Dark walked up the steps and into the floating arena. The place where so many honored gems had met their match. However, Dark had only witnessed a couple of gems even come here in the last couple years. Homeworld Gems had no use of the place, and Crystal Gems had no intention of fighting each other. Broken Gems however, they could make use of the arena. For training, among other things. But today it would be used to test someones skills. And to see how attached to someone they could become. A Broken Gem had to make use of gems. But if they were useless they would have to get rid of them. Dark had no intention of getting rid of someone today. But he would have to see if someone else was ready to do the task. Dark pulled out the phone he had been given by Sulfur upon their first encounter. Just looking at it brought back memories. That was back when he was a Crystal Gem himself. He should've been independent then. But there was strength in numbers. A lesson he had learned the hard way. Dark opened messages and texted Howlite. Hey, I'm at the Sky Arena. Can you meet me there? And bring your student. I need some help with her initiation. Dark sent the text and then sat at the edge of the sky arena's entrance so he could see the warp-pad. Howlite had always snuck up on Dark when he arrived. But this time Dark refused to let Howlite surprise him.
Turquoise beams enveloped Variscite as she began to step off of the warp pad, a truly marvelous invention at that.
Soon the curious gem began to walk into the beckoning light of the arena. Somehow, the female gem sensed a foreboding atmosphere about the place. It was a test. Variscite felt a dark smile peel back her lips. Now was a chance to show the Broken Gems a glimpse of her worth. Although Variscite did not entirely understand their cause, she had gotten to know Howlite and Sulfur really well, especially Howlite.
Variscite walked a full circle around the arena before she zeroed in on Dark Spinel.
As the green gem approached him she began to speak.
"Greetings. I do not doubt you remember me from our last meeting. Now... in this place... I, Variscite, am ready to prove my worth to you."
A loud, demonic laugh could be heard as the warp pad activated. Howlite appeared at the arena and had a sadistic grin on his face. He looked at Dark.
"Just had to ruin the surprise huh? I was looking forward to another ambush. Oh well."
He cracked his neck when Variscite introduced herself.
"Yes. My student is far more capable than any other Variscite. And I should know. I've hunted them. None were anywhere close to her current level. I have trained her well. She is ready for any challenge you give her. I don't suppose we're fighting corruptions are we? No.... That seems counter intuitive. What do you have planned? Be sure to make her opponent worthy of he skill."
Dark Spinel stood up jumped down from his resting spot. As he hit the floor he sat crouched on the floor for only a moment before picking himself up. He walked towards the two gems.
"Hello Howlite, long time no see." Dark grinned as he addressed the blue gem. He then turned to the green gem with a friendly smile. "Good to see you Variscite. I'm glad we'll finally be able to get underway with your test. Follow me." Dark jumped back up to the higher level. And motioned for them to follow. Had they followed him he would then walk into the sky arena carefully jumping onto the ground once again. Dark walked into the center and looked back to confirm that they were still there.
Variscite grinned kindly at Howlite when he spoke to her and nodded respectfully in response to Dark.
When he headed to the center of the arena, she came too. The whole place emanated the nearly tangible feeling of 'trial.' Her heart began to pump faster and faster with anticipation and excitement. However, excitement was only the outside screen she used to describe how she felt.
In honest truth, Variscite was full of anger and dread, which was accompanied by the constantly present loneliness howling through the crevices of her heart.
The tragic gem only accepted challenges to further her own twisted purposes, purposes that were sadly intended for good... yet what would really come of this restless gem; never ceasing to fight, strive and suffer.
Somehow the anguish she felt every day only grew worse and worse by the second, like a condemned person burning up in the flames of hell, unable to turn back from their wicked ways, but instead falling deeper and deeper into a dark, burning abyss forever... never coming back.
"what the hell happened to you anyway? We all looked for you and couldn't find you. I myself searched a couple continents. Africa, Europe, Asia, and most of North America. Couldn't find you. Not even with Tracker Vision. I'm glad you're back. Now our family is complete. There's a few things I need to bring you up to speed on. But I can do it later. "
He pulled out a beer and offered one to each of his friends. Then he grabbed one for himself and drank it down. After finishing the bottle, he had an idea. He sprinted off and stopped at the edge of the sky arena. He pulled out his cellphone and set it to stopwatch. He dropped the bottle over the edge and watched it fall. Once it hit the ground he stopped the timer. He turned to his apprentice.
"10,000 feet. That's how high we are Varis. Try not to fall. "
"I'm sure we can discuss what happened to me later. But now we must start your initiation Variscite."
Dark pushed away Howlite's drink offering. Human food and drink still disgusted Dark on a certain level. And he winced as Howlite put the weird liquid into his mouth. But now it was time for Variscite's initiation. And Dark had quite an opponent prepared for her. Dark became invisible and walked up to Howlite at the edge of the arena and whispered in his ear so Variscite wouldn't hear. "Just play along." Then, hoping that Howlite had heard him, walked up the steps onto a platform where he had a view of the entire battlefield, or what was left of it anyways, and became visible once again.
"Now Variscite, being a Broken Gem means many different things. But one of the main things you have to know, is when someone has outgrown their usefulness you forget everything you've felt for them. All sense of meaning and friendship. And you get rid of them. And Howlite, may have just accomplished that feat.. Veriscite, bring me Howlite's gemstone. And be quick about it..."
Variscite still was unsure about the strange taste of Howlite's beverages. Yet she drank it nonetheless to avoid looking impolite and ungreatful in front of her Mentor.
As she drank, Variscite imaginied liquid catchup mixed with warm vomit. The drink seemed to taste somewhat like this.
When the dark spinel disappeared from sight, the female gem raised her eyebrows ever so slightly and tried not to emote as she drank the rest of her human liquid whatever-it-was; throwing the empty bottle off of the edge as her superior had just done.
Ten thousand feet! Even I, an impact enduring variscite, cannot survive a fall from this height.
When Dark told Variscite to poof Howlite she went completely silent. Useless? How was Howlite possibly useless. Had he done something? She knew Howlite was not on the best terms with their leader right now, and thus, maybe not on the best terms with the broken gems either. But...
"......Dark." A twisted grin began to form on the green gem's face.
"I understand that an order from you is almost equal to an order from our master himself, but... heheh... Sulfur assigned me specifically under Howlite's care, meaning he is my superior, and I, his subordinate. Poofing this gem, even If I am not sure you will shatter him would mean I turn on him and place him in danger of being shattered..."
Variscite began to approach Dark slowly.
"Now Sulfur... he would poof and maybe shatter me for this. In best summary, what I am trying to say is that I doubt Sulfur would call attacking Howlite with out his consent anything but treason. So... I am left with one option."
Variscite's eyes twitched as she summoned her gem weapons and lunched toward Dark.
"Eliminate the one who requested such a treacherous action in the first place."
As Varis charged at Dark, Howlite jumped in the way and held her back.
"Hey hey hey. Look at me. I appreciate your efforts but Dark doesn't actually think these things. It was meant as a training exercise. You see, we weren't sure if you could poof me if he just said so. So we came up with a scenario in which Dark makes me seem unnecessary. It was all meant to just get you in the zone. Don't worry I'm fine. Come 'ere."
He gave her a hug and patted her back.
"I'm proud of you for defending me like that. I actually have something for you. I won't give it to you until after because I don't want it to limit you in the fight."
After a little longer, he let go of his student. He turned to Dark.
"You were pretty convincing. I almost believed you. Your a good actor Dark. You should be on Broadway."
Dark sighed and rolled his eyes. "Well, let's get on with it then." Dark jumped down onto the floor. After landing on his feet he walked towards the two gems. "You ready Howlite? I don't want you going easy on her just because she's your apprentice or something." Dark then cut to a whisper. "I hope that outburst was a one time thing Variscite. You seem like a good gem, I would hate to have to dispose of you. A broken gem has to know when a friend has become a parasite. Prove your worth, don't be a leech. I wasn't kidding about what I said before. If you just mooch off of me I will get rid of you." Dark said in a serious tone. Dark jumped up to his makeshift balcony and turned invisible.
"Are you ready? Three, two, one, fight!" Dark practically shouted. He then jumped onto a separate part of the arena. Just in case Variscite decided to attack again.
