Sulfur didn't get a response, but Howlite wasn't attacking. He considered that Howlite may simply not want to break song. Sulfur watched Howlite's vibrant leaps about as he sang. Watching Howlite Sulfur decided that he could simply wait for Howlite to reform after the fight. It would be fun to have a little duel. Sulfur sat still until Howlite moved into a defensive stance. He then ran toward Howlite with his swords behind him.
"You know who I am... You know what I do...and if you think you've got this then I have news for youuu..." Sulfur said, nearing Howlite. "Because I've got this feeling... that you didn't think this through... You can't get past my guard... now come and face your doom!"
He darted around Howlite, swinging both blades behind him. Sulfur swung both blades forward and into Howlite's back.
Howlite chuckled as the blades came. He did a backflip and landed behind the blades. "Go ahead and try to hit me if you're able. Obviously you know my mind's unstable. But my weakness makes me an expert with my table. I know you made my best friend disappear but everything you see in me is why I'm here. I seek power. I seek vengeance. I seek retribution! I know you're made ooooof loooove. Loooove. But I think I'm stronger than you!" He swung his rifle like a bat towards Sulfur's head.
"Don't even try to hit me you're unable, I can see that your stance is quite unstable!" Sulfur sang. He grabbed the rifle midair and twisted it which would either painfully twist Howlite's arm or disarm the rifle. He broke the rifle on his knee, it would be restored when resummoned. Sulfur then leapt into the air. He began a combo leading with his right sword, turning midair. His left blade came next, then two roundhouse kicks followed midair, right foot then left foot. The entire combo was about a second long. "I'll make your friends all disappear, but I'm the reason you're still here, I fight for bloodlust I fight for revenge I fight for the sensation! I can't be made, ooooof loooove... looooove! And I think it's stronger than you!"
In case Howlite had survived the combo, Sulfur had a backup plan. As Sulfur finished, the three blades that had burrowed into the sand emerged under Howlite, attempting to pierce his core.
Suddenly Sulfur hit Howlite with everything he had. He got kicked and sliced at break neck speeds. Howlite just chuckled. "You always were the best at what you do." Then his form exploded as his blue gem hit the ground. Most gems would be upset about this. But Howlite had so much fun! He knew that he'd walk away from this so he had nothing to worry about. He'd just simply wait for his form to regenerate and hope that Sulfur would still be there once he did. On the plus side he also had plenty of time for reflection. To think about what he's done. And what he's supposed to do now.
Sulfur had defeated Howlite with his attack. Most gems would be happy about this, but Sulfur felt disappointed.
"Better than your average Howlite... but he just can't compete with Chal." Sulfur said, looking at the beach. He mused over his old nemesis and the battles they would have. He hated Chalcedony, but he liked power. This could have been why he was so interested in Smoky Quartz, the most powerful Quartz he had seen.
Sulfur sat, crossing his legs, as he watched the waves. He had continued to activity he had been doing before Howlite arrived. As he waited for Howlite to reform his thoughts went back to his past and to his loss. He remained absolutely silent for hours.
After several hours Howlite was back on his feet. His form slowly appeared. He laughed. "Now THAT was fun!" He then realized Sulfur wanted quiet again. He immediately stopped talking. He slowly walked over and sat down next to him, staring at the ocean. He felt that perhaps one day, Howlite would be able to be on par with Sulfur. Most likely not. But then again he has held his own own against Quartzes. So there may be hope. Howlite then began to think of all that Sulfur had done for him. He then made a silent vow. That any threat to his new group would be on his table.
"Now let me give you an analysis on how you fought... Human music is an art I believe that we both appreciate and enjoy... but in a battle you should not sing, it weakens your performance... by a small degree to be sure but that small degree may turn the tides against a fair opponent. Of course it wouldn't have mattered if you were singing or not in our duel... this is only for the future."
Sulfur said, waving his arm as he spoke.
"As far as your attacks, gain distance. Your speed and accuracy were impeccable, putting you on par with an average Howlite, maybe a notch above. Still, you have a ranged weapon and should take advantage of it. I usually conserve my best attacks for later, that is why my attacks consisted of mostly melee. You do deserve recognition for your performance if you believe that being defective is a problem."
Howlite gleamed as Sulfur gave him praise. No one had every done that for him. Then he mentioned his defect. "Well actually I think it's a double edged sword. You see my ability to think for myself makes me very good at what I do. It lets me do as I please and not like listening to authority such as the Diamonds. On the other side of things, my ability to think for myself made me an outcast on Homeworld. The only reason they let me live was because I was better than Howlites at my job and they couldn't replicate me. Because I killed the Peridot who made me not only did I lose the ability to learn why I'm defective but I also took away Homeworld's ability to discard me. Thanks for the tips. I'll be sure to commit to them."
Sulfur looked at Howlite with the corners of his eyes as he did often.
"Now I see how I can train you... all gems can improve their tactics as they train, but almost any gem has a limit. You cannot infinitely gain power... being a Howlite you may not be able to use your power to your advantage when fighting powerful foes... You see, the thing about powerful foes is that they usually get their strength from too much training or from dumb luck..."
Sulfur laid back on the sand.
"What I can train is your mind... you shattered the first gem you saw... you need to be more crafty. At any rate, I can teach you how to be a clever thinker. All of the training in the world will not benefit you as much as knowledge. I am a strong gem, but I am never going to be as strong as a Quartz knight, I have however, defeated one. When you can't compete with their brawn... you can always compete with their brain..."
Howlite nodded. "I believe I understand. Let's go see him! I'm sure he's gonna love me!" Howlite looked forward to seeing this Quartz. Sulfur seemed eager for Howlite to meet him so it made him want to find out why. If this Quartz had poofed Sulfur.... He hoped it wouldn't come down to a fight or he'd be done for. He took one last look at the beautiful island. It was so primitive and peaceful. He'd have to come here again sometime. This place could definitely be nice vacation spot. Given that people don't find out about it.
Sulfur gave a worried look when Howlite wasn't looking. His affiliate was toast... but Sulfur had salvaged himself... perhaps he was brilliant enough to salvage Howlite as well. Without any words Sulfur lead Howlite to the warp pad. As the light enveloped them Sulfur started to speak.
"I will be fetching my limousine for us to ride on the way there. It is quite expensive, do not eat any human food inside. There is no point in 'travel in style' if the limo is a mess if you follow. Now let's be off, we cannot be late on your first meeting with the Quartz."
They then warped off. The grass on the island waved as the gust of wind passed over them from the warp.
