It was obvious by her expression that Pye wasn't believing anything about 'back-flops', though she did laugh and playfully splash him back. The playful tone slowly died down however at the mention of the rebellion, and the possible surrender (or truce) involved. Then there was the accusations of fusion... that was serious. Being a loyalist she was very aware of the opinions on fusion, especially cross-gem fusion. She stammered for a few moments, looking to Varis as if to ask what to say, before thankfully being interrupted by Lapis.
Shortly behind Lapis was Pyre, who looked suspicious of the whole situation. With a glance he could clearly tell Pye was distressed, so he moved in to draw the attention off of her, "Greeting ma'm, I am Pyrope cut 43AQ, companion to Pyrope cut 23CD here. If you wish you may call me Pyre." he looked at Varis, glancing to Pye as if to hint for him to step in, "I see you have met this Variscite as well."
As for Lapis, he left her introduction to herself. He was still trying to figure out whether to trust her or not, he wasn't about to introduce or vouch for them in front of a rather important looking gem.
Variscite watched Pye and Disthene spoke, turning to Lapis as she... walked along the water? That's a new one for him to be honest but at this point it wasn't too surprising anymore, seeing a gem with such a cool ability. Moving back a bit into the water when Lapis dropped into the water, "Oh! U-Uh... hey. That's pr-pretty cool! You can walk on water?" he asked smiling a bit.
"I'm Varis, h-have you been in Beach City for long?" He asks the watery gem. He knows he had been all over the place lately and hasn't spent much time in Beach City as he usually had done in the past, things were changing and he wanted to know who was coming and going.
Spotting the look Pyre had shot him, "Sorry, one moment..." he mumbled politely to Lapis as he trudged though the water to meet up with the small cluster of gems, "Y-yep! Disthene kind of... had a rough landing, yea? I happened t-to be in the area when she um.. touched d-down.. everything is uh... f-fine right Dis? Er.. Madam Disthene?" he asked rather nervously as he straightened himself out, he didn't know much about fusion in general let alone how Homeworld really viewed them, only second hand information and guess-work.
Disthene turned her head towards the pair that arrived, taking in Lapis' profession of their fusion combination, Varis' stammered comments, but most importantly--listened to Pyre's straight forward, no nonsense introduction. She tilted her umbrella back, relaxing somewhat. "Well met. I am Diplomat Disthene," she repeated herself for those who finished off their little setting of Gems, " Of the Kyanite cluster. Well met Pyropes Pyre and Pye. I have no quarrel with your fusion. Greetings to you as well, Water Gem." Disthene's umbrella twinkled out of existence, allowing her to once again give her Diamond Salute.
"My landing was indeed difficult, but the timing was fortuitous. I was able to meet Gem Leader Variscite within seconds of my arrival, which allowed me to gain a head start on my job. Part of which is to make sure all stranded Gems are seen to and accounted for." A genuine smile crossed her blue lips, and Disthene knelt into the surf once again, letting the salt water lap at her spotted legs. Her attention turned back to the tiny crab, picking it up into her deep cobalt hand. "My understanding is that in times of difficulty, it is better to band with one's own stone for protection and comfort. I am sure you understand that it may be looked down upon by more astringent officers of the Diamonds' court."
Lapis looked over to Disthene, smiled, and waved. "Hi, I'm Lapis." She said, having forgotten that she still needed to salute.
Continuing to listen to her, she tilted her head in slight confusion at Disthene's mention of Varis and asked " 'Gem Leader?' " She was about to inquire further, but her attention was suddenly caught by Disthene picking up the crab out of the corner of her eye. While Disthene continued to talk, Lapis hurried curiously out of the surf to inspect the creature she had picked up, having to stand on her tip-toes to get a better look at it in Disthene's hand. She poked at it once before something else Disthene mentioned had registered in her mind. She looked to Pye and Pyre. "Wait, the Diamond's gems don't like other gems fusing?"
The relief felt by both pyropes was almost palpable, the two of them sharing a subtle sigh of relief at their fusion not causing any conflict. Both were uncertain how a higher ranking gem would react, and so far things were going well. At the mention of 'gem leader' however both were rather surprised, though it was Pyre who spoke up, "Gem... leader...?" He gave Varis a look that was some cross between shock and murderous intent. His first thought was as a soldier, that he had been so close to defeating the leader of the Crystal Gems! Imagine the tale of a little pyrope being the one to do the job, the favor from the Diamonds he would receive...
But rather quickly those thoughts faded as logic asserted itself, although he was not proud of his initial thoughts. But it wasn't really his fault, it was the soldier programming deep within his core. Still, it was one thing to befriend a rebel (it dawned on him, had he really befriended a rebel?) but a whole different matter to be friends with the leader of their group. "That honestly surprises me..."
It was Pye, undistracted my murderous thoughts, who mentioned the second (and arguably more important) part of what Disthene said, "So... Homeworld is collecting stranded gems? That's actually great to hear, I thought we had all been forgotten down here."
They both nodded at her warning however, that other gems of a similar authority may look down on their... 'habits'. Pyre looked to Lapis, "Fusion of any kind is a difficult topic. Generally it is not meant for anything outside of combat. Usually." he couldn't help but glance at Pye, a bit of an unspoken understanding between them.
It was still odd to hear that, he didn't particularly like to think about it, it was still fresh to him but he was slowly feeling like he saw settling into it. Helping Disthene set up in Beach City was a very good call, beneficial to both sides of the 'dispute'. He snapped back from his little daze though when he noticed that more then one set of eyes had been looking at him for a moment after being outted as the Leader of a Rebel Faction of gems.
"Its pretty new... like really n-new." He said specifically looking at Pyre.. whom he could almost feel the heat radiating off of like a revving engine, with a shrug.
Turning his attention quickly to Lapis, "Yeah.. so if you have any questions about the Crystal Gems, I can help w-with that." he offered giving her a friendly nod. Varis noticed Disthene kneeled into the water and couldn't help but think that was a pretty good idea, slowly leaning back before plopping semi-softly into the water, splashing out a bit and creating ripples through the waters.
"So you think that gems like Pye and Pyre can go back home soon?" he asks Disthene. While it would be a lie to say he wanted to see them go, but who was he to stand in the way of what they want, right?
"Hello Lapis. I am Diplomat Disthene." She addressed the blue chirpy one first, giving her a small smile before continuing on after Lapis' query. " Fusion isn't necessarily seen as a good thing, no. But given the extreme circumstances of the current situation, understandable. I imagine when it isn't needed for survival or fighting, Pye and Pyre will find themselves using it less and less." The crab in Disthene's hand scuttled about in her palm. It curled it's legs in at Lapis' prodding, waving about a claw to warn off danger.
"I no longer have the ability to ship gems off-world, Gem Leader Variscite. My ship is gone. What I can do though is create a database of those who wish to return to Homeworld. As soon as my console is repaired, I will send the list to my superiors and they can begin the process of sending those loyal to Homeworld home. I'm sorry I cannot fix the situation right away." She apologized to the twin Pyropes. "But I can do my best to be sure your concerns are heard and sent through the appropriate channels."
Lapis responded to the crab's warning with a little smile, and waved back to it. That's what it was trying to do, right? yeah. She turned her attention back to the rest of the group. "Well, in the meantime Earth isn't the worst planet to be stuck on—I think. I've only ever been here, but... I mean... surely there must be planets made of fire or something." She looked down at herself, as if she accidentally grabbed her own attention with this thought. "I wouldn't want to be stuck there. Ruby might, but..." She looked up again casually. "Anyway, I wouldn't expect Homeworld and Crystal Gems to have peace talks by the ocean." She looked over at Varis and Pyre. "Or in the ocean, but I can see the appeal. Can I watch?" Without further questions, she sat down cross-legged right where she was standing in front of Disthene and watched them.
Pyre calmed down as the moments passed, somewhat confused that leadership in the Crystal Gems seemed so fluid. For as long as recorded history (as far as he knew) the Diamonds had always been in control, and to think that leadership changed as all was... interesting.
The reactions from the two red gems were... mixed. Disthene's comment about them fusing less and less was complex point of interest, as they both knew well enough it wouldn't be the case. At least, hopefully. What Homeworld might do to them if they went back was still up in the air, though they both had their fears.
Their reactions to Disthene's second comment however was far more uniform, both sharing a look that said something along the lines of 'typical bureaucrats'. Pye did speak up, "It's fine, I'm sure you're doing everything you can miss. We'll be happy to do our part here planetside until then."
She then looked to Varis, "I hope it wasn't your intention for this to become some sort of peace talk, we're here for fun aren't we? It's time to relax before Pyre and I go on another mission." she turned to Disthene, "You should come join us in the water, if it would please you of course."
Varis had to take a few moments to take it all in, Lapis seemed content just watching the talks, Madem Disthene also seem quite calm about everything but that was almost to be expected honestly. She was a rathwr mellow gem which was a nice change in pace when it comes to Homeworld gems. The news of how she wouldn't be able to start helping Homeworls gems return home just yet was also kinda nice... He wouldn't admit it outloud just yet but it made him happy knowing his friends would be hanging out a bit longer. "T-Thats fair... I did watch your ship uh.. Crash.."
He stopped when Lapis spoke and made him think about a whole planet of fire, "Yea, ima pass on that planet too, not my speed heh." A soft grin crossed his face as he looked from Lapis around to the other gems. "Well.. I mean your here already, why not? B-but does that mean you dont have a side?" He asks lapis this question before, "I hope it wasn't your intention for this to become some sort of peace talk-" Pye started asking Varis which only made him rub the back of his head, "Uhhh.. I mean.. I didnt plan on peace talks.. Just figured Madem Disthene here could t-take you two home... Im cool with just hanging back in the waters."
Varis grinned softly still as he leaned back into the water and floads on his back for a bit.. They were right, this was a perfect time to just sit back and relaxe, but he couldnt help but wonder what other missions that Pyrope had in the works.
