never stop being in awe of it. Every new technology was soon turned into a new vector for expression in less time than it took to say, "This could make some good art." In comparison, it took Homeworld Gems far longer to consider using their new technology purely for expression.
Esther's mission on this trip? Learn about this photography nonsense. The Human currency that she had been collecting for centuries of doing odd jobs have amounted to a fortune, a fortune she used on getting a good-quality camera with a high shutter speed and a huge, detachable lens.
She had braved the nighttime to reach the docks by sunrise. She took the tripod, positioning herself carefully, and snapped a few photos of boats with the sunset in the background. She photographed the coast with the sun peeking over the horizon. She also had a backpack full of sketchbook supplies. Today would be a day she would spend on everything she loved.
