What XB said struck a cord with her, she really wasn't trapped on this planet. Right? Then why was she still here, after so many years of being stuck wishing for a way to leave. Something was keeping her from just leaving...
She shook her head, "This planet doesn't 'do' things to gems, I don't think..." XB's follow up stopped her cold, what was that she said? "...'More' friends? I uhm..."
Part of her didn't want to ask, she was scared of how XB would react, but it had to be done. Her voice was quiet like a whisper, "Did... did you lose someone?" Pyrope's expression had softened, if there was one thing she could relate to with XB it was losing gems close to her. When the Kindergarden was shut down... she shuddered.
That same, terrible blue fish returned to the Quartz's face, clearly the pale gem's equivalent of turning red with rage; The visage contorted beyond all belief, first in shock at the audacity of the question, then into something much more dreadful as they ceased the fusion by the collar, but like they has Variscite at the Spire. "WHAT did you just say to me?" They demanded in a whisper so volcanic as to answer her question then and there. " 'did I lose someone?'" their rage was palpable, but there was a gnawing whisper that saw truth in what Pyrope was trying to do. "I. Lost. Everyone." Came the bitter admission, fingers digging into her like fleshhooks. "Every one of them." 2HX, 2HY, the Amethysts, 7XC and the rest of their team..that was the heaviest, bitterest pill to swallow. "Do you know what it's like to..to watch yourself die?..again and again and again?!" There were other Clear Quartz gems out there, yes, but few enough, and none that 7XB ever knew- not their team.
Their steely eyes, in the retreating light, almost seemed to shimmer, as if..wet?
Pyrope didn't even resist, whatever this was it was clear XB needed to get it out of their system. As it went on it was becoming very clear to her what the issue was. Her eyes never looked away from XB's, she had to stay strong for them, what they were unloading was some pretty heavy emotional baggage.
Despite her best efforts Pyrope shook a bit as she spoke, "We were sent here from another planet. At least five dozen, if not more. All of us were formed in the same Kindergarden, we were close." unintentionally mimicking XB her own eyes began to water, "We guarded the Kindergarden... the rebels shut us down. I'm the only surviving gem from that day."
She didn't realize it till just now, but the two of them had a deep connection. Not just as soldiers and loyalists, but as gems who have lost comrades in battle, friends and family that were shattered before their eyes. Pyrope didn't realize it but tears had actually began to trickle down her face, "I... I'm so sorry."
Without really thinking Pyrope embraced XB in a hug, she had no words. What the two of them had been through was difficult to even think about. But perhaps the two could find solace in one another.
Pyrope was brave to embrace them, the action almost identical to what the rebel, Variscite, had tried on the rather explosive Quartz back at the Sea Spire. Their reaction then had been practically volcanic, but something about this time, the way the fusion had done it.
The action sent an almost electric jolt through 7XB, causing them to releasing the quivering red gem, shrugging out of her embrace, taking an almost tenative step back. They seemed terribly unsure, turning away from Pyrope; They clenched their fists, the entirety of their form tensing as to quell any show of weakness, any quivering. "I..we were proud to serve!" They felt a burning heat upon their face now, welling up in their eyes and streaming down their cheeks.
"But..I didn't expect to be the last one left. Do you..do you know what that's like to be.." they trailed off then.
It was good progress to see XB didn't just clobber Pyrope right then and there for her hug (something that she was almost expecting), but it did honestly seem like it had done some good. "Of course, we all know that it is our duty to lay our lives down for the Diamonds. And to do it proudly! But... there are costs."
Her watery eyes looked to XB, without saying anything Pyrope could tell where XB was headed, "I was stuck on a planet with no allies or friends to speak of. I was about as alone as it gets." One of her reached down and caressed the gem on her other arm, "But I was also kind of lucky I suppose. I... we had each other. For all we knew, we were the only two sane and loyal gems on Earth. But at least we had each other."
Pyropes voice grew silent as she revealed her closest feelings, "That's why I'm always fused. Like this... I'm never alone." Her gaze slowly looked back to XB, "Have you ever... uhm... fused?" The question was barely a whisper...
7XB wasn't used to feeling like this, not by a long shot. They felt raw and sensitive, like their entire body was an exposed nerve. It was embarrassing, unravelling like this in front of the Pyrope fusion; Their face was already burning as it was. They were so focused upon their own shame that they almost didn't comprehend exactly what the other gem was asking them- her words seeming distant and fuzzy until..
The question struck them like a lightening bolt, sudden understanding falling upon them like an anvil. Turning suddenly towards their companion, their face had already taken on a contortion somewhere between confusion and disgust, "What?!.." they demanded, though it was still rather shaky and quiet, cheeks still stained with tears even as they managed to seem insulted.
Fortunately, though, their current vulnerability kept them dampened somewhat. "No! Why would I..I..no."
"Sorry I didn't mean to offend, I was just curious. It's a feeling that's hard to describe." Pyrope's hands began to fiddle idly in front of her, growing more nervous about the situation as time passes. "You see, when you're fused it's... it's weird. Your mind and body melds into one being, but at the same time you are two distinct gems. Your thoughts, your feelings, your worries, they all meld into one person. When fused it means you're never alone, you feel safe."
Her eyes looked away, "Do you understand?" At this point Pyrope was shaking, laying out her deepest feeling for XB to judge. She wasn't entirely sure why she was so intent on helping XB, even at the expense of her deepest secrets, but the point of no return had already been crossed.
Amongst many different circles across the universe, 7XB was known as a quartz with a rather rigid, unyielding view on fusion. Scathing, most would say, even more so than some of the staunchest of Homeworld Gems. They didn't know if the fusion knew much about this, but she certainly must have guessed such a thing my 7XB's treatment of them.
Any other night, or any other planet in the universe, the words Pyrope spoke would have been dangerous, ammunition for the Quartz to use against them.
But not tonight.
Their face was a battleground of conflicting emotion, somewhere between uneasy and fear. "I..no." they admitted reluctantly, almost as if they were afraid something more than the forest creatures were listening-"I've never experienced something like.. THAT." They didn't know if they wanted to, truly, but the way Pyrope was describing it was something they'd never heard. They'd always known that fusion was something one had to be careful with. It was.. dangerous.
It was evident XB was out of their comfort zone, something that Pyrope was almost glad to see as it meant they could maybe make some progress in trying to fix whatever was bothering them. Her hands continued to fiddle with one another in front of her, "Yeah, I didn't think you would have. I know how stringent Homeworld is about fusion, part of why I'm scared to return. In case I get in trouble for... me.
Her expression grew determined, "But I've learned that it isn't as bad as we've been led to believe, at least in my experience. There must be some good reason why we're all taught restraint, but the feeling... the companionship..." a sweet smile grew on her face as her eyes returned to the two gemstones on her form, "It really is something I think every gem should try. The feeling of never being alone in the universe."
Even in this compromised state, beneath the unusual tidal wave of pungent emotions, 7XB still had very stern views on fusion, and intended to be much more vocal about it. With Pyrope's instances though, the Quartz seemed to become more and more unsure with each word passing their lips.
"But that's..it's really not the POINT of fusion, is it?" Even now they almost seemed to be questioning it, their curiousity rebelling against the Quartz' own long-held views. "It's a tool! I thing to.. make weak gems stronger. Temporarily!" They had always said as much to their rubies. How could they go back on that now? "And..I don't even know if it's possible! Certainly it wouldn't be..smiled upon." Homeworld, what would they think? Euclase on the moon base had something to say about it to be sure- but that was different!
As one would expect Pyrope grew shy, "I don't know, I guess not? I was always taught that it was meant for combat, but we're not hurting anyone. And it even helps them... us work better together. Maybe I'm weak on our own, but together we feel... safe."
Suddenly it sort of clicked in her head, realizing what exactly XB had meant, "OH! You mean like me and..." a deep red blush grew on her face, "I don't really uhm... know to be honest. I uh, never tried uhm..." she stumbled over her words until she eventually just shut up to save herself the embarrassment..
Acting more on impulse than anything Pyrope shot out a hand for XB's, "There's only one way to find out..."
The look of sudden, abject horror upon 7XB's face at the Fusion's outstretched hand was almost humorous to behold, assuming you weren't the before-mentioned Quartz, that is.
"W-what?.." they sputtered quietly.
What Pyrope was saying, if they were hearing her right, was beyond dangerous..but they would be lying if they said they weren't tempted.
"Are you..are you serious? You..you want to.." 'Oh, my stars!'. 7XB had, truthfully, never even considered fusing with another gem. They were, after all, a quartz gem, and rather strong as it was. They had never had a reason to do so in combat and now the Fusion was trying to get them to do it now?
The blush that had been growing on Pyrope's face only grew at XB's response, "I didn't- I mean I... uh I..." She shut up and let XB process it, not quite realizing for a moment that they hadn't immediately shot the offer down, "I mean uhm, only if you uh... wanted to that is. Just to find out what it's like. No one would even have to know, not a word to anyone else. Cross my gem and hope to shatter."
Pyrope then waited with her hand outstretched towards XB, kind of amazed that this might actually happen. She didn't even know what it was like to fuse with a different gem, for all she knew it could be a whole different experience. In her own words, 'Only one way to find out.'
7XB had never felt, or looked, so unsure, their hawkish gaze burrowing into Pyrope's hand, as If it was going to jump our and bite them like some sort of beast. This..this went against everything that they had ever believed, and here they were even CONSIDERING the idea of fusion.
What was becoming of them? Had they really fallen so low?
But as the humans, from what they had seen, always said: 'Curiosity killed the cat.' What a cat was they didn't know, but the idea made sense to them.
And so, as tenative as they could ever remember themselves being, the Quartz took Pyrope's hand, the white threatening to overwhelm the bright red as their large fingers wrapped around her own. "Now..what?"
XB actually taking her hand was actually a surprise, but Pyrope didn't let it show. She was honestly a bundle of nerves right now, but for this to work she had to act calm and as if she knew what she was doing.
She began, "Well... it's different for first timers. Once you've done it a few times together a pair can usually fuse without any ceremony, but for first time fusions you have to sync up with your partner. Usually though a string of motions in a repetitive manner. Pretty sure humans call it 'dancing'. Here, I'll show you."
Pyrope let go of XB's hand and stepped back a bit, spending a moment to collect herself and try to remember her fusion dance that hadn't been used for years. Then suddenly she began, moving in a dance that seemed to be a hybrid between fluid motions and sudden jerking stops. Her form would move and twist in long fluid expressions before snapping back to place at the end, swapping back and forth between elegant and calculated.
After her initial demonstration she stopped and smirked at XB, motioning for them to try.
