The travel to this place was short and silent, Pyrope carried Varis in her arms onto the warp pad of the Sea Spire only to quickly warp to the familiar sight of the Fountain. While she may have been silent Pyrope did glance down at him every so often to make sure he was alright. Although concerned she made an effort to uphold her usual glare, though it was a mockery of her usual stoic face, "You uh... holding it together?"
She continued on until they reached the base of the fountain itself, adamant that she hold onto him until then. At that point she gently set Varis onto his feet, making sure to keep him steady if he needed it, "Let's get you fixed up before you uh... nevermind. Just get in alright." By the tone of her voice it almost seemed as if she was being defensive, an embarrassed red barely visible on her cheeks.
Without lying, Varis wasnt the biggest fan of being picked up. Struggling for a moment, "Y-you really dont h-have too..." his cheeks flushing out a green tint. Why couldnt they have just punched him, no way the Quartz wasnt going to be fuming.
Before he really knew what was happening they had warped from the Spire to land back at Roses Fountain. This place had a special smell.. The feel of the air blowing through the grass. "Y-yea..." still felt a bit odd having anyone who really cared about how well he was holding up. "You know, your uh.. Both gonna get into some trouble for he-helping me." he held a weak smile, he was happy being with his friends but was upset over they might be throwing away their jobs for him.
Nodding to them when he was let back down to the ground, plopping down onto the railing around the water. Running his hand across the water slowly, his gem giving off this dim light as the small cracks and chips began to glow and repare.
"So..." he was glancing back at the water before looking at Pyrope, "Why did you do that?" it may have been driving Varis a bit insane, even m ore so knowing how set Pyre was on doing their duty.
Pyrope relaxed a bit once she saw Varis' wounds healed, although as usual she held a defensive stance with her arms crossed over her chest. Initially she almost seemed confused by his question, although it eventually clicked, "Oh, you mean uh..." she scratched the back of neck and averted her gaze, "Look, I sort of realized something back there. After seeing you willing to take a beating like that for me it dawned on he that..." at this point a deep flush was obvious across her cheeks and her voice was quiet, "I wasn't being a very good friend."
She let out a defeated sigh, "I'm sorry that I got you into trouble and didn't back you up, none of this drama would even be a thing had I just done something. I like you Varis, you're a good friend with a strong heart, I shouldn't have just stood by during everything. I know you would have done something had it been me."
Thinking about it now, this was not the first time he had to be carried to this place. Not too proud of that fact but normally it was followed by being with friends, which was always a plus. Looking at Pyrope with an almlst dumb look across his face, it was weird for him knowing the two that make up Pyrope, how well the two blend together.
He opened his mouth to speak but wanted to let them get out what they wanted to say before he spoke.
"N-no you werent! Really. I know its.. Weird yea? For you t-two this is what you do. Your a so-solider right? Your more of a gem then me, like b-both of you individually are more gem then me, heh.."
He rubbed the back of his neck looking away from Pyrope, looking back into the water. "Its f-fine, im just happy n-no one was hurt.. Other then myself but that ha-happens often..." he triled off towards the end... I like you too, even if you always have a grumpy look on your face." trying to lighten the mood, returning his gaze to them with a dopy grin.
Pyrope was quick to reassure Varis, "What? Don't be ridiculous, if there's one thing I've learned you're just as much of a gem as anyone else! Even if..." something struck her and she actually grew frustrated, "grrr, it's difficult for me to say this because it goes against everything I've been taught by Homeworld but..." she drew a sharp breath, "Even if you aren't some big shot quartz, you're twice the gem of anyone I've come across. That's why I was willing to risk my standing for you after all."
"You need to understand that yes, I am a soldier. From the very start I was taught to take orders as the came without question, and that sort of teaching doesn't just go away. I know you're big on this rebel business but... all I know is Homeworld. The rebels have never done well by me, especially not Pye. As far as I see it, the only capable hands are the Diamonds." She grew rather awkward at all this serious business, but it had to be said to avoid any further awkwardness between them.
"I'm only saying all this because I doubt this'll be the last time something like this might happened, but despite that I hope against reason that we can still be friends. We both hope we can stay friends." there was a brief pause... "Wait hold on, am I glaring all the time?! Gah, Pyre we talked about this!" She immediately spent a few moments observing how own reflecting in the fountain, poking at the edges of her mouth as if trying to fix it.
Varis had to take a moment.. Was he really a real gem? Crafted on this planet only to end up as a faulty gem, never saw his home planet. Yet Pyrope seemed so sure of herself that he really was a real gem.
"Thanks... I un-understand I think.." he paused for a moment to stand up, next to Pyrope. "Honestly I kinda just fell into the whole "Rebel" thing.. Fogured at this point its all I c-can do.. Alot of the new rebels are a bit much.. I ki-kinda feel like I didnt have alot of options. First ever Homeworld gems I met tried to sh-shatter me.. Figured there was no hope."
If he was being honest, Homeworld didnt seem so bad short of wanting to kill the planet, "Maybe one day.. I wont be st-stuck playing for one side that dosnt seem to want to protect anymore, th-they just want to fight Homeworld.. I dont want to fight anyone." taking a few steps away he stuffed his hands into his pockets.
"Id like it very much if we could stay friends.. All three of us, heh. Thats still a bit o-odd for me.." turning back to see Pyrope poking at her face, "Heh.. You do kinda always look pissed... Not that it looks bad!" rubbing the back of his neck, fingers running along his core.
Even with all that was said Varis couldnt help but wonder if he was on the wrong side of history.. Maybe he was, maybe a change might be needed.
Satisfied with her reflection turned back to Varis, notably she had what could almost be called a grin, "You know Varis, I think you and I aren't all that different. My- er... our first interaction with rebels went about as well. I think that's the case on both sides, gems all too willing to do something as final as shatter another gem. Honestly I don't care for fighting myself, I was made for protecting not attacking. If there was a way to end all of this peacefully that would have my full support." While she was growing bolder this whole conversation was still weird for Pyrope. She was pretty much coming to conclusions as she was saying them, breaching the subject of the war that she previously ignored in favor of her own seclusion.
"Maybe the two of us can do what we can on our respective sides to minimize the casualties. War might be coming, but maybe we can make it not so brutal. I'd hate to see good gems shattered for a pointless fight..."
Letting out a soft sigh, and a grin at Pyropes look she had across her face, "Perfect." he chuckled.
Pyrope was really a very smart gem in Varisictes eyes, they had a duty and strive to always complete their duty. Thats loyality which is what makes them such a good set of friends.. All three.. Of them?
"Wa-wait, me as in Pyrope.. Or Pyre? Or Pye.. I-im not really as cracky as Pyre. Though I see w-what you mean! It would most likely save alot of lives if w-we at least try." All this talk of war was starting to bum Varis out a bit, not really a topic he spoke much about if at all. "So pretty much next time I see you w-with other Homeworld gems, best bet is to just split? To be honest I saw all that g-going so much better in my head." he sat back down onto the railing of the foutian.
"Both of them you dolt. You should give Pyre some credit, he's actually pretty sweet once you get under that glare of his. Not that he'll admit that..." her face contorted to reflect what was likely a brief internal argument before returning back to normal, "Anyways, all we can do is try. The way I see it, even if we can save a single gem from am unfortunate end then we'll have done something worthwhile."
Things grew a little awkward for her as they finally got to the question she had been wondering. What should they do if a situation like that comes up again? This wasn't easy for either of them, having different affiliations complicated things. With a sigh she sat down next to Varis, "I'll be honest I don't really know. We both have a job to do, and when push comes to shove we might not be able to simply not act. Maybe we just take things as the come, yeah? Obviously I don't want to fight you, so let's just be careful and do what we can."
Pyrope let out a chuckle seemingly from nowhere, "Oh boy, I can't imagine what was going across your mind. I've never seen a gem so brave in such odds, aside from a quartz. And to willingly take a direct blow from a quartz soldier! Haha, you really are something else Varis." She gave him a friendly pat on the back, "I'm glad we ended up friends."
Chucking a bit, "Heh, thanks.. That does mean a-alot to me, coming from you, iv uh.. Lost alot of friends already but you th-three have always at least tried.. And st-stuck around.. Pyre included! Just... Well he f-for some reason makes me smilebwhen he is all buggin out, n-no disrespect! Lots of passion." he was looking away again, just thinking of Carbonado, Amber.. Hemi, Paris.. Too many good gems. He felt like Pyrope most likely has been through the ringer themselves.
"Thats really all we could do yea? Sh-short of leaving everything behind to start something new.. Which seems almost as im-possible. I dont wanna fight any of you either.. I wont." he seemed quite stern about not wanting to fight them.
Smiling at the sound of the chuckle, "Hey! I had no idea that a Quartz was l-like some kind of higher up! And I thought you were big.. Well a-and short at the same time." happy that even after everything they could all still laugh and relaxe like this.. But for how long? This was not a question he wanted to let burden his mind, or Pyropes.
Pyrope grew somber for just a moment, "Yeah I understand the feeling... a lot of good pyropes were lost a while back. I know how difficult it can be to deal with losing someone close. Heck, I nearly lost Pye back then. That was uh... tough." She was really awkward with these touchy-feely conversations but she as trying to make an effort, placing a hand on Varis' shoulder and giving him a comforting squeeze. "But we keep moving on, 'cause that's what we gems do. We survive."
"Hehe, I will admit that I find him kind of adorable when he's angry. There's something about his face when he gets all flustered that's just so lovable. Under all of it though he really does care, I think you've started to gather that."
She gave Varis a playful punch across the shoulder, "Hey, I'm not that short! Hehe but yeah, quartz soldiers are no joke. They're made for just about everything combat related, if you need something done and what to be sure nothing stays in your way you send a quartz. They're stubborn like that, willing to do anything to get the job done. Kind of why they're admired by gems like myself or rubies. They're elite fighters, a single one of them can equal a group of us." There wasn't any shame in her voice, it was as if she was simply stating facts as she saw them.
Just how they said it, "Alot of good Pyropes were lost.." its so weird to him to think that.. It almost seemed like losing yourself over and over. "Well.. If I have it my way, we wont lose anyone else.. I d-dont wanna lose a Pyrope.." he spoke very softly towards the end. Glancing at Pyrope when they place a hand on his shoulder, responded with a warm smile.
"Well its kinda funny that his uh, grumpy face always take over when you two are together, thought y-your smile would over power it more." taking the playful punch and almost fumbling back into the water but keeping himself planeted.
"Heh, you both are pretty short, I m-meet this other little red gem a bit ago, a R-Ruby? She made Pyre look at peace! She was about as short as you two. There are alot more gems showing up, think its for the better?"
He wanted to ask if she felt like the Rebellion was really helping the situation, or just making it worse.. Maybe another time, don't want to ruin the moment.
Despite the seriousness of the topic Pyrope couldn't help but laugh, "Yeah, I got no plans to leave any time soon. I'm afraid you and this planet are stuck with me for quite some time."
"You know that's the funny thing about fusion, it isn't so clear what traits are visible, y'know? It's a mix between the two of us, and Pyre is sort of... protective. And I mean that in a good way, don't get me wrong! But for the most part his defensive personality sorta just takes over for the most part. Better safe than sorry, that sorta thing. Maybe you're right though, maybe I should smile more." That grin seen briefly before popped up again, this time seemingly intent on staying.
"A ruby, really? They're an interesting bunch, kind of fun. Though they're not particularly... hmm how do I say this nicely. Let's just say they aren't the brightest hologram in the base. Not to mention they are real hot heads, quick to blow up at the slightest thing. I've actually worked with one or two of them, they tend to be a bit more mobile than us pyropes. They at least have some basic training in vehicle piloting, meaning their squads and be sent by themselves while we generally need to be deployed." her hands began to fidget as she thought about the situation, "I'm not sure actually, part of me worries that the more gems around the more risk of innocents being caught in the crossfire. But it's inevitable, things are heating up. Before long I imagine things will come to a head, only a matter of who lights the fuse."
She glanced up to the sky, "You know it's funny, a year or two ago I wanted nothing more than Homeworld come and to save us. Now... I kinda miss the quiet. Things were simple then."
The fact Pyrope was staying planet-side was indeed a nice boon, "Im glad.." he almost whispered this. He just sat happily for a moment while Pyrope spoke, all this was good stuff he wanted to know. "That's still really in-interesting, to be honest I know Pyre is a good fellow. Really seems like a gem y-you would wanna get stuck in a fight with." While he liked to poke fun at Pyre or Pye it was really just all in good fun. "I me-mean, you have a nice smile... I feel like Pyre has a n-nice one too if he ever used it, but I get it when uh... you don't have a lot to smile about." he couldn't help but smile again himself as Pyrope smiled.
"Yeah! They were short and really red... I found h-her outside of the warp stream. When I pulled her o-out she was really mad.. like teeth shatteringly mad! I didn't find out until she was trying to punch me that she lost her unit. I uh.. tried to help b-but she.. didn't want help from a Rebel. She ran off b-before I could really help.. I really hope they are safe.." Even not really knowing this Ruby he was not happy that he wasn't able to help her just because he was a Rebel. "I mean... I like you Pyropes a bit more, heh.." at this point he wasn't sure if he was annoying her with the complements or not.
He felt like Pyrope had a good point, all the gems might cause some issues... "Y-Yeah and uh... no offence but.. a lot of Homeworld gems.. l-like a lot. Its getting kind of h-hard for me to get around.." He stopped looking at Pyrope, as she glanced up and was looking down, "Yeah... I just want things to go back to the way before... I don't like b-be-being hunted.." again he was almost whispering this.. in a very hush-hush tone.
Her hand ran over the gem in her chest, "Yeah, trust me that he's the sort of gem to do anything to save his friends in a fight. If it wasn't for him Pye might not..." the thought drifted off with an awkward cough, "Even if we don't seem to have a lot to smile about there are some really nice things about this place, it aint all bad."
A bit of a funny expression came across her face, "Rubies are an odd bunch, when they get set off they often just stay like that. Best to just let them blow off some steam to be honest. Though I've known a few of them to occasionally be especially stubborn."
"I guess I never thought about that..." she glanced over to him, "You know when you're taught to be a soldier like me you don't really question your orders, you just do them. But I hate to think that gems like you are considered the enemy. Gem turned against gem... it just aint right. Not like this."

This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
All gems on earth are still stranded, the communication hub is still offline and all the space warps are shattered, it has now been revealed that this is the work of Rose Quartz and her small group known as the Crystal gems. They have rebelled against Homeworld and have chosen to protect the Earth (Trapping themselves on Homeworld to keep the warps down).
Now both sides are fighting among themselves along with fighting against the 'Corruption' a virus is infecting many gems turning most of them into mindless monsters, but those with a stronger will seem to becoming something more sinister.
The Game has changed now. The question has finally been posed, are you against Homeworld or allied with them. Or do you have your own agenda that may or may not been assisted by the ‘Corruption’.
