It had been a strenuous climb, to be sure, but 7XB had gone through similar situations before, and felt more than up to the task, despite the danger of the situation.
They cupped their palm lightly, playing their rather large thumb ontop of the Sapphire's hand, a heavy brow raising lightly, "Is everything alright, your Clarity?" They questioned with a rather uncomfortable, yet sincere, kindness. "If you're worried about falling, you needn't be. I swear I'm not going to let any sort of harm befall you." On that, she had the Quartz's word. "Rush? I..ur.. suppose we don't have to move quickly.." They, truthfully, did, but this was her mission after all, and the speed at which they moved was completely up to her. Was it the height that was bothering her?
The sound of 7XB's words made her feel more buoyant. They spoke with such conviction that it seemed guaranteed that everything would be fine. But surrounded by this foreign environment, the darkening under-canopy and the drenched, murky air-- it was impossible for her to fully forget the gravity of the circumstances. The gentle grip of their hand around hers gave her an elation, despite it all. This gem was a bulwark of strength, she could trust that much. Padpara sensed their discomfort, but she hadn't expected such genuineness from them, "I...I'm fine, I just...we still have a long way to go-- and, well, we don't know what we'll find here. I suppose I'm just not use to this," The lamenting tone of her voice betrayed the growing anxiety that had agonized her since they'd touched down on the planet's surface. What was this, anyway? She'd been on dispatches before, but this was something else entirely.
She paused for a moment, her eyes searched past them for a moment, before trailing back up to meet theirs,"I have faith in you, but, please don't-- don't..." Her words were catching in her throat. She didn't know what to say to them, or how to cope with the thoughts whirling around in her mind. "--don't let me push you too hard,"
Initially, it was a sort of.. confusion that washed over 7XB's face as the Sapphire met their gaze, unsure really of what they could, or should, say to combat her mounting anxiety. Truly, this was a battlefield to which the Quartz was, admittedly, wholly unsuited.
But what came next seemed to strike a chord with them, the regal gem's admission of concern for their well-being something 7XB had never experienced before. "Oh, I.." they began, a bluish tint overwhelming their cheeks for a moment. "Uh..I won't, Your Clarity." They were unsure of what to say, really, of how to react to her concern.
Hopefully, their embarrassment was hidden by the dull light.
Pulling her closer, the quartz would allow her hand to fall, shifting around to allow her, if she wished, to wrap her arms around their rather thick neck. "Shall we go?" Their experience on this planet, even with other gems, continued to grow.. stranger.
Though it was hard to see, she caught the quiver in the quartz's voice. They were still firm in their promise, but there was something else buzzing in their aura that the dark seemed to shroud. Maybe this was getting to them, too? Whatever it was, she couldn't know, and decided to take them for their word. The sapphire let herself be drawn in close, and folded her arms around 7XB. She held on, and gave a nervous exhale as she let the rest be taken into the soldier's hands. It came as a relief that she wouldn't have a clear view of the river, or the ground for that matter, from her vantage point. There was something even more assuring about being so close, between the powerful arms of the soldier.
"Lets," She answered, readying herself for the climb. Before they made off, she figured she could do something to make it a little easier, while still conserving her energy. In a moment, she crafted a small bauble of plasma, to cast light onto the surface of the rock, and held it far enough that it wouldn't get in the way or cast troublesome shadow.
The plasma light summoned by the Sapphire was a great advantage, and 7XB couldn't help but wish that they had it when they it during their first descent, but they weren't complaining. Unbeknownst to Padpara, the Rubies would not, in fact, be waiting for them down below. The rather menacing howling they had heard earlier still vivid in their mind, they had sent them ahead separately with the promise that they would catch up to them by the time they had found a decent vantage point.
The doubted she would be happy to hear it, but they would explain everything once they reached the bottom.
"You may wish to close your eyes, Your Clarity," they said cooly, taking a step back, giving her a moment to do so, before rushing forward, projecting them both off of the outcropping, their blades finding some difficulty catching the rock before, finally, they were found a stable position. 'Easy..' they thought, having experienced a moment of panic.
Then, suddenly, came the quaking. "What the?..that-" and like that they fell, the entirety of the world shaking like a paint can, smacking them from the wall like a bug, their snapped blades vanishing as the rushing water prepared to swallow them.
The quartz didn't have to say it twice, she shut her eyes tight, and braced herself. With her head dipped down, even if she did open her eyes, there wouldn't be much to see other than 7XB. She had to fight with her own reflexes to make sure she didn't impede them with her tense grip, a bit harder to accomplish than she hoped. There was a wash of air against them, for a moment longer than she would've liked, before she felt the tangent shock between gauntlets and stone. Her nerves buzzed but she kept her eyes closed.
At first, she wasn't sure if it was her own trembling from the force of the impact, or something else-- until she heard the clear quartz's confusion, and realized there was a tremor rippling through the rock around them. Her eyes flashed open, her body overcome with a nauseating stab of adrenaline. She gave a frantic attempt to put together the situation as the two of them spilled through the air. She sent out a whip of glowing plasma-- dread poured over her when the chord stalled short, the cliff face was already too far out of her range, and they were falling much faster than she could've reacted. Eyes widened, she watched in silent shock as they came smacking into the surface of the water.
The gems plunged into the cold, deep torrent. The sapphire didn't let go of her rope, it fell with them and melted into the river bank, but now the substance cooled and crackled as it was stretched thin with the water, threatening to snap. She also didn't let go of 7XB-- no longer could she keep herself from locking her arms around them with all of the strength her meager form could muster as the water tried to tear them away.
7XB..didn't really have any time to think about what could have possibly been done, joining Padparadscha in her silent, wide eyes stare, though theirs was not one of horror, but shock. They had been in such deep thought and the sudden, rather traumatic, caused them to freeze up for a moment.
Fortunately, the sudden smack into the frigid rapids beneath spurned them into action. At the speed the water was moving, they were already far downriver from where they wanted to by the time 7XB gathered themselves; After first ensuring they hasn't lost their passenger, they righted themselves, not an easy task in this water, embedding one of their feet into the Rocky River bed with a rather painfully stomp, the sound muted entirely by the water.
This brought them to a sudden halt. "Are..are you alright back there?!" They called frantically over their shoulder, trying to be heard over the roaring water.
Dizzy, drenched in cold water, Padparadscha's head whirled with a thick fog as the gems emerged above the surface. There was a jolt, it felt as if they'd stopped moving-- she could hear 7XB saying something, but she couldn't do much thinking at all through her haze, and was unable to give a response for a moment. Her grip remained tight, she grimaced as she became more lucid and broke from her state of shock. It dawned on her that 7XB was standing against the tides, and had their attention directed toward her. Flummoxed, she began to blurt whatever came out of her head first.
"B-b-b," Her voice shook as she absorbed reality and tried to bring herself down,"By the D-diamonds! Y-you okay? What happened!" She looked about, and tried to get a sense for where they were relative to the shore. Amidst the rapids, it was difficult to gain a handle on her dismay. Now that her rope had completely cooled, it was almost completely dark. Focus was proving to be impossible for her in this moment as she fumbled in an attempt to create a light.
The bone-jarring shock wave caused by the driving of their foot into the rocky riverbed radiated up their leg, slowly at first, evolving to a dull pain, the feeling in their anchoring leg flicking in and out.. much like a television overtaken by static.
"I'm fine!" They bellowed, fighting to be heard over the rushing water. They were lucky she couldn't see their face, a winced trailing behind each word, each movement- already they were making defiantly for shore, using their entire body as an anchor. "They..there was a tremor," they sputtered as muddy water continued to fill their mouth, "we fell..the..the rock came out from under us."
Though there was nothing they could have done, 7XB couldn't help but feel, at least in part, responsible for this. They WERE the security, after all.
As 7XB's words cut through the thunder of the torrent, the sapphire found herself becoming more lightheaded. Though this area was known for spurts of volcanic activity on occasion, a quake of all things had been the least of her worries. It was surreal to think-- if she had been more alert, could she have saved the situation? In her eyes, this was an unacceptable failure of her own-- her body felt weak as she tried to grapple with what had occurred. The quartz's voice was rife with the tell tale signs of distress, and she could feel the tension in their shoulders as they marched through the water. She couldn't help but to be baffled by their ability to stay upright, let alone by the sheer strength it took to move through this deluge. Already they had to go against her previous request, pushing to be free of the water's pull.
"I-- I'm sorry! I should've--" She stopped short, realizing that if there was time to talk there was time to help. She couldn't stop her trembling, she couldn't focus, but she grit her teeth. A line of bright plasma shot toward the riverbank, lighting up the area for a quick moment before it formed a hardened surface. She tried to concentrate on reinforcing the line she'd made before, so that it could be used for added stability. With the fading light, she caught movement in her periphery. An enormous shadow over the rocks dipped away from her line of sight before she could get a good look at it. Her concentration broke completely, "--did you see that?!"
Suddenly the frigid water lit up, a whip of light shooting across the blackness towards the shore, white hot for a brief instant before quickly solidifying into a solid bar, the light steadily fading away.
Wincing, 7XB moved to grip the cooling plasma, seeking a guard-rail as they fought the all-consuming current. The pain had lost them all of the feeling in their leg, and just as they parted their lips to finally say something in regards to it, Padparadscha's words pointed them towards the menacing shadow on the rocks, their already tense form seeming to hardening like steel, lurching to a stop as their sharp eyes narrowed.
Though unable to truly decipher the unknown beast, the cold feeling in the pit of their stomach reminded them of past, similar experiences, "Shhh.." they muttered, more to themselves, as they began to lurched forward once again, knowing full well that testing the beast's bravery was dangerous- though there was still the chance it was only an animal.
From the clear quartz's reaction, Padparadscha supposed, and regretted, that it hadn't been her imagination. Her eyes darted along the ledge of rocks above, but she couldn't make anything out. The chaos of the passing moments had already been mind numbing for the sapphire, but now she didn't know what to expect. Did organics even come in a size like that? If so, could it be a threat to them? There was no telling, but she kept scanning for it.
If it had eyes, it had most certainly seen her use her luminous ability. The two of them were sitting ducks at this point, and she didn't know what else she could do for 7XB anymore without continuing to light up their position. What luck, She thought bitterly-- it was hard to be optimistic, and she found herself being overcome by irritation. It seemed as if failure had haunted her for the passing moons of late, and she wondered for a moment if the board had been right to give her this assignment. Nonetheless, they were here.
As they came nearer to the shore, Padpara turned to look up river, and spotted some movement, a shape that slunk along the sandy riverbank. Instinctively she shrank back, trying to minimize herself, though in more lucid thought, she wasn't sure what good it would do her. Unsure if 7XB could spot it from their vantage point, she gave a timid point in its direction. She followed it carefully, and her eyes widened when the lumbering shape slipped silently into the rush of the river. Panic surged, she wracked her brain for a way to get out of the water more quickly.
Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, 7XB also noticed the movement out of the corner of their eyes, what little moonlight that trickled in through the vines above giving away the shadowy beast as it approached them, it's movements against the current both giving it away and, thankfully, causing it to work a little harder to reach them- not to mention giving them a few extra seconds to respond.
Luckily for the both of them the quartz was much calmer under pressure, even now, though they feigned ignorance at first. Their plan to deal with the creature, though, had to take a back seat to the safety of them gem clinging to them. That much 7XB hasn't lost sight of. When they felt her shift, trying to make herself small and unseen, was good enough for this situation, especially with the predator so close.
Turning suddenly, they severed a length of Padparadscha's rock-hard plasma, wielding it as a makeshift cudgel, and with surprising speed to boot. Having judged the distance, the monster would catch a strike across the muzzle, snout or.. whatever it had.
As the quartz snapped off their weapon, the sapphire braced herself. Though she didn't have a clear view, she knew that whatever that thing was, it would be quick. In seconds, the soldier had cracked the creature's face through the water. She jumped, but held on tight. Her eyes were still wide from panic, but she couldn't help but to give a small, nervous grin as it seemed to retreat. The shadow drifted out, toward the other side of the river away from them. However, it had been near enough that she could appreciate the size of their assailant-- the long, tapered form seemed to span quite a ways in both directions, yet it was shallow enough to keep itself submerged. Before she could summon the boldness to do something, she again lost sight of its shape beneath the murk.
There was a beat of relative calm, silence but for the movement of the water. The fact that the attacker was still shrouded under the water made her queasy. Her eyes scanned the surface, hoping to catch sight of it. Would it retaliate, or would it leave them be? It was hard to say, especially since she didn't know what it was. She thought back to 7XB's earlier comment-- it would be better to not know. Was this what they had in mind when they said it?
Much like Padparadscha, the Quartz had only seen the corruption long enough to appreciate it's size, and as they did, only one thing was running through their mind. It was smaller than the last one; That much, at least, they could tell.
7XB was almost relieved. Almost.
Wide eyes followed the scurrying creature back into the murky depths, their slow, lumbering steps inching them backwards, steadily closer to the shore. This served a twofold purpose, allowing them to protect their Sapphire charge and keep an eye on their guest. "Shes coming back.." they lamented quietly, twirling their now-bent club absently for a moment. Then, they brought it down on the surface of the water, sending a shock wave out, hopefully. At this point they were reaching, trying to trick the creature and figure out the best way to deal with it.
