With a final wave of her hand, the mass of files vanished, and she clasped her hands together on the desk. The briefing had gone by quickly, much more so than she was use to. After hours of slogging through theses and rebuttals, she had almost expected more resistance. Though her expression was serious, she couldn't entirely contain the elation in her breezy timbre. "We have four hours until my schedule begins its countdown. This will be plenty of time for me to get everything I need together and get a statement from the last engineer who tuned up my ship. I will be heading to the hanger as soon as I've gathered my field tools, which shouldn't be long." Perhaps they'd be getting an early start, which was something the sapphire both appreciated and lamented all at once.
Padparadscha stood, and returned the Diamond salute to 7XB,"I trust this will give you time to prepare your team. This has been a productive meeting, commander-- I look forward to working with you," She pulled out a small screen, and called her servant back into the room. The pearl scurried in and stood by the door, then bowed her head toward the other gems in respect.
(I figure we can just kind of go over what the gems are up to until they meet back up in the hanger)
Then came a quick nod of their head, the messy white hair that sprouted from the top of the Quartz's head flopping about as they did so. "Yes, that is plenty of time, Your Clarity, thank you." They wouldn't even require that much time to prepare their charges, in truth, but since this was one of the first times the Rubies would see any real action on the Earth (other than the rescue mission they had been partaking in so far, that is).
They didn't want any mistakes; The mission was going to be grueling enough as it stood.
With a final, respectfully nod, they existed the room, paying little to no mind to the Pearl as they did so, threading their fingers through the dense jungle of snow hair upon their head.
And just like that, 7XB was gone, eager to flee this particular branch of the Moon Base. As potentially terrifying as 'their' world could be, it was the shadowy, intrigue-filled world of politics and diplomacy that scared the soldier the most. The next four hours were spent, largely, drilling in preparation, the last half hour or so delegated to preparing what few items were necessary for the operation. But when the time came, four hours later to the minute, they would be waiting at attention within the hanger, Rubies in tight formation behind them.
Padparadscha stood next to her desk and watched as the quartz left her office. When the doors closed, her eyes settled on the pearl standing on the opposite end of the room. "Pearl," She started, her tone beginning to betray a faint hint of fatigue,"I prefer to keep you from danger, but..." The sapphire moved back to her chair, and dipped down to start looking through the compartments of her desk,"There are too many variables we still can't be sure of. I'll need someone to watch the ship while we're there. It will have to be you,"
The pink pearl tensed, but her eyes lit up as if a switch had been flipped,"I'll do my best, my sapphire." With that, Padparadscha finished grabbing her analytical tools. The pearl opened the door, and followed after the hastened steps of her patron. The two off them made off toward the board office for a final meeting. Then, down to meet with the Peridot who had made sure the ship was polished and ready for a deployment.
When the two pink-court gems emerged at the wide terminal gates, the sapphire's eyes scanned for her entourage. Sure enough, they were right on time. With brisk steps, Padparadscha and her pearl walked up to meet 7XB and their rubies, then each threw up a salute. She gave a curt nod, and the pearl bustled up to open the ship's hatch. It was a small vessel, though there would be room to spare for the group of gems.
Upon the timely arrival of the gem they were intending to protect and (surprisingly) her Pearl, the quartet of little red rubies met them with a respectful salute, followed momentarily by their commander. 7XB met her nod with one of their arms, hands clasping behind their back as they thought turned to face the ship.
Waiting patiently for both their patron sapphire and her Pearl to board, the Quartz and rubies followed after in quick succession, the small corridiums shuffling to gather up by one of the walls- as to stay out of the way.
7XB, however, chose to remain stationed by the door, out of force of habit more than anything. They weren't overly fond of flying, and lingering near the door, when convenient, helped to alleviate this.
The pearl remained next to the door until every gem had entered the ship, then keyed in the code that would engage the locks. She tried to keep herself from ogling at the immense clear quartz who too took up a position near her, and waited, twiddling her thumbs nervously as Padparadscha settled into her seat in front of the control panel. The pearl whisked up to the panel herself and began to punch codes and coordinates, a bit relieved to be out of 7XB's intimidating shadow.
The quiet gravity engines energized, the atmosphere shields went up, "Prepare for lift-off," The sapphire said, with a glance around the ship. Her eyes settled on 7XB for a moment. Though she didn't necessarily question them, she wondered if there was some unease they'd left unspoken. About the mission, or perhaps something else, she wasn't sure.
The vessel glided up, taking a leisurely pace as other ships and gems meandered around the huge terminal space, until it centered into the hanger runway. The speed increased as Pink Pearl guided the ship up to the mouth of the docking station, and finally, out into the empty space between the silver moon, and the bright blue sphere that awaited them.
In moments, the ship catapulted smoothly through the darkness of space, closing the distance until it pierced the hazy glow of the Earth's atmosphere. The pearl watched the ships monitors closely, to be sure that the shields were taking the friction well. Soon, the tiny continent they headed toward had ballooned into a vast expanse of verdant trees, and opalescent mists, framed by dark, jagged cliffs. The pearl stepped aside, taking timid steps toward the door once again as Padparadscha pulled up her maps.
7XB, as a deeply-engrained force of habit, didn't really pay any real attention to the Pearl. This wasn't out of any real dislike or malice towards Pearls, but the Quartz, like most gems, were content to let servants serve their purpose uninhibited. If they had noticed her, though, it was very unlikely that they would have recognized the cause of her discomfort; So used to being around other quartz gems, they often forgot how intimidating they must appear to other gems.
Upon Padparadscha's announcement, arms crossed over their chest, the entirety of their massive bulk falling back to rest against the hull of the vessel. That initial 'lurch' of the gravity engines initializing was always the worst for them, and they couldn't help but grimace as it happened- though in their own mind, they hid it well. But after that, having adjusted again to their least favorite activity, they were fine, less than a flutter showing up their face as the ship punched through the planet's atmosphere.
A coordinate plane projected across the control panel, and onto the wide view bay of the ship. Her eyes flicked over the panel, then up to the clear aperture that gave them a view of the landscape sprawled below them. "Nearing the transmission coordinates. Sensors engaged," Her fingers flashed across the screen,"Keep an eye out for disparate, unnatural structures," She spoke to no one in particular, her eyes darted back up to scan the rolling canopy as the ship came in closer to the trees. Though she had an excellent eye for detail, she wasn't seeing any noteworthy dips or hills in the environment. She sighed-- that would make things much more difficult than she'd hoped. The site could be anywhere, and they had very little to go off of. There was still a bit of hope in her that one of the other gems would spot something.
Soon, the ship slowed, and gently, Padparadscha guided it around the area, keeping her eyes peeled. "This is the transmission coordinate. I'm searching the topography for a safe landing spot so we can scope out the area. The scan hasn't picked up anything out of the ordinary," There didn't seem to be a safe way to land around here. She pursed her lips, trying to keep irritation from showing on her face. Suddenly, her sensors blipped, a semi level plane was below them. "I'm bringing it down,"
The ship glided carefully down through the canopy, flocks of disturbed organic creatures went flying and hopping all around them. The hull was strong enough to withstand breaking through a few thick branches-- it wasn't as graceful as she had hoped, but finally, the ship settled to the ground and stabilized itself.
Out of their inborn desire to prove themselves, though not one of the four had much of an idea what the word 'disparate' meant, the rubies clamored towards the nearest port, clawing their way on top of one another to survey the surrounding landscape and it's lack of anything other than tall trees. Though suddenly exasperated, 7XB did, at least, appreciate the enthusiasm that the little gems brought to the mission. For their own part, the Quartz had scarcely taken a look out of the nearest port before she began to lower the ship, the entirety of their forming tensing at the sudden descent, "Understood, Your Clarity." They said, a rather jagged edge, unintentially, shading their voice. "Rubies, " the called hushedly, ushering over the little gems who quickly gathered before them, "I trust that don't need to remind you how important this mission is?"
Though this wasn't as important as a operation sanctioned by Yellow Diamond herself, it was the next best thing: an assignment given, through the chain of command, by Pink Diamond. In way, though, it almost WAS a mission from their Diamond, since they has been temporarily put under Pink control. Either way, a job like this was a great honor, and 7XB was not a quartz who tolerated failure- or being embarrassed.
There was some tension in the air as the quartz wrangled their rubies, but the sapphire's head was already elsewhere-- she trusted that there was no need for her to step in. With the ship snugly placed between towering trees and lush foliage, Padparadscha stood and moved into action. She equipped her slate, which floated just in front of her. With it, she summoned a row of clear tubes, an assortment of picking and appraisal tools, sensors and communicators.
After she was suited up, she gestured to the pearl, who moved to the control panel and began entering the defense and lock codes. The sapphire turned to face the rest of the team,"Step lightly, we don't know what we're going to find on the transmission site. Stay close, we're moving out," For her, the worst case scenario would be finding nothing, which was likely considering the span of time that had passed. But, she remained hopeful.
The hydraulics decompressed, and the door locks disengaged. A plume of tropical air rushed into the cabin, along with the haunting calls and chatter of alien organics, and the creaking treetops as they bowed under the oppressive wind far above. The pink pearl stood next to the door, tapping her fingers together as the sapphire stepped toward the threshold between her ship and the unfamiliar territory outside.
The Sapphire was quite right: 7XB needed no additional assistance in bringing the Rubies under control. Despite their rather youth appearance, two of them had been with 7XB for at least the last thousand years, and even the most junior of them had served beneath the Quartz for a century. As such, they all knew what was expected of them, and it didn't take very long at all to bring them to heel.
The lot of then turned then to face Padparadscha, just as she began to speak. She seemed a bit on edge, preoccupied. But they understood that it wasn't their place to know the Sapphire's mind. They were there to destroy the components and recover this.. relic? For Pink Diamond. And most importantly, protect her.
"We understand, Your Clarity." And on the note of protection, "Would you allow us to lead the way? I wish to ensure your first contact is at least somewhat secure."
She paused and glanced back to the entourage with a bemused look in her eyes. Having been on so many solo dispatches lately, she'd nearly forgotten the biggest convenience of having a team on hand. The world outside of her ship was crawling with organics, and kaleidoscopic plant-life that shrouded every nook in deceptive patterns. Not to mention, the unknown variables that swirled around this entire mission. Letting the security experts do their jobs would take the edge off of her anxiety. She cleared her throat, a bit embarrassed, "Oh! Of course, please do," Padparadscha stepped aside, making way for the entourage.
Suddenly without a present directive, Padparadscha felt the urge to chat-- filling the space in the air would calm her nerves. She looked up to her pearl, and gave her a small smile."Just wait for us here, we'll be back soon enough," She said, with a quiet voice, then passed a field communicator into the pearl's hands, just in case,"Keep the locks and defenses up, as we've discussed," Pink Pearl nodded, but the servant's jitters were clearly getting the better of her.
7XB was pleased to be able to go about their directive, as expected. The Padparadscha Sapphire was an intelligent gem, and the Quartz had expected nothing less from her- After all, why bring them along if she didn't want their protection? Still, they couldn't help but feel relieved. They had, occasionally, had gems who enlisted them for 'protection' but had truly desired little more than a glorified status symbol. It was rare, but it did happen. Luckily for 7XB they had never been beholden to such insufferable gems for very long.
Moments later the first of the Rubies passed through across the threshold of the hatchway, followed in quick succession by their compatriots and, finally, 7XB, the gangway groaning in agony beneath the weight of the Quartz. In a flashy show of lights, both red and white, all weapons were summoned in the same beat. Thick, mailed fingers curled into their palm as 7XB peered around, trying to survey their surroundings with little success.
As she stood next to her pearl, the sapphire found herself becoming increasingly restless and curious. She leaned to peer through the door, and get a glimpse of the team as they secured the perimeter. The clearing wasn't much bigger than the ship itself, they were perched atop a mossy hill, surrounded by a thick wall of twisting vines and huge fanning leaves. The incessant noise of the jungle was a living hum all around them, but Padpara thought she could pick out a sound, a rustle from above. Her eyes trained up into the branches of the trees, and she spotted a small, furry creature with a long tail. It appeared to be an organic, but it watched the gems with an intense golden stare. Around it, she realized, were more eyes, peeking through the leaves. With every movement of the gems, the creatures would retreat, then return, as if more intrigued than afraid.
It was doubtful that these aliens were harmful, but it unsettled her to be watched. The sapphire straightened her back, and waited for her security detail to figure it out. She didn't want to rush them-- if these organics were watching from so far up in the trees, who knew what else could have its eyes on them. The longer she stood within her ship, the more she wished she could remain there. But, there was work to do, and she was grateful she didn't have to do it alone. Despite her restlessness, she remained quiet in an attempt to avoid impeding them.
Padparadschand her Pearl were not alone in the spotting of these strange, small little organic creatures, covered in dark far with.. strangely unsettling eyes. The longer they looked, the more of these strange little organic creatures seemed to be hiding in the surrounding woodwork.
Unsettling, maybe, but these nasty little lifeforms didn't seem they were going to create any problems for them, but 7XB still had the repressed urge to frighten them away.
They.. weren't fond of organic life.
Other than the audience, the sight seemed as suitable a landing zone as one could expect. "All's clear, your Clarity," they stated crisply, now turning their attention, which has been momentarily focused upon the ship and their surroundings, to the Rubies. "Start clearing a path through this underbrush," they order cooly, motioning in the general direction of their objective, memorized from what the Sapphire had shown them, "Don't let anything get in the way. I don't plan to stand in this clearing all day."
Ugh. It was already getting humid. The red gems saluted- then rushed eagerly to begin the laborious slash-n-burn operation. This jungle was so dense they'd have to find their own path-or make one, as it were. If the little beasts weren't scared before, they would be now.
Upon hearing 7XB's declaration, Padparadscha centered herself for a quiet moment. Then, with a final nod to her pearl, she made her way down onto the mossy forest floor. The feeling of the spongy material under her feet was a strange, new sensation, different than the grass she had been familiar with. She was almost tempted to take a sample of it, but she wasn't here for biological research. Instead, she initiated her documentation, rolling footage and taking notes on their position, and of the organics, who seemed to scatter the moment the Rubies began hacking through the vegetation.
The doors of the ship retracted and sealed behind her, leaving the sapphire to feel disconnected from the comfort of familiarity. She looked up to 7XB as they presided over their team, and wondered how many alien worlds the lot of them had tackled together through the millennia. They worked, seemingly unfettered by this obscure landscape. Though she no longer had the comfort of being in her ship, she felt assured of her safety, so long as she could remain close to her guards. The sapphire hovered near 7XB, glancing around to make sure nothing was sneaking up on her. "Such a strange place. Have you seen zones like it?" She inquired, her voice quiet. She spoke to calm her own nerves more than anything.
