Ships and gems came and went as the sun's yellow light glared across the iridescent surface of the moon. Padparadscha's ship descended into the bustling docks, landing in the space that had been reserved for it. She tapped her fingers impatiently as the pressure locks disengaged, and as soon as the door retracted she slipped through and glided across the station. Her face was in her dossier as she triple checked her most recent evidence for a case that she would soon have to sit in on.
Padparadscha hurried down the halls toward her quarter, until something flickered in the corner of her eye. She paused, and looked out of the long, clear window that lined the hall. It gave her a perfect view of the Earth, an azure orb emerging from the darkness of space around it. Her eyes glimmered as she gazed on Pink Diamond's planet. Soon...it will be the perfect colony, she thought as she smiled to herself, forgetting the busy movement of gems around her.
7XB, a rather large and burly quartz soldier, soon rounded the corner of that same hallway currently occupied by the regal Padparadscha gem, a short train of rather diminutive Rubies trailing behind them in a brisk march, their stubby legs struggling to keep pace. The Clear Quartz was, as foretold by their name, rather fair in complexion, a wild mane of bone-bleached planted upon their head flopping about as they stormed across the corridor.
Then, suddenly, the came to a stop, immediate as a Quartz could be with the sheer momentum their movement created, at the sight of the aristocrat gem before them. The rubies too were, fortunately, stop from bumping into their commanders legs. Or each other.
They crossed their massive arms across their chest respectfully, clearing their throat as to alert their rubies who joined them in their Diamond salute. "Your clarity." Their voice came low and quiet, a chilly sort of rumble. This was a Sapphire, a higher caste gem deserving the upmost respect.
Padparadscha ruminated on the planet before her, thinking of all the possibilities that it would present once its wilderness was tamed. Her trance was broken as she heard the Clear Quartz speak. It had been ages since she had seen a Quartz of such stature and respect, though perhaps she just hadn't given notice to any until now. They were a decorated soldier-- their honors, their entourage, and the air of command around them made it clear. She turned to face them, and smiled.
"Please, be at ease," Padpara said to the Quartz, returning a Diamond salute. She looked back toward Earth,"Tell me, what brings an honorable gem like yourself to Pink Diamond's headquarters? I imagine you must be at Yellow Diamond's personal behest,"
7XB gave a quick, Curt nod of their head, the floppy mop of hair upon their head bouncing about as they lowered their arms.Their rubies , however, maintained their own salute a moment longer until their Quartz commander brought their arms to cross behind their back.
"You honor me, your clarity," they insisted in the modesty expected of them, though there was the slightest hint of blue upon their cheeks: 7XB was did always enjoy being lauded with praise, though it was out of place to say so, as it were. "But yes, you are correct. As..you always are, I am sure." They cleared their throat again, muting the sound with a club-like fist, "I have been sent by her lumenous majesty, Yellow Diamond to serve Pink Diamond, as best I am able, until recalled."
Padparadscha was intent as the Quartz spoke, knowing that this information could be useful to her in the future. She took notice of the discipline of their subordinates-- rubies could be a handful, but given the right leader, the little gems could live up to their potential.
When the soldier finished speaking, Padpara beamed and clasped her hands together, "Excellent! It's good to know we have such capable gems on this effort. The work of our lustrous Diamonds is never finished, but once this colony comes together, it will be such an occasion! Pink Diamond's first colony!"
Padpara paused for a moment after she realized she was gushing, and gave a smirk, "Oh look at me, my excitement is getting the better of me. You must be on important business. Are you headed to Earth?"
Though they would be hard pressed to admit it, 7XB was proud of their Rubies, and how far they had come. What's more, it was a relief to the quartz that they chose now to remember all the disepline that 7XB had been trying to instill in them since day one.
Their expression was wide and absorbant as the Padparadscha Sapphire began to speak. "Yes, it certainly will be an exciting prospect, my lady. I, we, are of course honored to take part in such an effort." Always on their P's and Q's, weren't they? But it truly never bothered them, the Quartz was quite happy with their place. Truly, they would do all they could to serve Pink Diamond and, by extension, their own divine, merciful Diamond.
"Ah, not to Earth quite yet, your grace," they corrected, "I am just taking my charges here to run combat drills." They couldn't be around all time to lead them, and ascapable as they were, it never hurt to err on the side of caution. Even so, they had already seen much more 'action' on the colony than they would have ever expected.
Padparadscha considered what the Quartz had said up to this point. The gem certainly had a good sense for propriety, something she appreciated after years of being away from homeworld, and it was refreshing to have a conversation without having to doubt the other party's motives or probe for evidence to use in a trial. She considered the possibility that she could be testing the Quartz's nerves, yet they remained cordial and genuine.
At the risk of imposing even more than she had, she found herself interested in seeing this Clear Quartz's skills first hand. This gem held her curiosity, she would have to keep her eye on them. A test would keep her impression. She decided that the pressure was on.
"Ah, the routine that keeps us polished. You know, it's been some time since I've witnessed true Yellow Court technique, and I have some time before my next appointment. Would you consider having a spectator this time around?" Padparadscha planned to do more than spectate, though she still weighed on which approach she would take.
The Clear Quartz blinked, their usual mask of impassive sternness replaced by a look of genuine surprise. "You? Oh, well, my stars." Again there came that bluish tint, but was it born of pleasure of embarrassment? They found themselves worried now, if only slightly, that the rubies would tarnish their reputation somehow.
Hopefully they knew better.
Either way, 7XB's pulled a rather reserved smile, nodding vigiousously as their Corridiums resumed their salute. "Truly, you humble us, your clarity..but we would relish the honor of your presence." They cast a glance sideways, dismissively taking notice of the planet. Hm. They doubted a sapphire so well cut would see anything of interest in their training, but they would, of course, consent to entertain her, and hopefully still make an impact.
She returned a smile to the Clear Quartz, and gave a sweep of her eyes to the rubies lined up behind the soldier. Padpara caught their nervous ticks, but knew it had more to do with the unusual nature of this sudden proposal than anything. It was charming, she thought, for them to show such excitement at the prospect. It wouldn't be anything like being out on the field, but it would be a thrill to see them at work in a controlled environment.
"Lovely, I'm looking forward to seeing what your team can do," Padpara motioned toward the gem on her throat, "Oh, commander, before you lead the way, I would like to know what to properly call you! I'm partial to true names myself--Padparadscha facet 10C8A cut 8QE, my station is just down the corridor past the Court."
The quartz froze for a moment as the noble sapphire gem made motions to her own gem. 7XB was beyond mortified, the smile upon their face sliding away as their normal mask of indifference retook it's usual place. "My apologies, your Clarity," how could they have forgotten to introduce themselves? "I am Clear Quartz, Facet 1R7J, Cut 7XB." Arms crossed again over their chest, though only momentarily, as was customary in such a formal introduction, belayed as it had been, before they came to clasp again behind their back. Granite eyes fell upon Padparadscha, taking a moment to observe her more closely, out of simple curiousity. "I speak for us all when I say how honored we are to speak with you." Endless formalities were the true language of Homeworld, were they not?
"With your permission, I should like to lead the way?"
"It's an honor to be allowed such a chance," She answered, and maintained her own pleasant expression. After all, she had a sincere enthusiasm for the fact that she would get to use this time between her appointments more productively. Before she lamented that this scheduling hiccup would leave her bored.
There were many gems of many kinds who went to and from the Moonbase Headquarters, but there were some who stood out. Padpara suspected that this would be a productive endeavor indeed-- she was looking to update her retinue with strong, experienced gems for her upcoming away-missions. Going to Earth alone was always a recipe for disaster.
She almost never went to the arena herself, and would feel out of place in the helm of this party. Padpara gestured toward it, "Please, feel free to lead, commander Clear Quartz 7XB,"
Well, this was certainly a pleasant surprise, wasn't it? What 7XB had anticipated as another typical day on base had turned into the entertainment of nobility! The fact that a Padparadscha Sapphire of all gems would take interest in something like combat training was extraordinary, so of course the Quartz commander did not mind at all. If anything, they seemed to have a bit more 'pop' in their step as they made to lead the way, respectfully stepping past the orange gem, the Rubies doing the very same, trailing after 7XB with a quiet series of 'hup-hups'.
The arena, thankfully, was not far, leaving little room for 7XB , a straight-forward soldier,to blunder with any ettiquiette; They had very nearly reached it already when they first met the other gem. As the massive blast doors were already locked in the open position, 7XB led their small and now much more prestigious entourage through the wide maw, and into the Arena.
With the huge gate opened, Padparadscha filed in with the rest of the group. She glanced around the wide, open room-- the moon-gravel pit, the weapon racks just outside of the barracks, and the rows of modular seating arranged on the far side of the arena. It had been ages, she began to think she should start coming here more often to practice. She glided over to the seats, and chose a spot in the middle for a good view of the pit. With a flick of her wrist she brought out her slate, to give the time one last check before leaving a note on her schedule. She put it away, then looked up.
"Feel free to begin whenever you're prepared!" She called, excited to see where they would go from here.
As the group separated, 7XB led the Rubies to the very center of the gravel pit; Their parts well rehearsed by this point, the little red gems formed a rank and file line facing the stands, and more importantly their commander. Reversely, 7XB stood with their back to the stands and, by extension, the Padparadscha, arms crossed behind their back yet again as they allowed themselves to slip into the familiar routine.
"Rubies," they began crisply, voice bouncing favorably throughout the fairly vacant arena, " today we are going to discuss squad tactics and their importance in a successful operation." They had, of course, had discussions like this before, but it was truly a multi-faceted topic and was well meaning and loyal as Rubies were they..well..they were dullards. It took a great deal of effort to instill something in their mind to any great effect. "Now," they turned on their heels, leftward, beginning to pace along the fairly trim line of gems, "who can tell me the most important tool you have at your disposal? The..hm..most valuable asset on a mission.
Silence. As expected.
Suddenly the stopped before the leftmost gem, steely eyes tracking downward. "2FG? Thoughts?"
The sapphire remained silent. She leaned forward, listening and watching close. It was a habit of hers to watch every twitch of a given gem as it spoke, to assess the intentions laying beneath the surface. Her eyes were fixed on the ruby as she stumbled. Fusion was useful to a team of rubies, but Padpara wondered if that was the core of 7XB's message to them. The ruby was unsure, if not frightened-- to guess shape shifting of all things seemed to suggest she was floundering under pressure.
What was a gem's most powerful asset on the field? For herself, it was wit, ingenuity-- a small sapphire had to be quick thinking in a universe of burly gems and alien enemies-- but every gem had their own approach. Especially when working in a team, a gem had to know the most effective approach to survive. 7XB's answer to this ruby would shed light on not only the commander's own philosophy in the field, but their personal leanings in duty.
