Howlite texted Variscite to meet him at Mask Island. He had another training session for her. This was not like last time. She did very well but that lesson was taught. Now she needed a new one. He simply stood there by the warp pad. No hiding. No ambush. In one hand, he held a bottle of wine and in the other he had his rifle resting on his shoulder. He tapped his foot as he waited. He looked forward to this lesson. He had spent a lot of time teaching her how to fight him. Now she was gonna learn how to work with him. If she passed he had a reward in mind. All in due time. All in due time. Soon the warp pad began to light up.
Brilliant light shone around Variscite's eyes as she opened them. The shape of Howlite was visible through the translucent rays of energy. Soon Varisicte physical body took form on the platform, she then stepped off of it curious for whatever her mentor had in store for her.
"So... what is this new lesson you spoke of. I am prepared for any hurdle you wish me to overcome, and actually eager to do so."
Varisicite smiled genuinely and then looked at the scenery. Mask Island trulely was beautiful. The light of the new day was refracted as its beams entered the crystalline structures. The light bended as and diffracted itself in several different directions. The water glistened with magnificence. One who gazed into it and saw their own reflection would feel as if they were looking at an alternate version of their self, and could not help but wonder what the story of this reflection truly was.
Howlite smiled. "Hey Varis. Today's lesson is a tad different than usual. Up to this point, I have pitted you against me. We're a team. We need to work together. So today's lesson is very simple. You're going to hunt with me. But remember I do not like to shatter. If you do shatter them please do it away from me however I would prefer that you don't. Then we can reuse our prey. "He took a sip of wine and stored it back in his gem. Then he pulled his hood up over his head and crouched down. "Let's go. Keep your body low and move silently." He slowly moved into the bushes. The nearby shrubbery was like a cloak for the 2 gems to use. Eventually a corruption appeared that resembled a wildebeest. It stopped by s lake for a drink. "Wait until it's distracted. I'll go left. You go right. We strike as one. Understood?"
She liked the idea of working with Howlite. It was true that she would rather practice fighting him to improve her own ability, however this work presented a whole new challenge entirely.
Variscite appreciated Howlite's view on shattering gems. She was puzzled by the idea of shattering them at all. In her solo gem hunts, the female gem had only poofed the corrupted gems she defeated, thus proving that she was the stronger predator, and then left them where they were beaten, in hopes that they would one day challenger her again so she could beat them once more. Shattering the beast-like gems meant reducing her supply of punching bags. However she would do so if it pleased her master. Yet, since her mentor expressed disapproval to the idea, so did she.
Variscite snuck as quietly as she could to the right side of the beast. She stopped when she was as close as she could be without alerting the creature, and then proceeded to extend her grapples ever so slowly. When the corruption bent down to take another sip of water, the stealthy gem prepared to dig her hooks into the nearest tree. She waited for Mentor's signal.
Howlite watched Varis go towards the trees. As she did, he went under the water. Like a crocodile, he swam just underneath the drinking wildebeest. This was it. He simply had to wait until the right moment to strike. Varis was at a distance so if he could pin the beast, she could poof it with her grapples nice and clean. Soon after a pause, Howlite lunged out of the water and took hold of the beast. He wrapped his arms around it's neck and straddled it's back to hold it down. Now Variscite had a clear shot. Suddenly the wildebeest bolted, talking Howlite with him. "Varis! A little help please!" The beast was running with Howlite dragging underneath it. Effectively being trampled under it's hooves.
Variscite was shocked by the whole encounter. Even so, she launched her grappling hooks into a near by tree and pulled herself to it. The collected hunter then extended her legs, pushing off of the tree with the aid of her weapons and using her obtained momentum to reach another tree. The agile gem lunged from tree to tree, darting around stumps and other shrubs as she grappled from one tree to another, or propelled herself to a higher place to gain a bird's eye view of the situation below.
The gem soon felt comfortable extending her grapple its full seventeen feet to pierce the hide of the wildebeest. Yet, to her surprise, it sensed her presence and began to zig zag through the moving trees with her mentor still underneath.
Variscite grunted in irritation and allowed herself to be taken low to the ground. She timed her second launch perfectly and stuck her hook in the side of the frantic corruption. The cautious gem immediately began to reel herself in, closing distance between herself and her prey.
Howlite managed to get on top of the corruption. He grabbed it by the horns. "I'll teach you to humiliate me in front of her!" He pulled out Variscite's hooks so she wouldn't get hurt from what he was about to do. He leaped off the beast while still holding on to its horns. He planted his feet on the ground and the beast flipped up over him. Howlite then rolled out of the way as the beast crashed into the ground and poofed. He brushed himself off and looked at Variscite. "Sorry about that. Usually these things go much smoother. I guess this one had been hunted before. Oh well. Let's pick our next target. I'll let you choose our next hit."
Variscite was surprised when Howlite suddenly took her hooks out of the creature. Nonetheless, she remembered her mentor's words. He had told her to always be open for improvising, for the unexpected. The disconnected tracker rotated her body, as she was currently upside down. Just before smashing head first into the ground and having her neck twisted, Variscite planted her feet firmly on the ground. Because of the large amount of momentum she possessed at the moment, the gem's feet slide and lost footing as her body continued its motion. Variscite summersaulted until she came to a stop and saw Howlite coming up to her. He had bested the beast.
"Understood Mentor." Variscite said happily. When she was in Howlite's company, the depressed gem actually didn't feel that bad.
Howlite smiled when he saw that Variscite was happy. He liked making her happy. Perhaps if we'd met on better circumstances we would be closer. She's probably the one victim I regret torturing. But why? I've tortured friends before and got nothing but pleasure. Perhaps I am growing soft after all. Or maybe it's something else entirely. He dismissed his thoughts then looked at his student. "You spot anything yet? Make sure it's a challenge for us. It wouldn't be fun if it was easy." This is nice. Just Varis and me hunting together. Not worrying about work or the blasted war or anything else. If only the others would join meso willingly. She's probably the only one who understands me.
Variscite looked around. The trees were still luscious and green, yet parts of the palms and other exotic trees had turned a light brown. Upon further observance, the nature-loving gem found that ants, avoids, tomato worms, large animals, and other similar creatures had consumed parts of the large, green leaves. This had cut off the flow of chlorophyll and precious sugars from the rest of the tree via its veins.
The organic tree was probably the saddest form of live to exist on earth. Pests devoured its parts, and yet the beast could do nothing to defend itself. It was weak, and yet the seeds scattered from the pathetic shrubs by animals occasionally landed on good soil and gave way to more trees. Despite their weakness, plants flourished on this planet, nearly to an unstoppable degree. Nature was fascinating.
Finally, the observant gem's eyes fell on a large bird-like corruption.
Howlite beamed as Variscite saw the bird. "Good job Varis! You're a natural hunter! I'm proud of you!" He then drew his rifle and took aim. He looked at Variscite in the corner of his eye. "As soon as it drops, I need you to hook it so that you can pull it towards us. I don't want it to land a mile away. It'll take forever. You got it? Get ready." He lined up his shot. "3, 2, now!" He pulled the trigger and the bullet struck it's gem causing a small crack. It slowly fell towards the ground. It wasn't poofed but it could no longer fly due to the gem being on it's back. As it plummeted, Howlite hoped Variscite was strong enough to pull the bird down.
The large bird squaked as it fell down to the floor. Before it reached its destination, Variscite dashed out to meet it. She ran under the gem and summoned her weapons, intending to wrap up the prize and either poof or shatter it from there.
However, when the anticipating gem readied her arms to catch the corrupt bird, it's beak pealed back, revealing several rows of human teeth. Soon the beast turned inside out and warped to the point it had transformed into a monster resembling a dog. The beast had nearly one hundred eyes, and lacked fur. It was pale white and transparent, with alien-like features.
The beast lunched at Variscite, but failed to evade her kick after missing her. After receiving a wound, the hound-like corruption spewed acid from all of its pores. This attack was unavoidable with Variscite's current skill level. She was struck down by shower after shower of nearly leathal acid droplets.
"As burning acid melted countless holes in her body, Variscite came to the conclusion that she had never experienced this level of inhumane physical pain and agony since her time Chalcedony."
As Variscite screamed, Howlite leaped into the way. She was now fine but his form was horribly sizzling. He wasn't near as durable as Variscite but he had enough determination to ignore most injuries. Sure he was badly damaged but he wouldn't let that stop him. He fired a bullet at the hound but it simply bounced off it's gem as if it were a steel plate. His jaw dropped. He then turned to Variscite. "Run! I'll distract him. You need to survive. I don't. Run! Sulfur will train you once I'm dead. Just run! Save yourself!" He then charged at the beast. The hound spit out even more acid. At this point, the left half of Howlite's body was completely burned off. He looked like 2 face from Batman. He began to run a tad slower but then the hound smacked him, causing him to fly off landing next to Variscite. "I... Can't... Stop.. him. Alone at least. Neither can you. We're dead." He tried to think. There had to be something. Suddenly an idea clicked into his head. "but maybe something else can fight it. Or rather someone. I'm going to suggest something but just know that you don't have to if you don't want to." He paused for a moment. "We could fuse."
Variscite's mind started to blur with rage as she thought about all that had just transpired. It was too much to keep up with.
Howlite thought Variscite would leave him to be shattered by this deceitful corruption, no way. He charged into battle and risked great pain on his behalf to save her. This was a true sacrifice. An indicator of loving character in this twisted world. Like a light faintly glimmering in an ocean of darkness, Howlite, all that he was, would soon be swept away. I will not allow that to happen. Yet how would they stop such a powerful monster? Fuse?
Variscite remembered her countless experiences with false forced fusion before. She had been violated by the evil that was fusion so much that she felt the kindness she once had would have to have all but rotted away. Somehow though, the miserable gem felt that fusing with Howlite would feel different. He was practically a close person to her, even a friend. No. Why had she not seen it before. Howlite was, and had always been, her friend!
Variscite gritted her teeth and began to stand. A disgusting grin was plastered on her face, mixed with a gapping hole in her cheeks which seemed to symbolize the endless, black despiration she felt now as hundreds of different screams bombarded her mind, unhinging her sanity.
"No... I... I won't let Howlite DIIIIEEE!!!"
Variscite bent backwards on her spine and sprinted full force into the corruption. She slashed repeatedly with her grapples, landing seven strong hits per second on the dog-like being. As its own flesh began to tear, hundreds of small, red cords wrapped around Variscite, they were the texture of veins and had the said appearance. Despite this, they were as strong as steal, moving through Variscite's body like tunneling worms move through a corpse. Variscite really looked dead now, but she tore herself out of the creature and bit into its stomach, beginning to devour parts of the monster. It pulled away and most of her teeth came out. Then the hound seemed to grow in size. It back came two meters off the floor and from head to tail, it was at least four meters. It shot out two extra legs and several blood red, insect-like appendages burst out of its dry and leaking skin. The near demonic being impaled Variscite's arms and legs each with a different appendage and several bloody insect arms to dig out the female gem's essential organs and large intestines. It threw the living corpse into a tree. The screaming gem hung in a nose of her own intestines until she broke free with her grapples. When the gem fell, she broke thirteen bones in her body including both shins and femurs.
The unfortunate fighter lay in a puddle of her own fluid. Her body was broken. No matter how hard she willed herself to defeat her enemy, she could do nothing. The gem was mauled and mutilated to the point she could hardly be recognized as anything more than piece of raw meat. Basically, she felt terrible. Laughing, crying, and screaming all at once, the broken gem (pun intended ) turned her pupiless eyes until they rolled to the back off her head, looking at Howlite.
Although she could not see him, she felt him; felt him forgiving her for being weak. Her Mentor really was the best. It was true that most gem's needed to preform a dance in sync to fuse properly, but sometimes simple emotions could do the trick in a dire situation, such as this one.
It was hard to tell since his face was halfway gone but he was smiling. He was proud of his student. He reached over and clasped her shoulder. Light began to envelop and pool together. They had fused. Everything Variscite had ever been through, he saw it all. And vice versa. She now has a view of Howlite's pure insanity. Their minds were both horribly scarred. But together they shared the pain. The fusion finally took shape. It was a monster.
It spoken in a horribly mangled voice.
"It worked! By stars the power! It's incredible! Hmmm.... I wonder."
It reached for it's gem and summoned a crossbow.
"Oh I could work with this. Yes."
It pulled out an arrow and loaded it into the bow.
