Howlite decided that if Variscite was ever going to join the Broken Gems she might as well be combat ready. He needed some place that was large, isolated, and with no possibility of collateral damage. So naturally he chose Mask Island. He had already told Variscite to meet him there. But there was a catch. It was a trap. Howlite needed her to handle the unexpected. So an ambush was exactly what she needed. He climbed up and hid amongst the jungle. He was in his natural element. He hid in a tree top with his rifle pointed at the warp pad. Watching. Waiting. He had no intent to kill. This would simply be a sharp pain. But she needed this. Besides, what better way was there to teach her?
The warp pad came to life as it began to glow, finally beaming up towards the sky, illuminant white light racing toward the clouds. Variscite's form appeared as she came through, expecting to see Howlite. He was not there... Variscite figured he was late and prepared by stretching out her body.
Variscite eased her leg up over her head from the front; hooking her foot to her neck and shut her eyes, She stretched the other, then preformed a hand stand and kicked her legs around through the air, as if preforming upside down round-house kicks, but stretching more than kicking. She then bent her legs and sat on her knees. The green gem let her head fall back as she lifted from her thighs, providing space for her head to sit on her gluts. As she stretched, Variscite observed the scenery around her.
The trees were of a light green hue, having multiple branches retreating from the trunk. Different shades of green colored a vast array of bushes, and plants. Odd crystalline rocks covered the place, as if it an angry an angry god had thrown them down in rage because his tribe stopped giving offerings to him. The whole place had the appearance of a tropical island.
Howlite grinned as Variscite began stretching. He pulled the trigger and fired the bullet at her knee. While hiding in the trees he shouted. "If you want to learn to improvise like me, I have but one challenge for you. Survive! If you can last 3 days on this island without me poofing you, I'll seem you combat ready. Let the games begin!" Then he went even deeper into the jungle and waited for his prey to come to him. He looked forward to this. If Variscite passed his test, even Sulfur would be impressed with her work. He hoped this would pay off. He was confident in her. She reminded him of himself back in his early days back on Homeworld. Soon she'd be just as skilled as him. All she had to do was survive.
Varicite's eyes twisted open in shock as the bullet fired. Their was no way she could dodge this unprepared. Nevertheless, she rotated her body so fast she injured herself and managed to move her knee out of the way just in time. However, the bullet hit her foot full force as she continued to twist into a standing, battle stance.
Variscite hissed in part from the pain, but mostly from the shock of the perfectly calculated surprise attack. She could deal with an opponent straight on in a one on one battle with the proper surroundings, even multiple weaker adversaries, but throughout her long and depressing year of training to be stronger, she had never encountered an enemy who struck her first. She was a master of stealth, dealing lethal blows to unsuspecting creatures. But now this Howlite used her same stealth strategy, but far more perfected. He was faster than she was too, and in acrobatics. It their were any advantages she had on him, they were few. He was simply a difficult opponent to be paired up with.
It was not long until Variscite realized that he had temporarily retreated. Three days to survive, huh. Although Variscite would have preferred to stay and prepare better, she figured any unsuspected outcome could result from her standing idle in the opening. Perhaps the best approach would be to stay on the move. She began walking in the direction she though she had heard Howlite going in.
As Variscite went towards his location he laughed. His iconic bone chilling laughter could be heard from every corner of the island. As if he were everywhere at once. "You're gonna have to do better than that!" He fired another shot at her left hand, then continued moving through the trees. This was going to be great! Not only would Variscite learn how to adapt to survive, he also could have a little bit of fun too. He enjoyed this game and was very good at it. The question was, could she catch him? Could she out play him? If so, she'd be the perfect fit for the team. If not... They'd start over. And do it all over again and again until she can.
Prepared this time Variscite quickly moved her left hand out of harms way and continued to race through the trees, beginning to contemplate her options. Should she leave Howlite believing she was chasing her and hid on the other side of the island. No. Howlite was a natural hunter, there was a good possibility that even she could not be stealthy enough to evade him. If he caught her... another surprise attack. It would be game over. No. She had to beat Howlite in his own game. But how! The last fight she had with Howlite was not simply lucky, she had to force herself to limits extending beyond her maximum capability too. The fight not only physically wounded her, but also mentally broke her down. Another full on fight would be improbable. She estimated that in Howlite's natural environment, she would have a 12% chance of beating him, if she bled her will to death like last time, which was unlikely possible. She would have to try.
Howlite once again spoke. His voice echoing from everywhere. "Come on Variscite! Think. Look where you are. Look at your surroundings. Use the island to your advantage." Then he pulled a coconut off a tree and threw it next to her before retreating back into the trees. "Remember what I said. Don't calculate! Improvise!" He hoped she'd understand what he was saying. This whole island was like a big game board. She would have to figure out how to adapt. Survival of the fittest. The only one true law. Something Howlite had to learn very early on. If she didn't learn to adapt she would just get kicked around as he did. He didn't want that for her. So this game was going to prove just how strong her will was. Determination was the only way to win this game.
"Improvise?" Variscite whispered to herself. She looked at the coconut, symbolizing 'food'; 'life.' Was Howlite telling her that she had to survive on the island; that she had to 'live?' Well... in that case... Variscite doubled back and took off at 73% of her speed, conserving energy. While it is a fact that gem kind do not need human sustenance or rest to keep themselves from wasting away, they did have to watch out for predators, such as corrupted gems. They also needed shelter, continuous batters of rain and hail could potentially change the outcome of a battle. There was yet a third threat on the island, Howlite. He was easily the most dangerous.
After a few hours, Variscite had reached a stream. It is true that gems do not 'require human substance,' but the heat made her thirsty nonetheless. She bent down, drank her fill of water, and bathed her exhausted body. It seemed the wound from the bullet that hit her hand had recovered.
Hidden amongst the trees, Howlite watched her eat. "See now you're getting it!" He sat there watching. A feeling of pride starting filling in Howlite. He was proud of her. So far at least. Howlite then got ready to set up his next attack. While Variscite was getting water, he had dug a large pit. About 10 feet down. Then he covered it with bushes so it looked like the rest of the ground. How would she deal with this? She could avoid it. If she's careful. But if she does fall in, she's have gonna improvise her way out. Howlite was rather interested to see how long she would last. He figured she would last at least one day. Hopefully. If she could last all 3 on the first go, Sulfur would be so proud. He'd have no choice but to accept her.
Variscite finished replenishing herself, then turned to leave. As she continued, she felt a dark presence was near her, possibly Howlite, but maybe another corrupted gem. Variscite made cautioius steps, ready for anything to attack from the trees, the sky, but not from the ground. Not before long the ground caved out below her. As Variscite fell she considered extending her legs to stay grounded on the sides of the pit to avoid reaching the bottom. However, she would likely injure her legs. So the piteous gem opted to let her fall take place, distributing her weight in a way that would extend her time of impact so she would not take the brunt of the fall damage at once. She did this by unfolding her entire body, Variscite hit feet first and then allowed her upper body to follow. Then bent her knees and ended up in a croch at the bottom of the pit, uninjured.
But how to escape. Variscite thought to use her weapon on a nearby tree branch to grapple out, but their were none. Could my built in swords allow me to crawl out? she thought. This was indeed possible, but her best bet would be to simply us her acrobats. Variscite lunged at the side of the wall, croaching. and then used the momentum she had obtained to cartwheel out of the manhole, ready for anything.
Howlite watched her climb out. "I gotta say I'm impressed." Then he noticed the sun was going down. "I'd find shelter if I were you. Predators are most dangerous at night." With that he vanished into the trees, planning his next attack. Perhaps with luck, she would realize not to sleep. If so she'd probably last longer. If not, well she could always try again. As the sun finally set and night entered the island, Howlite got ready for his assault. His next tactic was a little different. This wasn't a direct attack so much as a test of sorts. But first he would have to stalk his squire for a little bit first.
As the sun went down, Variscite saw a corrupted crab monster crawl over to her. It glowed bluish green, as if designed for the night. As the large nocturnal beast bore down on her, Variscite lunged to the side and ran up its arm. The beast shot spines out of the top of its shell as Variscite landed on its head. She moved her legs and body, avoiding all the spikes. Then Variscite droped and rolled under it. The creature tried to crush her by laying its stomach on Variscite... a terrible mistake. Its underside was exposed, and Variscite slashed repeadidly with her grapples and short swords until she easily reached the gem and poofed it. Then Variscite chucked the gem into the stream.
As Variscite began finding large leaves and twigs for shelter she thought What wound have happened if I was unready for the spines? The came at an unexpected time. Normally, Variscite would have been caught unawares and impaled by at least three of the spikes, but Howlite's method of improvising seamed to already be taking effect.
As the moon lit up the area, Howlite decided he'd have to teach her another lesson. Never let your guard down. He shape shifted his appearance to look like a corrupted gem. His firm was that of a wolf like creature. He then snuck in and attacked Variscite in his false form. He barked a few times then tried to bite down on her arm. This was gonna truly test her improvisation skills. If she survived this attack, she will have already survived 1/3 of the way. Thanks to his wolf form, he was much faster on all fours. He wondered how Variscite would defend herself. Or if she'd find out that this is not a true corruption but her teacher. Either way this would be fun.
As large jaws sank into Variscite's arm she shrieked, then realized she may have signaled more creatures and pulled franticly at her arm. The irritated gem then launched her grapple at a nearby tree and pulled into it taking the wolf with her.
This was a strange and bazar scene. Variscite felt tears in her left arm, where the wolf had clamped down on, but she did not care. The pain was enough to drive one insane, but she was already insane so to speak. Variscite could not display weakness in front of any opponent, not once. She grappled from tree to tree, swinging. As she navigated around obstacles, Variscite (if able to) rammed the creature into trees repeatedly every time she changed direction and avoided collision.
As Variscite slammed him into a couple trees he took serious damage. He could no longer hold his wolf form. As he changed back, in Variscite's hands was no longer a wolf, but her teacher. "Hi there! Gotta say I'm impressed. Now if you'll excuse me." He kicked Variscite to escape her grip then retreated back into the woods. "Rest my squire! You've earned it. I'll be back at Sunrise." He then laid back to rest in a tree. That encounter was amazing. Her improvisation was so good that he decided to keep to his word and let her rest for the remainder of the night. She had earned it. It was becoming clear that Variscite was an exemplary student worthy of Howlite's teachings. Maybe one day he'd teach her torture. Maybe one day.

This Roleplay is a prequel to Steven Universe to an extent with some slight retconing and its own progression to the story that will turn out differently to how stuff plays out in the show. Thanks to the message by Rose Quartz several gems are rising up to protect Earth and have labelled themselves as the Crystal Gems. Others on earth are remaining aligned to Homeworld though despite the isolation of Earth from Homeworld
All gems on earth are still stranded, the communication hub is still offline and all the space warps are shattered, it has now been revealed that this is the work of Rose Quartz and her small group known as the Crystal gems. They have rebelled against Homeworld and have chosen to protect the Earth (Trapping themselves on Homeworld to keep the warps down).
Now both sides are fighting among themselves along with fighting against the 'Corruption' a virus is infecting many gems turning most of them into mindless monsters, but those with a stronger will seem to becoming something more sinister.
The Game has changed now. The question has finally been posed, are you against Homeworld or allied with them. Or do you have your own agenda that may or may not been assisted by the ‘Corruption’. Regardless the seeds have been placed down and although it is only the beginning the fight for or against Earth and the corruption has begun. The choice is yours for how it is shaped on the Original Steven Universe Roleplay Site.

*Garnet, Pearl and Rose are assumed capture on Homeworld
*Garnet,Pearl and Rose broke the space warps to delay Homeworld
*Thanks to Roses Message gems now know what the Kindergarten was used for
