How long... has he been running? It feels like its been hours of non-stop sprinting and jumping to try and leave his 'followers' in the dust. Every few bounds he was glancing back.... the Quartz was always rather close, crazy how fast such a large gem could move. Pyrope wasn't too far behind either but Varis tried not to look at them, though he would be lying if he said he wasn't happy to see them back together again.
The area had changed dramatically, while they started in a human city, large buildings and busy streets have been replaced by quickly passing trees, grassland and plains to.... water? Well.... its not what you think.... Varis had reached a warp pad not too far from outside the city limits. Stepping onto the pad it started to glow brightly before the beam of light shot out from it, claiming Varis in its light... he didn't look back to see if anyone was close.
Thinking he was safe, he came out at the warp pad within the Sea Spire, thinking about it, this was a home to him... also the place he met Pyrope.. was also cracked by the same gem but he knew she didn't have that in mind at the time. Stepping off from the pad he walked closer to the first wall he saw that lead down a long corridor, he leaned up onto the wall before sliding down into a sitting position. His hood up over his head as he rested his head down onto his arms, which were up on his knees. He was tired... he didn't want to run anymore... he was just glad that.... wait.... is that warp pad lighting up again?!
Varis was certainly giving them a run around, in fact she was almost surprised XB was so dedicated to tracking him down. Then she remembered that despite their recent efforts, they were still a quartz. They wouldn't stop till they found him, and did... something. She didn't really know what XB had in mind, which (among other reasons) was why Pyrope was still following this little side mission. Their last interaction was dramatic to say the least, and perhaps some time to let tensions lower might have been good she couldn't let XB harm Varis. That was the issue, she had run the situation in her head over and over while they ran. She came to the realization that if push came to shove, it worried her who's side she would take...
The warp pad stream gave way to the Spire, "I have a good feeling this is where he's gone... This way." She moved further into the structure, very specifically speaking a little louder to try and warn Varis, "Well, XB, I would keep our eyes peeled. Since it's only you and I, we may want to be careful."
The chase was long, or was it? The sun had long been shining upon their backs by the time 7XB would come upon the warp pad, with no Variscite in sight. Later on, they would be hard pressed to remember how long they and the fusion had been tracking, the only thing that really mattered in that moment was the fleeing gem on the horizon. Single minded in their determination, there was little time to consider what they would actually do once their query was captured, especially as the loud throbbing throughout their head began to fade. They stepped upon the warp, waiting a breath longer for their companion; It was only when they faded into the warp-stream that they finally registered their surroundings.
Pyrope's words bouncing across the cracked expanse wherein they currently stood Drew their gaze about. This was a Spire, or at least what has once been one. Long abandoned now, it was impossible to tell if it has ever been completed. What a waste. It would all have to be redone anyway. "Variscite," they projected outward from the ancient warp with clenched fists, their dulcet tones bounding through the countless corridors and openings, "I know you're here." Despite the fusion's concern, they weren't sure themselves what their intention was. "Don't make me bring this wreck down around us looking for you." It would be easy enough, ruined as it was. "Now."
The pad was lighting up! How could they have known he came here? ..... Right.. Pyrope..
Jumping to his feet and dashing further down the hall, he had to get some distance between him and the 'hunting' party. Getting down the hall he could hear the warp pad lighting up and then turning off, they had arrived. If that wasn't enough of a sign for him he heard Pyrope... he couldn't make out everything she said but he knew they were here, to Varis, he figured it was still the three gems from before. Pyrope, the Quartz with the tough head, and that Howlite with an itchy trigger finger.
Then he heard someone else, the Quartz maybe? It seems she also wanted to show they were here, though what she said didn't seem like they just wanted to talk.... maybe his apology wasn't enough? Not that he could blame them anyways. Pyrope knew he would be here.. they must have led them here, Varis already felt like such a clod, he didn't want to see Pyrope, Pye or Pyre... maybe he could catch just the Howlite or the Quartz? He felt better having to run from one of them versus the fusion.
He awaited around the corner, peeking out only to see Pyrope and 7XB, alone. Maybe the Howlite was routing him? He had to stay on edge.... but he had to watch at least these two, wanting to know where they were so he knew where not to be... or he was going to get seen.... again not the brightest of the Crystal Gems.
Part of her was starting to think maybe Varis hadn't come here, but they had to be sure. As much as they didn't want XB to get their hands on him again, there was some unfinished business she had to deal with. Last thing she wanted was for things to be awkward between them.
She watched their surroundings closely, trying to keep an eye out for any sign of Varis or where he might have ran off to, just missing him peaking out. She pressed on to turn around that same corner, "Maybe he's not here, are you sure..." she glanced back at XB, noting their determined look. Right, they were a quartz. She wouldn't be able to redirect them if she tried.
The quartz was in an unusual state, almost trance-like as they pushed on ahead past their fusion companion, determination shining upon their face. 'I was sure I just.. Augh!'
This was really getting under their skin, but why? The pain had long since melted away, but 7XB never ceased to appear angrily frustrated.
"I've had reasons, you know!" They shouted out suddenly and without context, their voice galloping ahead of them as they continued to pursue shadows down the corridor. "Reasons to be afraid, to run away from my responsibilities. Come. Out!" They pivoted at the middle, pile-driving their fist through the crystaline structure; It was an act of pure frustration that caused the entire region to quake with a warning rumble. This ancient spire could only take so much. Wrenching their embedded arm free with a grunt, they continue down the corridor what seemed a rather manic state, unaware of Pyrope. "Six. Months. I spent at the bottom of a methane ocean. Fighting the pressure just to survive. I..I tried to hold up the roof of the ship long enough for them to find us!" Clearly they were in a different place, or were at least so enraged that it was indistinguishable. "All of us!"
Varis watched as the two gems moved right by him, slipping around the corner towards the way they just came from. There was another hallways adjacent to the one they were walking up, Varis swiftly dashes down the hall reaching the end. He was still scanning about for the third gem... they had a rifle so he had guessed this game was some kind of sharpshooter, in other words good at hiding away out of sight.
Looking down the hallway again he saw that the Quartz was moving fast, moved right past Pyrope and... wow did they seem miffed! This couldn't still be from the head-butt earlier.. could it?
He heard they were talking.. ranting even about something, yet still wanted Varis to come out and face them... he really wanted to avoid that if possible. "KREEEESHH!" The sound of the crystalline structure shattering from the mighty blow. The more she spoke the worse Variscite had felt.. if he was the cause of this.
She was growing closer to him now that she picked up the pace after taking out a pillar. Sighing, maybe he could help.... she was so mad that his little trick might not work on her... might even send her even more into a rage. He stepped out from behind the wall once the Quartz was close enough, hands up before him trying to look non-threatening as possible... though he didn't look that threatening to begin with.
"H-Hold up! I'm here.... um.. s-sorry about the head-butt. I really didn't want this to get this far...." His neon green eyes locking onto the slightly taller gem.... honestly he was kinda ready for her to deck'em.
Pyrope's reluctance was growing rapidly, maybe pursuing Varis was a bad call. As much as she wanted to make sure there was nothing awkward left between them, it seemed the situation hadn't exactly calmed down. Then again, it hadn't really been her call anyways. Whether or not Pyrope went along XB was still determined to find Varis, again she realized her place here really was just damage control.
XB's following... 'incident' (she didn't really know what else to call it) didn't help dissuade her nerves. Whatever this episode of theirs was, it was unnerving to see it first hand. It didn't cross her mind XB might have something under that glare of theirs, some sort of traumatic experience. It was actually beginning to worry her, "X...XB?" She tried to keep up with them, making sure they didn't hurt themselves or Varis in whatever state they were in. XB was clearly on some sort of short fuse the way she was, something that seemed to be lost on Varis as he popped out in front of them. It all happened so fast she couldn't even react before XB did, watching whatever played out in surprise.
The quartz must have looked quite manic in that moment, didn't they? With their bone-bleached mane of hair scattered about messily, disheveled easily by their continuing aggression, focused so abstractly on Varis. He infuriated 7XB by his very presence, though it was the same for the rebels, wasn't it? The sight of them made their body turn molten with rage- The nerve of it all! How they just prance about like their own the place! Spitting in the face of Homeworld. The Diamonds! And every gem that had died defending them. So many of my friends. The quartz could practically see their faces as Variscite appeared in their vision, vision going hazy as they lunged forward as if rigged on a spring to seize the rebel by the insignia upon his chest, imagined or not, a bracing strike embedding them in the nearest wall with some animosity, flying through the air until impact. "You! I warned you." 7XB practically barks, their voice slicing the air like a whip, face mere inches from that of their rival as their manic demand spilled forth. "What are you fighting for? Earth? Humans!?"
That was what they couldn't figure out, what they had racked their brain about over and over, but couldn't justify logically. Therefore, it had no explanation.
Not having the time to react before he was pinned into a wall, such force had cracked in the wall. His back was throbbing, his neck had smacked off the wall, not enough to do any real harm to his gem core.
"You! I warned you." Ohhhh they were pissed! Varis was having a hard time keeping his face towards the Quartz. His first response was that he wanted to head-butt and make some room, not again... he kept his face to the side, not wanting to stare this gem in the eyes right now.... he didn't want to make things worse then they already are.
With his head turned to the side, he was able to see Pyrope.... he quickly turned his head the other direction. He still felt awful about before... he wanted to get away but he also didn't want this Quartz to be on a warpath for him..... it was confusing and honestly kinda sucked. When the raging Quartz before him who had him in a strong grip, asked him what he fought for he wasn't sure how to answer.
"I uh.... just... don't want anyone to get hu-hurt...." This was the best he could muster. "Not g-gems or hu-humans.. I just want people to be..." His gem core started to glow... dim at first before a green mist like aura started to flow out from his core. The soothing waves pushing at the mind of 7XB and even Pyrope if she was close enough, while Varis himself wasn't trying to do this... it was just his reaction. "... Ya know... h-happy."
His stutter was clearly worse then before... his aura could easily be ignore... even more so if the rage a gem was feeling was too great.
"Oof...." Pyrope winced, that was a bad hit right there. It was good to see Varis was terribly damaged, part of her was worried XB was going to take things a little too far like she did forever ago. While she closed the distance between her and the others, she still felt hesitant to interrupt their interaction. Of course if XB took things too much further she would step in, but it seemed these two were working out their differences (even if not in a usual way).
Something about Varis' response struck a cord with Pyrope, it wasn't really something she thought about. Happy... making gems happy. For her it was simply her duty and putting Earth in the most capable hands, the Diamond's hands. Yet something in his simple answer made her really think on it. Maybe it was just the aura but... she stepped forward and put a hand on XB's shoulder, "It's going to be alright XB, you're fine. Just... let him go, alright?" Her tone was uncharacteristically soft, she was genuinely caring, "I don't know what that was about but... I'm here, you're with... with friends. So just, calm down. We can talk."
7XB's stony gaze dug sharply into Variscite as he tried so desperately to avoid looking them in the eye, burrowing like a hot knife through the other gem. His words washed over them, the Quartz's manic, raging expression only growing more contorted as their grip seemed to tighten with each word, knuckles forcing him at least a half-inch deeper into the crumbling crystal. "Happy?" They spat incredulously, the very idea was childish! Gems weren't burdened with such things, it didn't matter to them like it did to lesser creatures. They could just turn it off?.. Couldn't they?
What a idiotic banner to gather behind, to betray your own kind over.
Their vision had begun to grow clearer for a brief moments before Pyrope made contact with them, the entirety of their molten form growing rigid beneath the fusion's touch, their unbelievable fury turning with them as they cocked around to face her. "I don't need YOUR reassurances! I-" they seemed to realize themselves as their blurry, red-tinted vision grew sharp, Pyrope's concerned visage giving them pause. But then.."I don't need friends, Fusion." And as suddenly as they vanished 7XB had found themselves again. Their attention rotated again to the traitor in their grasp, lips pulled now in a cold frown. "You're cracked if you believe that." How many gems would die in the war to come? They could already see it on the horizon. "I hope it's worth all the wasted resources so you defects could have a planet to yourself for awhile while the rest of us do our duty."
The grip this gem had on him was intense, he could even feel the rage from her... like a high heat radiating off of them. Now the Quartz had his undivided attention, even more so since she forced him into the wall even more, the crystal structure was giving in to the pressure.
Why was that such a bad thing? Humans are happy, gems are happy.... what could a single gem have against such a thought? "I don't need friends, Fusion." That kinda set something off in Varis, the green energy fades rather quickly, he was looking down now... all he saw was the fist holding him into the wall.
"One... their name is Pyrope. Two.... I may be cracked, or even a defect.." Part of that was true... he had been thinking lately that he must have a few defects since he emerged from the Kindergarden so late. He looks back up at the Quartz with passion burning in his neon green eyes, his hands shooting up and grabbing the Quartzs own hands and slowly wrenching her hands from him.
"I never wasted anything, I was made here, stuck here, never saw OUR home, been cracked, fought METALS! Lost friends and still don't know who the hell I AM!" His voice was loud, not as loud as the Quartz got but... he was making sure he was heard. He was stepping in 7XB's direction trying to get away from the wall, "This planet ISNT ours! We don't PLAY and.... and...." His face had flushed a green-ish color. Clearly rather worked up, he throws his arms out to the side to open the Quartz up and he.... he wrapped his arms around her tightly in a hug. Eyes gripped shut tightly, knowing he was going to take a few blows most likely.... and being they were so tall his gem could be easily seen on the back of his neck.
"I want everyone happy... and uh.... th-that means you too..." he wasn't sure what they really wanted... or what would make them happy short of him shattering himself.... he figured if this gem was so upset over this... maybe they just didn't have any friends?
Immediately Pyrope withdrew her hand and hid it behind her back, "Oh uh yeah I uhm... yeah of course XB. You're tough like that." A bit of a dark red blush grew on her cheeks, to the point where she turned away from took a couple steps to create some space. It was silly of her wasn't it, XB was a perfect example of a quartz, they didn't need someone like her watching her back.
Much of XB's words served to reaffirm her beliefs, the effect of the fog fading away even before it disappeared. It was all fine to dream of a world where everyone could be happy, but what was the chance that could happen. And even if it could, at what cost would that world come at. Again, her just believing silly things...
It was initially Varis' tone that grabbed Pyrope's attention, it was rather rare to hear him so loud (even if it was quiet compared to XB) and distinct. She never realized how much Varis might have been through, and yet he always seemed to friendly and made such an effort to make friends. Then what followed was quite possibly more surprising than the previous headbutt or anything else for that matter. He really was a gem for taking risks for other's sake wasn't he, even if it left him vulnerable. A bit of guilt struck her upon making a slow realization, she had something else to apologize for apparently.
Trained on Pyrope as she spoke, their face was rather, well, expressionless, masking any and all true feelings behind a hazy, dull mask of vague disinterest. Again. It was a skill that had honed over their centuries as a commander and had served them well on many occasions. This.. Well, it was impossible to tell if it was more of a handicap in this case or not.
It was not the Variscite's words that regained the soldier gem's undivided attention, but rather their surprise at his sudden strength of will, having freed himself before 7XB had recovered enough from the rebel's bold statement or the unusual behavior of their companion. In the end, it was they who decided to let them go, arms projecting to the side as they prepared for the strike to come. They were ready for it! Varis came at them, their body coiled yo retaliate and then..He was gone? No, wait. 7XB looked down and, as they had expected, the was the other gem, clinging to them like some kind of..Of..Hm?
"What. Is. This?!" They demanded, expression fallen to one of sheer confusion, any retort buried in the avalanche of unbridled frustration. Cheeks tinted a faint bluish, they grabbed him by the nope of his neck to, hopefully, fling him away like the pesky traitor he was.

*Thanks to Rose Quartz' message the Gems on Earth are entirely aware that the Homeworld Gems intend to wipe out the human race.
*The "corruption"'s Origin is still unknown, some suspect it was a viral infection, other claim it was a Diamond experiment gone awry and other suspect the organics were behind it. Regardless no one seem to have a proper answer about what it was and why its only isolated to Earth
*Garnet, Pearl and Rose are assumed capture on Homeworld
*Garnet,Pearl and Rose broke the space warps to delay Homeworld
*Thanks to Roses Message gems now know what the Kindergarten was used for
